Full disclosure: I am A Canucks fan. I have lived and died twice - in 1994 (went to a home game I could not afford in every round) and 2011. Winning a Cup. Is. Hard. If I had to say one thing about what I have learned from getting "that" close - you cannot do f*ck all without consistent, CONSISTENT, very high quality goaltending. The Leafs have not had an elite goalie for.... decades...? Dump one (at least) of your core 4, and buy an elite goalie, and get him an elite goalie coach to keep him sharp and playing with good habits. Next? You cannot win if you can't bring the puck out from your own end, and if you can't effectively protect in your own end under offensive duress. Leafs need TWO MORE great defensemen. Yes, Tanev would be a great signing (I am still sick that he left Van for Calgary...). The Leafs need to look completely different, I guess is what I am saying? This Presser is depressing for anyone who is a Leafs fan?
@@floyd2222 Tanev this year is a solid defensive top-4, who is injury prone, don't over-sell Tanev.
I'm also a Canucks Fan and hated to see Tanev go, but when Benning signs a 12mil 4th line to overpaid contracts and thinks that OEL fixes that, you have to cut salary somewhere. Tanev was an EXCELLENT pair for Hughes, but Hronek is filling that gap excellently, and is much younger than Tanev. If Alvin/Rutherford can keep enough of the group together this team will continue to be effective.

Keefe was getting line matched against their 4th line with home ice advantage. He didn't adjust special teams and went 1/24 on the power play and a 50% penalty kill. He also kept choosing to put Samsonov back in net when Woll has been the better option for over a year.

If Pelley thinks he’s worth keeping, than I trust his judgment. He will make the right moves and make this team competitive when it matters. He won’t be afraid to get rid of 34 in a couple of years if he doesn’t push the team forward. Ruthlessness and not playing favourites is what gets teams to the top.

The reason they ask players to do that is because of the salary cap. Otherwise it wouldn't be an issue in Toronto. There's no salary cap for management.

It's interesting that Shanahan acknowledges that the accountability lies with him, but there's no consequences that came with that accountability. It's just an empty statement. Keefe was the scapegoat, and there's no other accountability throughout the organization.

Pelley should have made a bigger statement of "accountability" across MLSE by axing Shanahan. It was the Shanaplan that failed over and over and over and over and over. Giving Dubas the keys to the Leafs was his first and biggest mistake and he didn't correct it.

You think Keefe was a soft players coach? I'm not sure I would agree with that. He benched Willie Stiles and rode his ass hard since he took over. And Nylander became a better player under Keefe. Painting a coach with one brush is not fair.....different players need different approaches to get better. All good coaches know that.

This reminds me of the Bruce Boudreau situation. Sheldon was never given a roster that could make a deep playoff run. All he got was a team with four forwards who take up nearly 50% of the cap, a mediocre Dcore that doesn’t even have a solid number 1 Dman, and questionable goaltending. This team needs to move on from Marner and Tavares and use that money to build a team with depth and solid defence. There’s a reason why a successful NHL coach like Babcock couldn’t win with this team.

It's true he was hamstrung by the Core Four, but the Core was also hamstrung by him. Ever hear his pre game pep talks before a playoff game? They were cringe. I'm not surprised the opposing teams always came out with more fire in the belly.
@@kermitfrog593 Have you considered the fact that some guys act differently in front of a camera? Maybe Sheldon gave better speeches when there was no media present in the locker room. Keep in mind that that the Toronto media and core four fans would rip him apart had he given a fiery speech for being too “hard” on the guys. Berube is probably one of those guys that act the same whether they are being recorded or not.

(At least they weren't until he was fired, then he gave a great one at his cottage). When the Maple Leafs got Taveres it was all downhill.
Tavares is a 70pt player paid like a 100pt guy. He's prolly a 50pt player now, and his best quality is his leadership and lengthy experience as captain.

It seemed that everyone but me wanted Tavares. I didn't like his signing. Damn sure didn't want his annoyingly quiet ass as captain.
Too many of you with shortterm memories. Signing John was the best thing the Leafs had done in a very long time. Everybody knew the end of the contract wouldn't look great, but you forget the early years when his line was neck and neck with Bergeron for the best in the Nhl. There is one person to blame for this trainwreck, and that is why he got out of Dodge -- Dubas and his horrible contracts to unproven players.
The division that the Leafs play in is brutally difficult to qualify for and then succeed in come playoff time. If you don't win the top seed, you are guaranteed a divisional rival and probably another divisional rival before squaring off against someone in the other division. Two President's Cup winners in the previous two of three years, Rangers took it this season. The Tampa Bay Lightning won the conference three straight seasons and even in the pandemic season, the All Canadian Division, Canadiens went to the Finals as well. Last year's Panthers won the conference as well. Those are tremendous opponents to have to gain enough points off in the regular season and then defeat in two playoff series just to get to the conference finals. These leaders all need to do their homework and study how the Lightning did it and then again see how the Panthers from last year and present are doing it. For one thing, it starts with a coach who knows his tactics and also knows how to sort out the minds of the players when they get into slumps, sports psychology. It requires a good weight training team to beef up players to hold the blue line and also to bash through opponent blue lines come playoff time. Dump and skate in doesn't work with the Bruins, Panthers, and even the Lightning before last year's version. It also requires a good, reliable goal tender. The Lightning have one, Panthers have one, and Bruins have one. Even Price, for the Canadiens during that pandemic run was the reason the Canadiens went to the finals. At last, it requires generational talents to get very angry at losing to the point where it eats them alive all summer long to so that when the puck drops come Autumn, they are ready to inflict pain on opponents all year long until that Cup is won. I'm seeing lots of talent on the Leafs from the neutral zone and up but not seeing that maturity and hunger, that will to win it all no matter the cost. Yeah Nylander and Matthews had their issues but see how the Lightning won without an injured Stamkos for most of their Stanley Cup run a few years ago. Do these things, even the media pressure of Toronto won't be a thing and success will be had.
How many coaches and GM's has Shanahan been through ? Maybe they're not the problem
He’s been through four GM’s and will be on his fifth head coach when they find Keefe’s replacement. What’s more disgusting is that Vegas came into being in 2017 and in seven short years they’ve made the finals twice and won the Cup in 2023. Shanny and Pelley should think about that before making horses asses of themselves they did here.

"We are mostly going to 'run it back' for the last year both Shanny and Tavares have left on their contracts, and we'll see what we can do over the summer to free up some cap space, but don't expect any miracles from us, and just keep filling our building every night so we at least keep raking in the regular season dough, thanks."

As long as they fill the building and make a ton of money on merchandise, broadcast rights, and the brand, losing in the playoffs will not effectuate major organizational change or change to the culture. The Maple Leafs are several years away from winning the Stanley Cup. Just my opinion.

The thing is, Shanahan was on a team that won with one of the best 4th lines in history in Detroit, and then you look at the way the Leafs are built and you wouldn't think Shanahan was the President of this soft team with no heart!! Totally opposite of those Detroit winners! Shanahan has to be tougher and start actually doing his job for once no more core 4. It's time to bring in some big Canadian boys that want to win 🏆

In four weeks he has been more interested in watching the crowds at games then he has been in contemplating personnel decisions and the history of the last ten years under Shanahan.
