The Badami Cave Temples are carved into the soft sandstone cliffs of a hill that surrounds the Agastya Lake. There are four primary cave temples, each dedicated to a different deity-Shiva, Vishnu, and Jain Tirthankaras.
Cave 1 (Shiva Temple): This cave is dedicated to Lord Shiva and features a colossal 18-armed Nataraja, an iconic representation of Shiva as the cosmic dancer. The cave also contains beautifully carved reliefs and sculptures.
Cave 2 (Vishnu Temple): Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this cave temple is adorned with carvings of various avatars of Vishnu, including Varaha, Vamana, and Trivikrama. The detailed panels narrate stories from Hindu mythology.
Cave 3 (Vishnu and Trivikrama Temple): This cave is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu and features intricate carvings depicting scenes from the life of Krishna, as well as a majestic Trivikrama panel.
Cave 4 (Jain Temple): The fourth cave is dedicated to the Jain faith and features images of Tirthankaras, particularly Parshvanatha and Mahavira. The detailed carvings reflect the Jain aesthetic.
