  • Fisk University was founded in Nashville, Tenn. in 1866. As an institution for African-American students, their first years of inception were pivotal. In 1871, while facing serious financial concerns, the school’s treasurer and music teacher decided to create a tour with a choir known as the Fisk Jubilee Singers.
Bringing the sacred artistry of spirituals to the world around them, the Jubilee Singers leaned on the love, dignity, and passion the songs brought their enslaved ancestors. The tour was well-received, especially by white patrons who had only seen black people on stage in minstrel shows.
Hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr. - with additional commentary from Farrah Griffin of Columbia University, and Fisk University students Victoria Sanders and Dwayne Mitchell - we celebrate Fisk University and the award-winning Jubilee Singers. By using the highly revered art of spirituals, the choir’s commitment to saving the university is one of their most notable contributions to black history.

Fisk Jubilee Singers are an absolute gem, one of the most important and iconic musical groups in the entire history of the US.

Thomas Rutling, one of the original choir passed away in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom in 1915, his memorial in Grove Road Cemetery reads; Late Jubilee Singer. They sing the song of the lamb.

Right! I only know of it from taking a Black Music course in college. Unfortunately, Arts and Music tend to be the first to go, as well as most likely the writers of basic history books tended to follow a very thin line of culture. We ALL, together, have such a rich history in this melting pot. America wouldn't be so amazing today if it wasn't for all of our heritages.

Does Nashville or Tennessee provide any support?

      Probably not knowing the state.

@@JaySmith-mz7vg Well, I know who controls Tenn, if that is what you are talking about. I guess the whole 'woke' thing, like getting vaccinated is politicized. It is the whole white Southern idea of 'us' vs 'them'? The past ruling the present. Is that the state we are talking about? The state of confusion, paranoia and racist denial?

I don't know but Little Richard was living in Nashville towards the end of his life he has died now may he rest in peace in Heaven.

Why should the city and state authorities provide support to a private institution? They may in fact, I don't know, but failing to give a HBU a handout is not evidence of racism, rather its fiscal responsibility. The local government is responsible for public services which benefit everyone equally not for transferring collective wealth to "worthy" causes that only benefit a few.
