    This time I look at a sick Atari 800XL which has two faults! The colour problem is DIFFERENT to the previous repair I did on an 800.

    Great video. I've liked how you've fixed those broken cables.

    Y1 and Y2 Xtals can be sourced / harvested from an Atari Jnr which are readily available. I had to rebuild the Pal colour circuit into a NTSC machine and used an old Jnr board. The schematics for the boards are on Atariage. As always enjoyable Sir. I am currently in battle with an Early Adelaide a3010 which now needs nearly all keyboard traces repairing. Someone really needs to do a pin to point map lol, your Archie videos and struggles were highly informative. Many Thanks Geisty.

    I had one 800XL that had messed up color flicker issues too and it ended up being a dirty pot. After cleaning and adjusting it that solved it

    Atari home computers are very underrated and in the shadow of Commodore that was the king back in the day. Not to mention the many (house/rave) tracks that where made with Cubase running on a Atari ST.

    A very interesting video. Now the best module is still missing, an AVGCART (FPGA) from tmp 😉👍

    Super rare to find a fully socketed 800XL, all 600xls were socketed

      And 600s we’re much more compact with fewer parts.

    The 2n3904 and 2n3906, looking at they spec sheets, have quite a wide tollerance when it comes to what kind of gain you can expect from them. There are no gain "classes" specified. They just say "hFE: 100-300", which is not entirely useful. So whenever you deal with them, you have to measure what actual gain you got :p That was enjoyable seeing you fix the Atari :D Thank you!

    • @GadgetUK164

      The point here though is the 2 from the Amiga had identical gain, and the pack of 10 or 20 "replacements" whilst having a totally different gain, they all were the same as each other - and NOT suitable for this Atari. I am sure they were just an equivalent lablled as 2N3906...

    I designed and built a modern mechanical keyboard replacement for my 600XL using the original keycaps. The membrane was dodgy, my solution was overkill 😁

    Coincidentally I was watching a recent video from Arctic Retro fixing an 800XL just before watching this one. He had the same issue as you with the Super Salt cart, but it turns out that there is a later rom that can handle XLs (and presumably XEs) properly.
    The keyboard mechanism was totally different to yours though (membrane based).

    Holding start tried to boot from tape. Option disables basic, if there is not cart or disk drive it goes into the self test

  • @Mclaneinc
    @Mclaneinc ปีที่แล้ว +2

    LOL, you know so many machines Chris, but you need to delve deeper in to the Atari range. Hold Option disables basic which on the XL also takes you to self test mode, had there been a disk drive connected it would have booted without BAISC. The Start button when held at boot allows for the tape to be loaded via the SIO (Serial input output, aka the first version of a USB (same guy)). Just going to watch the rest of the vide now :)

      I just managed to forget which button does what lol! I have a printed piece of paper with notes on this sytem - I often forget how to use the SIO2SD too lol!!!

    Very inventive flex cable fix. Such a shame it's difficult or impossible to source a direct replacement for the awful flex cables. Unfortunately I've taken to removing the entire thing and replacing it with ribbon cable with a 24-way female Dupont connector at the end (and a 24-way male header on the motherboard), but all that crimping and soldering takes time and it's fiddly as Hell.

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, certainly a lazy fix I did, and on reflection I should have used multi strand wire! I am sure it will be OK, but ultimately if someone goes in and out a number of times, a connection I fixed (or another) is sure to break...

      @@GadgetUK164 Have you seen Paul of Rossmann Repair grafting new flex cables onto the existing ones on a Macbook by soldering the individual tracks? It reminded me of that!

    I've been looking for an Atari 800 to work on. If they work they go for $250 to $300. Too rich for me in this economy.

    You recommend removing the RF shield if you're using an 800XL for prolonged gaming?

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I think I would run it without the RF shield if using it regularly!

  • @tahustvedt
    @tahustvedt ปีที่แล้ว +1

    With my 800XL I have to wait several seconds after turning off before I turn on again ot it won't clear the memory. Is that normal for these?

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's normal for the Atari 8 bits! My 65XE is the same ;)

    optical photon momentum cantilever gate transistors (optical flex photon blocker gate) would be best at sub-nanometer scale and ultra high frequencies, like 1000THz (same as light photon frequency, E=hf)
