Singing for so many years, it takes a toll on a persons voice, but he's still amazing. And the fact that he obviously gained weight factors into it because of being winded/breathless (which physically doesn't matter because he's still sexy as all hell... I'm 29 and I've had a thing for him since they came out and I was in grade school). I saw them live Feb 2011 in el paso, great show, I want to seem them again so hopefully they come to ft bragg soon!
Cyndi sings more than you think. She just not out whoring herself to every venue that will book her like Slaughter. Slaughter doesn't play as many shows as you think, they are basically a "Summer" group who only plays Summer shows. Cyndi is out there all year round. The reason Cyndi still sounds great at 60 is she takes her voice & career seriously. Mark obviously doesn't otherwise he'd be working his voice every day and not gaining weight. The weight gain is a sign of complacency.
for the haters who dont know he has had surgery for nodules. gaining weight when you are 47 is normal,Mark is far from fat. he was super skinny back in the day.Fuck Them Mark ROCK ON!
well actually briansparks112 is correct. You see Mark used to sing with what is called a "bridge early" vocal technique which makes you sing very light where you should be a bit heavier/thicker. Sadly, around the age of 35, that area of the voice starts to atrophy and lose flexibility. This is why Mark sounds like this. If he had gone to a vocal coach and learned to sing with more muscles he'd still have his voice. Cyndi goes to one still and thats why she still sounds the same at age 60.
it's not damage - its atrophy of his lower head voice. Marks vocal technique in the 80's and 90's was OK for a younger man. As he passed 35 that lower head voice area starts to lose flexibility. This is why he sounds like this. Add the extra weight and he's fighting a losing battle.
That sounds plausible.... I think the volume of shows is another factor though. Perhaps Cyndi Lauper may sound similar to the 80s because she has not done as many shows as these 80s hair band groups who go out year after year. Just a theory.
did you seriously just compare Mark Slaughter with Cyndi Lauper? Talk about apples and oranges. Cyndi Lauper sings with a baby-talk style voice. Completely different.
cool
Actually the best I've heard him sing these songs in 4 years.
From , North East India, Aizawl, Mizoram.
damn it is hell to get old.
Go away true colors time after time no comparison to this style of music.
I soo wanted to go to this!!! Only 100 miles away. Damn Van!!!

Mad about Mark!
real love me and Mark I wish!
Getting old is harder than you think..trust me, I know. I used to be one of "those" guys.
Yes his voice is now gone, but I LOVE seeing these guys looking "healthy" rather than sickly skinny. :)
His voice isn't gone... his high-end screaming is gone for sure, but he could probably sing differently and sound pretty darn good.
