Comparing the Tecsun PL-310ET and Sangean DT-800 on AM/mediumwave

  • In this video, I demonstrated the difference in noise floors of the Tecsun PL-310ET and new Sangean DT-800. This video was made at a site far away from RFI of any sort other than the iPhone that shot the video (which had no discernible impact on either radio).
    The DT-800, like the ATS-405, both suffer from higher than average noise on the AM band. A shame because this will put off AM/MW DXers.
    For the casual AM broadcast listener, though, the DT-800 is not a bad pick. The AM noise floor is about the only con I note on this otherwise excellent little receiver. See my full review on the SWLing Post.

    Hi Tom,
    Sounds like poor shielding from the display. Pity otherwise might be a good little radio.
    Great video.
    Cheers...... Phil vk2gjf

    Thanks for the review! but how do you like your Tecsun pl- 310et when you put it alongside other DSP Tecsuns, say for example 380 or 360 or 606?! Thanks again for your time, 73!

      I have a slight preference for the PL-310ET over the other DSP models you mention (save the PL-606 which I've never done a direct comparison).

      SANGEAN DT-800C and TECSUN PL-310 ET has FM expanded band (64 - 108 MHz)

    That background noise on the DT-800 is really bad. I don't think my DT-200VX or DT-400W have any background noise like this. Is it possible you got a defective DT-800 sample?

    Whether 310et will pick up the am station which is 500 km far?

    What is the range (in km) of recieving capacity of AM and FM station of 310et? I am thinking of buying it.

      That is a difficult question to ask. It depends on the topography around you, the noise level (on MW), the station's antenna system (and if it's directional) and their output power. With that said, 500 km is simply too far for any sort of reliable FM reception. 150 km is difficult unless the station happens to be powerful and have a very tall antenna. On MW, at night, it's easy to DX stations 500km away, but not always reliably unless they're directional and high power.

    FYI the DT-800 requires the headphone wire as the antenna. The manual says it.

    • @ThomasK4SWL
      @ThomasK4SWL  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's correct for FM reception. AM reception, which is being tested in this video, relies on an internal ferrite bar which is why the headphones aren't connected.

      For fm it’s required; am however has an internal ferrite antenna.
