    A. Pick your category
Read 1. 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing (Chapter 2: The Law of Category)
    Read 2. Blue Ocean Strategy
    B. Don't obsess on scaling
Read 3. Small Giants by Bo Burlingham
    C. Scratch your itch, instead of an imaginary audience
    D. Determine how big should your business be to fuel the life you want to create
Read 4. Essay: 1000 True Fans
Read 5. Tools of Titans by Tim Ferris
    E. Think and plan thoroughly, differentiate and measure, before creating the business
; then stick to the plan by executing its objectives effectively and efficiently.
Read 6. The Effective Executive by Peter F. Drucker
Read 7. 80/20 Rule by RIchard Koch (the original one)
    F. Remind yourself why you built a business: Financial Freedom (to create the life you want)
    Read 8. Walden by Thoreau
Read 9. Vagabonding by Rolf Potts
    G. Hustling 24/7 in a very scatterbrained fashion is a form of laziness
Read 10. The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss

A short summary of the ideas from the video above:
    1. If you cannot be first in your category, setup a new category. The Blue Ocean strategy.
    2. Don't obsess about scaling. Focus on the product.
    3. Gain 1000 true fans. They will be the drivers of your growth.
    4. Measure your KPIs and train to deliver your message in a clear and concise way.
    5. 80/20 principle (works with your content, clients etc)
    6. Do many tests and look for the stuff that works. You are only starting, that's okay.
    7. In the middle of your journey find time to stop, evaluate what you have already achieved and correct your course direction.
    8. Hard (and smart) work is key.

Better create a category and own it.
    Then go to what exists
    2:25
    Don't obsesse on scaling.
    Don't work for the awards.
    Focus on a great work
    Read small giants.
    5:15
Create podcasting on something you are curious about
You can then convince others to be invested in it
    7:00
If you are taking inspiration from other podcasts understand what made it them.
Is it the host, the guests etc.
    Focus on what interests you.
You like that attract your tribe
    10:00
Focus on the critical things which are mostly uncomfortable and like that you can outpace others
    13:20
    Focus on starting
    Then focus on repetition.
    Focus on discipline then.
And then focus on repetition and decipline with a great video
    16:50
    תכוונו לנישה מסוימת ואל תתפזרו

When I started working remotely for a big corporate and started traveling I soon learned through experience about the principles talked about in Vagabonding, understanding at the end of our lives what are the things that really make us fun: experiences through adventure and discovery through the eyes of other people. I recommend that life for everyone. It's a valuable lesson in value.

Tim, your work ethic, hustle, and marketing skills are legendary. I remember seeing interviews and case studies about tactics you used to make your projects successful. Do you think entrepreneurs are somewhat cheated when the people they look up to preach, "follow your passion! take risks!" without sharing the secret sauce of their hyper growth tactics? You're easily one of the most generous, tactic-oriented guys just out there, just wondering your opinion.

"Indiscriminate action is reflective of too little thinking and planning, and that is lazy and that is one of the most destructive forms of laziness because it is socially reinforced and people will encourage you to do that. In other words they will say "just don't stand there do something." Well if you're constantly doing things that are not carefully thought through you will end up doing the opposite the 80/20 principle you will end up specializing in unimportant things." I have been searching for someone to say this very thing long time.

  • @bluedot125
    @bluedot125 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

All the points Tim makes here are great, however, there are times he almost has these Zen-like thoughts and one can be found here. Tim says, "Indiscriminate action is reflective of too little thinking & planning and that is lazy. It is the most destructive form of lazy because it is socially reinforced and people encourage you to do that. They will say "don't just sit there, do something." If you're constantly doing things that are not well thought through you'll end up specializing in unimportant things. You'll become an expert in doing trivial things well."
I have felt that way so many times working for others and had anxiety about not always looking busy. I'll be pinning this one to my wall. Thanks, Tim!

Tim, this morning I stumbled across your interview on Morning Brew. After, watched two of your videos, including the above. Your guidance regarding starting a business essentially is what I experienced starting my first service corporation back in the early 80s. As founder and CEO, I operated and built that business into a North American competitor over forty plus years, before retiring it six years back. During that time, I started and sold two other businesses. I enjoyed and could relate to your experience on many levels, only my experiences began back in the 70s, including the effects of psychedelics. I hope your audience listened closely, especially to when you say, if they don't have time to read, they probably should pass on starting a business. Thank You!

If you want to be successful at this-and I'm sure you do-then you'll need to differentiate yourself from the other 500-million self-improvement "gurus" out there that think starting a self-improvement business is an easy, fast and fun way to get rich. Hint: It's not. If you want to be successful, I recommend only posting TRULY cutting-edge content-the best-of-the-best, practical and unique content. Otherwise, you'll get lost in the ocean of unoriginal, wannabe self-improvement gurus out there, and never get noticed. It's going to take a lot of work. If you're serious about this and interested in going deeper, I recommend Cal Newport's book So Good They Can't Ignore You. That will give you a solid advantage over all the other fly-by-night self-improvement "gurus" out there.

in mind first than trying to convince someone to switch to a better product than

Thank you for this video. Right now I'm finding myself in this situation where I'm too busy not getting anything accomplished mainly because I've accepted roles based on friendships and it has already costed me several opportunities and a lot of money. Hopefully I can get these tasks off my shoulders by the end of this month and I can really focus on my PM classes and start consuming these books for q4 of this year.

I really enjoy these kind of laid-back videos where you talk about virtually anything. I'll definitely check those books out, although some I already knew about (the 80/20 principle and Vagabonding).
Thanks for sharing your philosophy with us.

    Hi Tim Ferris
I Love this video, you have mentioned the most important factors of creating a business. It helps me to come up with new ideas for a business. It includes marketing and to analyze the small things that make a business a five-star one. Has mentioned in the video, it is important to spend time and read more about the business that someone is trying to start. Your positivity inspires me to keep wanting to accomplish my dreams to make them come true.

Found this video only now, 3 years into my biz, but so glad to see you recommending Vagabonding as a "go to" to course correct.
I'll get to the copy I bought in Aug 2011 to spark that ray of light back into what I'm doing.
BTW, you're a great inspiration and one of my favourite speakers. Thank you for your work!
