    I have an uncle that was a born gearhead. His first truck had a broken RPM gauge and the previous owner removed the clutch pedal. So he had to learn to shift based on noise and just general feeling. He got so good over all his years that he was able to shift, without a clutch pedal, as if the transmission was a part of him. He drove long haul, dragsters, farm equipment, you name it, and never touched a clutch pedal in his life.
    Aside from the practical use, it's just very impressive to watch.

    When I was a kid, I knew that conceptually you should be able to shift clutchless. I had a 62 vw bug that I learned how to drive when I was around 14 driving in my grandparents huge property. First thing I started to teach myself was how to smoothly heel toe down shift, and then how to shift up and down without a clutch. It came in handy when I had a clutch cable break, and years later, a hydraulic cylinder in a different car fail.

    what he is doing is sliding the gear lever out while at the same time letting the foot off the throttle so the gear lever can slide out smoothly without clutching in (idk why it only goes out smoothly like that i just know it works) and then he matches the revs while in neutral to the transmission speed which allows the gear lever to go back in without depressing the clutch. now doing this while left foot braking and on the limits of grip is like level 100 of mastering a manual transmission because you are literally adding a whole other aspect of operating the transmission by timing the throttle with the gear lever. this surpasses heel-toeing difficulty by a billion %. this guy knows.

    • @evanisneoxi8820
      @evanisneoxi8820 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      but however im not sure if doing this is the fastest way BECAUSE when you disengage the transmission and engine with a CLUTCH the engines RPMS drop faster allowing you to enter the next gear and back on the power band quicker. im not sure but I THINK this is because when the transmission is in neutral the engine also has to move the transmission meaning revving the engine or having the revs drop would be slower because the power of the engine has to move the transmission as well instead of them being disconnected from eachother. the only way i could see this being faster in any way would be the added benefit of cutting time between braking with your right foot and back on the throttle again however the thing im not sure about is which would be the fastest way around a track: left foot braking to cut time between each pedal or having the engines rpms drop quicker to allow u to get back into the next gear and power band.
      IN MY OWN OPINION this feels like its only purpose is for you to know that you have mastered everything a manual transmission can the let the driver do.

    Rally drivers generally use dog engagement gearboxes that require a momentary reduction of torque/release of throttle to be able to change gear. The shifts should all be done in a split second by lifting throttle and quickly and positively changing gear, not like this guy is doing which isn’t what the rally drivers do. I've used this technique in various situations in my 86 (and occasionally in my C5) for like 12 years. Its funny when people try to tell me how I'm going to destroy my transmission doing it. Ok, when? In 15 more years?
    Anyway, its useful in some situations but I don't upshift with it except when I'm being lazy in traffic. On dirt like this, its even more forgiving of mistakes.
    Edit: also comes in handy. The clutch hydraulic line went out on my C5 on the tail of the dragon a couple weeks ago, and I drove 4hrs home with no clutch. I even finished the run I was on and didn't get left behind...

    Correct me if im wrong, the most manual rally cars are driving a sequentiel gearbox with an ignition cut. They dont have synchros, so you just hammer the next gear in. But especially the downschifts with normal gearboxes are made with heel and toe, and the left foot on the clutch. If you just put the next lower gear in it will kill your synchros and clutch, perhaps the gear weels will break.
    Its no hate, i just dont want you to kill your gearbox an clutch. But if im wrong please correct me.

    this remind me of how Quick Shift kits work on motorcycles. On bikes with a kit you can avoid using the clutch unless your in first gear. The Kit cuts thr throttle when you hit the shifter so you can up and down shift without using the clutch. Orignally used in racing now Yamaha and other makes will sell you one on most bikes. Same thing here only your foot is a the quick shift kit. The only thing Yamaha changed is the pad material for this type of shifting which was not necessary but made it more smoother/reliable

    • @rickyGman11
      @rickyGman11 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't need a quick shift kit to clutchless shift on a motorcycle, it just makes it safer on the mechanical parts since it allows anyone no matter their skill level to do it. The general gist of clutchless shifting on a bike is pretty simple because of its dog box transmission. For upshifting you apply a reasonable amount of upward force on the shifter whilst accelerating, once you want to make the shift you briefly reduce power and the bike will shift before you even realize. Downshifting is similar enough but you have to be more careful

    For some reason I can't do it in my car for downshifts. The gears don't even cruch, it just won't go in. On the other hand, upshifts work like butter.

    Do you rev match once you're in neutral? I've wondered how people do this.

      Nice name Ben Dover, anyways there's this guy called conquer driving, he explains it in some of his videos, I think I saw it in a video called "every way to downshift"

    • @Judge_OnYouTube
      @Judge_OnYouTube ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Most 1960's onward transmissions have sychros that will do the heavy lifting for you when trying it out yourself. Yes, you need to rev match...well, you don't need to, but the box will last a lot longer than a few weeks if you do.

  • @lercoo2331
    @lercoo2331 ปีที่แล้ว

    it's quite simple but it will destroy the gearbox if done incorrectly. all the magic lies in gently shaking the gear and waiting for the engine speed to align with the gearbox speed then the gear will jump

    Rally at it's finest, lower horespower and speed, worse breaks, forceing more slideing, lower risk of high speed crashes.

    does this have any worse effects on the transmission compared to shifting with the clutch? i want to know if i can keep doing this on my daily driving too.

  • @ethanjohnson1231
    @ethanjohnson1231 ปีที่แล้ว

    If I'm understanding this correctly, you use Neutral in place of your clutch, unless your speed dips incredibly? Basically when you slow close to a stop use the clutch to prevent stalling? 🤔

  • @TomBudin
    @TomBudin ปีที่แล้ว +1

    best off to wait for the delay between shifts and not try to force the gear just find the points of crossover so you don't grind them or put extra force on the synchros

  • @AtoriKushina
    @AtoriKushina ปีที่แล้ว

    Although I feel like its 100% possible there should be some gear grind right?

  • @mcjibbo6100
    @mcjibbo6100 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You have to get the transmission rpm similar to the motor rpm then the gear should glide in if you know how to do it properly.

    • @liamholcroft7212
      @liamholcroft7212 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's only going to cause damage if you get it wrong. The clutch will allow the gearbox and engine speeds to match. If you manually match the speeds by using the accelerator, (rev matching) whilst in neutral then the clutch isn't needed.

  • @raitshots
    @raitshots ปีที่แล้ว

    Neutral is usually used. But in time he will pass 1_2_3 depending on the road environment. The main thing is not to break the gear
    Grinding easy 😁👍 bmw or other variant car
