I’ve seen people say this game is a “hidden gem” amongst other praise. But the truth is it’s a very lackluster version that hardly introduced anything new. The combat is jank and poor and not very good, it tries to do what the first game did with its really nice arcadey feeling but fails. the levels are copy and pasted from the first game, you can tell by the quality of the levels which ones are Treyarch and which ones are vicarious visions. The old levels play better than the ones developed by VV. and the rogues gallery is identical to the console port. They had the chance to introduce a new villain in this port but they reused the vulture from the first game, a villain we’ve already faced.
I remember first playing this as a rental from Blockbuster. A nice little companion game to the movie (which also came out on UMD the same day). I agree, it does feel like a lite version of SM1 & 2 on PS2. I too noticed the plot presented wasn't fully developed (like John's wedding only coming up at the end, and something about a frighter taking off - a deleted scene was included in the storyboards though). You might be intrested to know there's a fan-made remaster online by The Rev. I think you might like it, as it helps the game look much cleaner and vibrant. Cheers to you, Camp! 🎉
