Aww this brought back so many good memories of introducing our sensitive pup to tug. It was such a good confidence builder for her and value transfer was a huge part of that process.

I used value transfer to teach a drop to my dog. Now she drops almost anything on cue. Especially if it is something she found outside. Balls, tugs, and other toys are harder to get her to drop tho. With a second of waiting she will spit it out tho with what I call a “Malinois nibble”. Meaning she teeths it as it leaves her mouth. She is a gsd mal mix and so smart.

Great video. Can you maybe do a video on how to get a dog to be confident. I have a chihuahua, and she is smart. She can sit, learned that fast but working on other stuff. She is timid/shy, like she has no confidence. I guess overall how to build confidence in the dog.

Thank you for these series! What is the purpose of letting dog to rebit?

The rebite allows the dog to get a fuller bite using its back teeth as well as its front teeth.

Really enjoying this series, I've been trying to get my 10mo husky interested in tug of war, especially since I enjoy playing this with other dogs and happy to play quite rough too. Sadly the minute I put even the slightest amount of pressure on the toy, he releases the toy straight away... If there a way to get him into tug of war? If not ill just keep going with his flirt pole. 🤣

I would like to hear Nate’s response to this question too. One thing I do is have multiple sizes of pull toys, I watch which one my puppy is most interactive with and I select this one to work with first . Since I have three dogs there is always another pull toy to use. I find a few tug objects she likes. Then seject 2 to work with., I also think getting my puppy to enjoy the reward part of the tug game helps as winning the tug game builds their confidence & fun, I play it without releasing it entirely. My pup loises interest if she isn’t winning at least most of the time. I don’t let go while she is winning either that’s the fun of tug . My puppy loves to win, she wants me to try to grab it so she can show me how good at the game she is, it just is increasing her interest. Nate I don’t face this issue but I would like to hear the answer if I ever do. ?? Good question !

Great lesson but can you please explain the comment “dog should know that it’s good to pull against a harness” ?

I think that was meant as a low form of training for later when I think they're going to teach these dogs that classic "catching a perp" move and holding one while the perp might be trying to pull the dog away from them or hit them.

It would be nice if you didn’t use a high drive eager to please ocd malinois. I’ve done all this play style training with our standard poodle and I know he understands the command but now he thinks it’s fun to steal all our backyard LED light stakes and doesn’t listen to drop it at all. It would be nice to see how you correct a dog that clearly is more mischevious than a malinois .(who is constantly focused on the handler.)

wow this man shouldn't train dogs. never play tug like that with a dog because it will have aggressive tendencies. unless its for that's propose. also a head collar with a dog that big gives you more control. trying to get a full bit in a dog is dangers. this is shocking. he is not helping anyone. a dog trained like that is a killer without a top dog trainer. but any yobbo can watch this.
