  • This is a vintage 1980's Hornby Class 47 Diesel Locomotive, catalogue number R287. However, the previous owner has attempted a re-numbering and a paint job which has left this model looking terrible. However, there is a surprise as the chassis looks almost brand new. So, watch as I take review this tired, ratty Class 47 model railway locomotive and show you its flaws, and also what makes this a great model too.

Reminds me of my younger brother's junkie car that he painted with house paint and a brush plus roller. If you got 30m away it didn't look bad but don't walk up on it, lol. Great video, Jersey Bill

Some Challenges and Educational Modelling Exercises there For Sure, and an Ideal Loco to Practice on - I recently Bought a similar class 47 model from this particular time period in Original condition for £30 Uk, but even a spare Bodyshell Commands Quite a Price in the Preowned marketplace, and often it makes better Sense to buy a Cosmetically good Non runner for Spares and Repairs, swap the bodyshell and either Sell that on as a Non runner or Deal with it as A “Special project” when long winter evenings arrive. Nice little Vid, I’ll check in again 👍🏻

The condition of this bodyshell, retooled to remove all of the original 1975 two-tone green livery raised painting guide lines and with the ends tidied up and updated, is about as good as the old Hornby Class 47 gets, and finding a replacement this good may not be easy (or cheap!) There are ways to remove the existing paint - search them online - I would recommend removing those wire handrails first, using a small flat-bladed screwdriver from inside which, if I recall correctly, will also release the cab glazing - keep all parts for refitting later.

I have a similar 47 to this, 47 568 with came with the Horby Orient Express Train Set. It was my first OO train set, which I got for my birthday some time in the mid 80s. As such it has a special place in my heart. The 47 was never an especially good runner, but somehow good enough. It still works today but doesn't see much use.

Agree with other comment about the body. I would like to strip it and start again. Good chassis but could do with a lubricant all round.

The roof paint is not only horrendous it’s also the wrong colour. I have one and I now have it in the Police livery and I have now hard wired it to DCC on board. It also runs really well. You never tell us what you pay for your models so how much did this cost ? ( if you bought it that is ) regards from Ron 🚂👍😃🚂

The model finished as a Class 47/7. One of the push pull conversions of the late 70s. Used on the Edinburgh Glasgow services, first with a Class 26 at the other end then with the converted Mk 2 coach with driving cab at one end. Were the first dedicated push pull services in the UK. All the 47/7 were named normaly with a Scottish connection.

Not a scrap body, its a spare for someone who could restore / properly repaint it and be proud of it. Hate to see stuff binned, but then the prices for spare (broken or painted) bits like this are thoroughly ridiculous. Of course it runs, its a ringfield!

19.99 pounds for a locomotive. You'll never see this prices again😢

Scale weight is about right for a 47.

How dare you criticize a fellow modeller; he no doubt did his best with what he had at the time. I will never watch your videos ever again. It's so easy to criticize, let's see what you can achieve and with the paints available then.

      @@ModelRailwayNewsReviews What you can do?
Well, I will just have to take the risk. However I do respect others attempts, which clearly you do not, re your comments.
