I bought mine in July 2022 for about £25, and there were no glue marks, and it ran perfectly like yours. However, the interior detailing isn't very visible because it's moulded in clear plastic. So after my purchase, I spent a couple of days detailing it up so the interior would be the right colour, as well as the wooden veranda floor and the white lamp irons and step edges.
Well, when it comes to spilling award for stopping Hornbee may have been taking a break from spelling the ward brake after all we all need a break now and ten. Given how big an impact a few stray glue marks can have, I'm surprised the big manufacturers haven't looked into alternate adhesives. Some of them may come with worker health and safety concerns, which is fair enough, but CA isn't exactly fun to use to begin with. After a few bad experiences with plastic cement and CA glue, I now use plain white glue almost exclusively to attach detail parts, at least on models already painted. It requires more patience, but it's very forgiving and possible to do again if it does break. It also dries clear and has an extremely good price compared to other glues

Don't think I've ever seen a BR blue brake van like that, it looks wrong, especially the all yellow ends. That said, it does look like quite a nice model. With regards to the glue marks, maybe Hornby were attempting to create some weathering haha. Nice review as always. Maybe this is a way Hornby can bring in some easy revenue by re-releasing rolling stock with different liveries at a "value" price.
Oh Sam, what have you done? Now you’ve said that £30 seems really reasonable for a brake van, Hornby will whack it up to at least £45! They cannot be seen to be reasonable, it’s against their whole outlook on life…. :)
Still few of these on the go , been converted to Shark waggons (ballast plough ) we had one to re-rail , but couldn't get jacks under , had to slide it back on
I think I've got a couple of these. One of them I won in a draw at GETS. I was actually talking to Simon Kohler on Hornby's stand when the HM stand 10 feet away put my name out over the PA to go over there. Lets see if I win anything this year, hehe As to the build quality it's definitely the factory throwing them along the production line. Not allowing time to remove excess glue. I've worked in production and never again,
On the brown SECR six wheel brake van #2005, by Rivarossi, they actually have used the word "BREAK" on the side of the van! Great review as always Sam. Thanks.
In Victorian days up until the 1923 grouping, a number of railways did use the word 'break van' for a guard' van or brake van - I know, it looks odd to us, and I've never known the reason why - something to do with the vagaries of the English language, I expect. Didn't know that R'rossi had made a Chatham guards van. D'you mean Rapido?
It may be discounted at retailers but most reduce by x amount and then charge for p&p which cancels out any discount. For anything approaching £30 I would expect at least, sprung buffers and usable lamp brackets, if not a working rear led.
A brake van with separately fitted glue marks. If there is a new model available and it is for Sam's Trains let's send him the worse one we have. Martin. (Thailand)
Hey Sam, I thought of an idea for an alternate coupling style you could use with your era 1 rolling stock. If you made a third intetchangable coupling with a small magnet embedded inside, you could connect the cars together with a real metal chain. They would be stronger than the 3D printed chains, and theoretically be easier to connect together.
This would also create the “slack” that this style of coupling would create. I don’t know when Europe and Great Britain went to the “turnbuckle” style coupling.
Cool looking model with the obligatory nem pockets are very welcome, if or when Hornby invest in a quality control department things will start to get better for them, great price overall to be fair, thanks for sharing.
Hi Sam, try some warm soapy water on a soft cotton bud or cloth on those white glue marks, it's sometimes only misting from the glue vapour. Clear glazing might not be removable though.
I wonder if Sam could put in the brake van , an interior light for the compartment and even a flickering one for the stove , and also a smoke generator for the stovepipe.
Try a cotton bud with a small amount of IPA to wipe away the glue mist. Don't rub hard or long on the paint as it will start to come off, but depending on the glue Hornby used misting can come off. Actual glue stains (rather than the drying mist) probably won't come off so the window fingerprint is most likely there to stay. That said, a coating of clear gloss can improve the windows with glue by reducing the effect.

Hornby's LMS 20t Brake Van looks very nice. It is a shame that your example has glue marks which makes it look quite unsightly to look at. Plus, there is not much separately fitted detail parts on the brake van but the price is reasonable. Overall, it is a pretty good model brake van from Hornby, Sam.
Considering that many model kit manufacturers can make their kits fit together without glue, and that plastic solvents like Tamiya extra thin cement exist, this is completely inexcusable and Hornby should owe you a deep apology.
I do think models should have lamp iron brackets than can take actual lamps. It's a nice detail being able to put lamps on brake vans. And on this it would much improve the look of it.
