  • Hi everyone, welcome to our channel. In this video, we are going to show you the steps that you can follow to grow your very own baobab trees from seeds! Be sure to stick around for our top tips towards the end. We also have all this information packed into an eBook for our loyal viewers.
    To get started you will need:
    Baobab seed
    A few small containers
    Coarse sandpaper
    Potting soil
    River sand
    And Pots
    Baobab seed are notoriously slow and difficult to germinate. Therefore, we are going to treat the seed before we plant them.
    Using your sandpaper, file your seed until you create an almost transparent layer. Try and file the entire surface and do not be gentle in this step. These seed coats are extremely hard and by removing the outer layers, you can help the seed to take up water, which is necessary if a seedling is going to emerge. You may want to use some pliers to get a firm grip on your seed and to protect your fingers from nicks.
    Once you have filed your seed, place them in a container and pour boiling water over them. Leave them to soak for 24-48 hours. If you can, periodically refill the containers with hot water.
    While your seed are soaking, you can mix your soil. We are using an all-purpose potting soil mixed with river sand. As we mentioned earlier, baobabs grow in the sandy African soils and do not tolerate waterlogging. The river sand helps to promote drainage and therefore helps to prevent root rot. Our mix is made up of 1-part potting soil to 1-part river sand. You can also use a commercial succulent or cacti mix too.
    Fill your pots with the soil. The long taproot of baobab seedlings can be quite fragile and get damaged easily during transplantation. Therefore, we recommend using one medium sized pot per seed. This will provide enough area for roots to grow and establish before you need to transplant your seed.
    After the seed have soaked, the seed will have imbibed, or swollen up with water. You can see here the difference between a non-soaked seed, a seed that was sanded and soaked for 24 hours and a seed that has started to germinate. After soaking, the coats will have softened and maybe even started to peel off themselves. Try and remove this covering either with your fingernails or by giving your seed another filing with the sandpaper. Be careful in this step, some seeds may have started to germinate and any damage to the radicle, which will form the root, will kill your plants before they even get a chance to grow.
    After you have treated your seed, sow them into 1 cm deep holes. Lightly cover them with soil. Give them a good soaking with a fine irrigation and keep them in a warm area. Make sure your soil is kept moist, but not waterlogged.
    In a few weeks’ time, your seed will start to emerge, although this may occur quicker in warmer environments. Your seedlings will still require regular watering. With every irrigation, soak the soil well and only water again once the top couple of centimetres have dried out. When your seedlings have grown 2 true leaves, you can transplant them into a larger container filled with a sandy mix.

    The literal tree of life!
    PLANT ONE TREE AND FEED THOUSANDS OF YEARS OF GENERATIONS OF HUMANS AND ALL LIFE.
    Amazed by this trees givingness and it’s fruits nutrition, leaves medicinal properties, barks usefulness, ability to store water and provide shelter. Nourish the earth… it’s wild !!! I think we should grow as many of these as possible! All the oldest ones in the wild recently died.

    Gotta tell you, snails and slugs LOVE Baobab shoots, if you plant them, don’t rely on pellets, until they have at least 4 sets of leaves be very active in protecting them from snails and slugs, I use both pellets and mesh as well as a scattering of ash around the pot and active traps. Btw, shoots are tasty in a salad if you have a lot of seeds.

    Can you share what is your experience on how many days does it take for the radical to appear above the ground after treating the seed and planting into the ground just like in this video?

    • @AgricultureAcademy
      @AgricultureAcademy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends! We found if you notice a clear increase in seed size after soaking, radicle emergence can happen just days later. So try soak until you notice your seed has imbibed the water.

    I have a 3 year old baobab in south Florida USA the last two years the leaves have came out in march. It’s now may and in the 90’s everyday and my leaves are just poking out I’m worried

      Oh no, hopefully its alright! If the leaves are starting to grow hopefully thats a good sign? The seedlings in this video are entering their first dormancy period now and its very unnerving to see them so bare, but hopefully come spring time they will bounce back

    How often do I water them? and is it OK for the soil on the top to be dry but an inch under is still moist?

    • @AgricultureAcademy
      @AgricultureAcademy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there, if the baobabs are young and in pots just make sure they do not sit in waterlogged soil for extended periods of time, so it seems like you have got a good method of letting the top soil dry out. Also, make sure the baobabs are kept bone dry when they are dormant in the winter.

    I'm going to plant a lot of trees in my backyard because it's so big. 30 baobab trees might be in the plans. They are large and quite gorgeous. I want to plant some trees that cast shadows. So, I have two inquiries: first, does this tree lose its leaves each year, and second, if so, for how long? Furthermore, wouldn't my property appear unattractive if all the trees lost their leaves? Since it would resemble a savanna or scrubland in my thoughts... 😅

    • @AgricultureAcademy
      @AgricultureAcademy  ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, that’s awesome to have a backyard large enough for that many ‘babs!
      Yes they do lose their leaves, and they are quite late to get them back in the spring. For example, these seedlings are still leafless and almost all other trees have their spring leaves back.
      And it would depend if you like the look of bare baobabs and if they match the rest of your property

      that's not the best idea tbh. they take a lot of space especially when fully grown, the flowers attracts many fruit bats that will feed on a lot of your crops and poop everywhere great for the plants not so much for your health

    hi any tips for baobabs in dormancy? I have let mine dry out for winter and it is a bit scary with no leaves but i understand this is normal. also any tips for spring when i begin to water again? thanks!

    • @AgricultureAcademy
      @AgricultureAcademy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, they are usually quite slow to emerge from dormancy. These seedlings are a couple of years old now and still going strong, they now get a once a week watering

    Hi, I'm interested to grow this tree in Indonesia. Specifically in around Jakrta, which has high temperature (coldest: 20°C to 38°C), high rainfall (can be 1800 inch anually) and high humidity (80%++ quite common). Do you think Baobab can be grown?

    • @AgricultureAcademy
      @AgricultureAcademy  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmm, the high rainfall might be a problem.

    • @benedictjohannes
      @benedictjohannes 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was always under the impression that too little rainfall is problematic for any plant, but too much rainfall is okay. Can you elaborate why too much rainfall is a problem in growing the tree?

    the filing process is really unnecessary I planted a few baobab trees that where cooked mind you, and they ended up germinating alright and it didn't take long for them to do so. he might not have an ideal climate for them to sprout so it took a while for the conditions to be perfect for them to germinate
