  • South African artist William Kentridge is best known for his animated charcoal drawings but he also works in sculpture, print making, tapestry and stage design. He directs operas and creates multi-screen video installations that tour the globe.
Recently, he's combined his love of figurative art with dance, music and mime and he's created an extraordinary 500-meter freeze set within the heart of the ancient city of Rome. William Kentridge is frequently in the top rankings for international artists but, despite his global reputation, he's always remained anchored to his roots.

He is not South Africa's Picasso, he is South Africa's William Kentridge. This man can stand on his own. Picasso had his time.

I really fell in love with Kentridge's work when The Refusal of Time landed in the SF MOMA. I went back to it many many times, sometimes almost exclusively for the soundtrack.
And yes, the reference to Picasso in the title is idiotic, but it doesn't change the fact that Kentridge is his own kind of genius. Reminds me of when some music magazine put FKA Twigs on the cover and referred to her as the new Prince... REALLY?

Kentridge is not South Africa's Picasso. He is South Africa's Kentridge. In the spirit of your blithe comparison, Bloomberg, I offer my immature response: Boo-urns to comparing any artist to another. Laud individuals for their individuality. And that's just, like, my opinion, man. Thanks for your time.

Just the irony of claiming how outraged they were about "apartheid" yet using roman imagery for new paintings, Romans being the oppressors of that time but are glorified in present. Even though the British started apartheid regime with concentration camps it is still ongoing today.

John, so nobody can ever be compared to Picasso? Picasso is compared to previous great artists, each era will produce its Goyas, itsPicassos, its Louise Bourgeois. Kentridge is a great experimenter, a polymath. It is probably a silly title, Kentridge is Kentridge and has done things Picasso never did, partly because of advancing technology partly because of his huge intellectual breadth. This heroicising of individuals is problematic, each person is positioned in their time and place as well as their individuality.

Picasso????? Oh my god!!!! Picasso was considered a genius when he was 21 years old, did paintings and drawings like Raphael when he was 12 years old, and by 26 he discovered Cubism!!!! This Kemtridge is NOTHING compared to Picasso!!! PIcasso Re-invented Classical Figuration in 1917 and created the masterpiece of Guernica!!!! If Picasso was alive today, he wouldnt be nobody in the art scenery, because Picasso was Catholic and Spaniard!!!!

Fucking bullshit yet again from this PR company. Look, to even make a comparison with Picasso is just utter nonsense. The man is limited by his lack of skill. Picasso was multi- talented who invented new art for the world. This bloke is just one of thousands of average artists. What was Walt Disney then, the new Da Vinci! At leased Micky Mouse brought fun to the world.
