Atreyu didn't sink into the swamp because he was wearing the Auryn. It protected him from the influence of the swamp. Even though he was sad at the loss of Artax, the sadness didn't overtake him. The whole thing is pretty much a metaphor for depression. This movie is riddled with allegory, and seeing it as a kid, then as an adult are two very different experiences. As a kid you take things at face value, and you might understand the themes in a rudimentary way, but as an adult...It's a story that grows with its audience. Just as Bastian shared Atreyu's journey, we shared his. "You have to try. You have to care." "It has to hurt if it's to heal." "Confronted by their true selves, most men run away screaming!" "I couldn't hold onto them. The Nothing pulled them right out of my hands. I failed." "People who have no hopes are easy to control." It's scary how relevant these lines and others become when you grow up. And just a bit of fun trivia: The novel this is based on is written by Michael Ende. The author of The Neverending Story's last name literally means End.
Always love seeing another person become a part of The Neverending Story; Bastian shares Atreyu's story, you share his, and we share your's, and so the story continues.
17:45 Little fun fact from a German who has the original book. In the German original edition, the book really looks like this ... with the thick leather trim and the Auryn. what was sewn in from metal.it's really impressive, even if it's not hundreds of years old. Unfortunately, something like this is no longer produced ...
there's a place online that supposedly makes leather bound copies with the Auryn embossed on the cover. They cost about $40+. I don't remember where I saw it but a reviewer said his copy was a knock off so I didn't buy one.

Kudos to Cassie for appreciating the nostalgia of this great classic movie. This movie is almost 40 years old. That’s hard for someone young as you in this generation to appreciate.
The one grain of sand was all that was left of Fantasia it’s something that The Nothing couldn’t take . that’s why Bastian could still see the child empress in the light.
Yes comic books were for kids. At least before they became big BIG business. Back in the 60s they were sold in corner drug stores on rotating racks. And they could all fit on just a couple rotating displays. Now comic book stores are larger than those entire drug stores.
you know what I would have done for a school with an attic i don't know what I wanted more, a racing snail or hang gliding on a bat the music is so perfect, especially the score... it's 80s, it's fantasy, it's timeless
Though most of us consider Artax's death to be THE saddest and traumatizing scene in movie history, the scene that traumatised me when I was little was with the Ivory Tower falling apart and the empress starts crying and screams for Bastian to call her name. That traumatized me so much that I refuse to watch that scene ever again. I always cover my eyes and turn down the volume whenever that scene came up. 😢😢😢😭😭😭😭
Cassie, i noticed you kept looking at Jordan for his reaction and he wasn't that into it. I've been there. I'm with you. This movie was always one of my favorites and is a great tribute to any fan with an imagination.
The original book named his mother "Moon Child" but it was in German. It wouldn't have been weird for a woman to have that name in the 80s because people born to hippies during the 60s/70s often had names like that. But the director of the movie purposely obscured the name with thunder so that it could be any name at all. I had always thought Bastian just yelled, "Mother!" 🤷
@@RelaxwithJC The moral of this story is this: Never give up. and don't be afraid to start over again if anything fails. We grew up with moral movies like this.
Why skip over the biggest reveal in the Never Ending Story's story?! The meta reveal that us watching the movie (or reading the book back in the day) are part of the story. Kind of a major plot-twist when the Child-like Empress revealed that, or just embarrassed you missed that?
It's called The Never Ending Story for a reason! i.e. what if someone else is watching our "story/life" then someone else is watching theirs, and so on and so on!
Canonically I believe his mother's name is Selena, which is a moon goddess. In the book his dad wasn't as straight laced as in the movie, and also definitely looking for him. But the movie ends about halfway through the book and then tacks on a 'beat the bullies' moment. So the reunion with his dad doesn't even happen. :P
I was thinking about how old to show my daughter this movie. I saw it in first or second grade (but I was an 80s kid at that time). I want to keep it so that she's young enough to find it magical but not so young that it's too traumatizing. So does everyone thing that 8 or 9 is a good age?
Just because you've been named by hippies doesn't make you a hippy. Back in high school I knew someone named Sunny Day, and she was most definitely not a hippy by any stretch of the definition. So someone named Moon Child marrying a stuffy business dude is the smallest logical leap you have to make In this movie.
43:05 Not simply a kid's movie as it's a 90 minute cut of the epic novel by Michael Ende. Two sequels were made of this film and poorly done as the original book had the potential to become a trilogy to rival Lord of the Rings films had they been done properly. The story has complex elements of allegory and metaphor that demand analysis and critical thinking from the audience as it presents two parallel worlds that unexpectedly collide. I believe the counterparts in the two worlds are as follows: Atreyu (protagonist)-> Bastion Falcor (luck dragon)-> Old man in the book store (timely rescue) Gmork (wolf)-> The three bullies Morla (turtle)-> Bastion's father Artax (horse)-> Bastion's mother Empress (symbol of life, love and divinity)-> The memory and legacy of Bastion's mother Auryn (neckless) -> The Book "The Never Ending Story" The story at its core is about overcoming despair (the Nothing) and victimhood (Gmork) by undergoing a journey of self discovery and self actualization. At the end of the journey, Bastion emerges into a new world where despair is replaced by wonder and amazement, and victimhood replaced by striking terror into the hearts of his enemies.
Nothing as in Nothing. In the book it was kind of described as when you look at it your eyes just don't register what it sees. No darkness, no light, no anything, just nothing. Even describing it as a blank spot is inaccurate. The book has a hard time describing what it is because there is nothing to describe.
@@RelaxwithJC someone I know just posted in FB that at the end Atreyu gets Artax back. If course! Wouldnt you wish for that? (Guess it wasn't in the movie though.) So I had the courage to watch it with you. 🙂
