  • Art21 proudly presents an artist segment, featuring Leonardo Drew, from the "Investigation" episode in the seventh season of the "Art in the Twenty-First Century" series.
"Investigation" premiered in October 2014 on PBS.
Leonardo Drew, whose art career began as a child in inner city Bridgeport, Connecticut, transforms new materials-through processes of decay, oxidization, and exposure to weather-in his sculptures. Never content with work that comes easily, Drew reaches daily beyond his comfort zone, charting a course of experimentation with his materials and processes and letting the work find its own way.

Very cool. I do think it’s kinda strange to not use naturally weathered/found materials but love the dedication to create and the pieces are all something I would enjoy. Would’ve been sick if he kept drawing too he seems to have talent and heart. His process is relatable though. Once you commit to something artistically it changes your thought patterns. I like the seven crying babies analogy

as a black artist its refreshing to see another black artist who doesn't drone on with the same spiel that you usually hear, America, race, police, government, white people, the black identity, slavery, africa..........

You must be young and somehow have heard every Black artist in the world talk about their work.
Everyone of us... Young person, Black artist can talk about anything we want to talk about that informs and reflects our artistic aesthetics, trajectories, messages and voices.
So your voice as an artist doesn't ever reflect the times we live in, that's you. Congratulations, you're one of few Black artists who's managed to create in spite of your Black realities.
      👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽
Trust and believe that Leonardo's artwork, processes and journey hold references to his Black/Afrikan-ness.
