  • El Hadji Salifou Ouédraogo has nurtured thousands of baobab trees from tiny seeds to expansive forests for the past 47 years. The trees in turn help his family, his village and the Earth.
Filmmaker Michel K Zongo’s uplifting film, The Man Who Plants Baobabs, meets this charismatic old man with a youthful spirit and a lifelong commitment to his trees, which are both a lifeline and a legacy for his community.
Michel K Zongo is a cinematographer and director based in Burkina Faso. He has made three feature-length documentaries that have screened internationally and won several awards. He is also the artistic director of the Koudougou Doc Festival and has been an Academy (‘Oscars’) member since 2020.

Baobabs require little water when mature & its seasonal fruits are exported to the US where it is used to make pharmaceutical products & medicines. A much better investment than seasonal crops which many Africans plant for their own survival. Planting trees than can grow for a 1000 years is the way to go

And this is exactly why the next EarthShot awards should be held in Africa, a continent which is actively trying to combat climate change, rather than the Americas - a continent which is doing the exact opposite.

Africa will and always will be rich, it's the people who lost this sight and sense of its value so this Man is one of the rare gems. I for one cultivates and invests on my country with my earning in foreign land and a few years now will go home and enjoy the fruits of my labor in my country.
