    the original title “Life is Like a Box of Chicken” is crazy seeing how the story told in “Duckworth” is about how unpredictable life is and how Kendrick’s dad working at a KFC and thinking quick basically saved his life and protected his son’s future.

    That's why the beat switch was so seamless. I've listened to many songs where the beat switches without seamless transition, it's like a new song was playing, i.e. Travis Scott's "STARGAZING." Then some songs I've listened to, oversaturate the song with beats that are not cohesive, i.e. Beyoncè's "House."
    What made me enjoy that beat for DUCKWORTH was the fact 9th kept the same kick and bass and all three were soul based samples.

    That hiatus kaiyote section was my favorite. I discovered them from a friend after hearing this song and it took a while for me to catch the sample from listing to duckworth and I was blown away. Love that entire track.

  • @davidhollenbeck1674
    @davidhollenbeck1674 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    the thing about these rejected beats stories is, its way more rejected beats than u would think really
    i got the chance to work with a producer who has a few notable young thug placements and he told me about this session he had with thug where he fulled up with legit 50 brand new beats after working all month to make a pack. and they just sat for a half hour and flipped through the folder. if thug didnt say anything by the time the first drum loop ended, it was a miss. time to skip to the next beat
    the way the story goes. homie flipped through the whole pack and was getting hella nervous. thug didnt pick anything until the legit *last* beat in the folder
    now if any of those other beats get a placement they can say they're "rejected thug beats" haha

    Duckworth is fucking god tier. Def among the top 20 tracks in hip-hop. The songwriting is fucking incredible. Reminds me of Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst on good kid m.A.A.d city. Kendrick’s longer narrative tracks are p much always 10/10.

    To anybody wondering, the album was originally going to be called "What Happens on Earth Stays on Earth" so all of the tracks had different names, with DUCKWORTH. being called "Life is Like a Box of Chicken" before he decided to change it DAMN. with all the tracks being a single word

    “Life is like a box of chicken” is such an incredible title in itself when you look at the meaning of Duckworth. In the song Kendrick explains the randomness of life and how him being in his position is due to his dad charming top dawg while he was robbing the kfc his dad worked at. Thus this lucky charm Kendrick’s dad had saved his and Kendrick’s life as without his dad Kendrick’s life would of been turned around (backwards), hence all the reverse sounds used and how the album changes meaning when played in reverse. The “life is like a box of chicken” refers to the famous movie line from Forest Gump where he says something like “life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get”. The quote explaining how life is full of randomness and surprise, with Kendrick spinning the metaphor about the chocolate box to fit into the narrative told with the kfc story. Genuinely incredible 😂.

    Crazier thing is one year prior, Kendrick had a feature on Big Pooh's album. If Little Brother were still steadily making music together at that time, he could have already had the chance to rap on a 9th Wonder beat way before that tweet.
