- Picked this up at the start of the year and have been listening to it ever since. For a portable SSB Shortwave radio it's a really nice unit. I put it on par with some of the best receivers I've reviewed.

I have the PL-660 with ssb. I have all the cb channels programmed in. Using the extended antenna helps a lot. SSB shortwave radios should be in everybodys shtf protected storage. I keep 2 of them in a padded metal garbage can
Agreed on the storage list. I have one of these in a Faraday cage as well.
@@FarpointFarmswhy in a faraday cage, so they couldn't be microwave blasted into uselessness or what, I'm not hip?
@@keithragain1844 Nuclear electromagnetic pulse. That way you will have something to listen to before the radiation kills you
radiation will not kill everyone- starvation and disease will get the rest
@@FarpointFarms I know this but my question is why the faraday cage ?
Love your videos man thank you for your hard work
I appreciate that! It is comments like this that make me happy that I do this channel
10:01 "Limelight" by Rush is playing ( if someone is interested ).
Cool! good ears!!
I bought this radio for my nephew. It works well.
glad to hear that it is working well
I have an old Realistic DX-60 and a 25 year old Grundig that this one is going to replace. If my Wife gets mad at me for buying another radio I'm blaming you Eric. Lol
Another great video !!!!
Just show what you can do with it 🤷😁
Sorry!! Radios can be a bit of a problem at time can't they?
LOL
Another nice find!
This one is a keeper for sure.
Hey Eric, that is very similar to a couple radios that I have actually four of them for shtf (just monitoring you can pick up a lot of information on what's going on in an emergency).. of course my primary is the Stryker 955 But I find myself just listening to them at night up here in the Northeast.... They are really cool I love them.
Sounds like a cool setup!
@@FarpointFarms It is. I'm a prepper survivalist so I try to cover all the bases.
nothing wrong with being prepared
This looks decent and functional radio with all the modes it has
It covers just about everything, and does it in a perfect sized package.
@@FarpointFarms is it better than tecsun PL660?
I’ve been waiting on a good review for one of these. I think it’ll be on the Xmas list.
It's a very good radio and it's not even that bad when it comes to price.
Impressive little receiver.
It is a great little radio.
Recently bought it. Good radio.
I am VERY pleased with mine.
Have two right now. one hand crank if needed and the other solar backed up . Interesting to hear right now what going on in the middle east right now. When you get a person talking relative good English there is a ton more of what is not being posted on any news.
Agreed. Shortwave gives both side of the story in a way the internet can't.
I have the CC Skywave SSB, an Eton Satellit 750 and had a Kenwood TS 500 (receive only), and 3 GE Superadio II radios. I live on the West Coast and found broadcasts and islands that I never knew about.
I found the same thing when I was down in Florida, there were tons of channels that I picked up there that I never heard before.
I also have had this radio on my Amazon shortlist for years and it often drops price which makes it an attractive buy. I recently bought the fun Raddy RF320 which is a fabulous pocket radio with amazing sound quality and app control, but it lacks SSB and doesn't reach the CB bands which is a shame. Might still have to keep an eye on this set as a slightly bigger home option. 😊
All I can say is that this radio is well worth the money. I listen to it every night as It sits by my bed.
Hi Eric, a nice unit indeed. I have been using this radio for about 3 months now. the SSB has an annoying white noise which my Tecsun and Sony SSB didn't have. did not like the muted tuning dial also. the AM Bands are received well. for the price, it's a good radio. QTH Nagaland. 73
I do feel that the midwave (AM) band reception on this radio is outstanding.
Perhaps of where I'm at or batch etc no white hiss or noise on SSB through out the band.. only issue with mine is it can't take the long wire but an attenuator took care of that etc etc good luck. 👍
I got the Sihuadon D-808 and it is black with USB-C chargeport, I could hear lots of USA station on the CB band channel 6 etc on AM and SSB, MW is not used here in Sweden but in the afternoon, I get UK here on the W-Coast of Sweden.
Cool! CB skip making the trip.
I have a Tecsun990. A VERY well built and sounding SW portable. Goes with me everywhere.
I have a Tecsun 660. I feel this 808 is a better radio.
@@FarpointFarms Do any portable antennas stick out in the crowd? I get such a mixed bag of opinions
I had a Tecsun PL-660. Very poor power with batteries and charger. Just kept draining. Had to remove batteries because there was no way to absolutely turn unit off. Great sw/ssb, but I gave it to a friend. Been 4 yrs ago or so. Has the power situation gotten any better with the Tecsun radios?
@@FarpointFarmsHi, I had a Tecsun PL-660 a few yrs ago and could not keep power too it. The only way to keep it from drawing battery power was to remove them. Also was using my own rechargeable batteries & charger. Is this issue any better in 2024? I think I will try another brand. Just want sw/ssb with no power issues.
Wow this looks like a miniature of the one radio shack DX - 390 radio I purchased many years ago. I wish they made it so it could run on 18650s rather than I think 3 AA and 4 or 6 C cells. It has been a great radio but it's a little large for traveling. I have tried a few that you have reviewed. Some have all the features but maybe I am spoiled but they seemed to lack the ability to pull in weaker stations. I have gifted many of them away. I am considering this one. I was looking at the ccrane Skywave ssb and it seems to have issues and it's not a cheap radio. Will see maybe this one will do the trick.
Of the radios I've reviewed, this one has impressed me as much as the Radio Shack DX394. It's keeper.
I have dx390 n skywave ssb n love it
It run now stop for 3 days on the batteries I got few more portables
But in radio room I use my ic 7000
Skywave is next to my bed
I have a Tecsun PL-368 and a Tecsun PL-660, as you found about 7280 it's obvious Ham radio,as well as cb. I'm also able to get AM 740 way better on my Tecsun PL-660 than my Tecsun PL-368 and AM 740 is from Toronto,Ontario, Canada. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for the info!
@@FarpointFarms regards to AM 740, I live in PA and I have known about it for some time now, not sure how long it's been when since I've found it. The night that I found AM 740, I just threw the AM band and found it, I listen for calling letters and frequency numbers. I also remember hearing there's about 28 states that can get it at, reaching as far south as NC, maybe SC.
If I could get this radio before going on a small trip on the countryside, I will have a lot of fun haha
It is a great little radio
You certainly got your fingerprints on that unit lol. A touchy-feely man indeed.
I like to play- That and I wanted to show off the features
The USB charging should be great. Years ago I would listen to a guy late at night from Walterboro SC or NC ? and fall asleep and wake up with low or dead batteries but that was 20 years ago . That is a nice small radio you just got !
I love the size. Not to big that you wouldn't want to take it on a trip, but to so small that it's impossible to use.
Thanks for the review. After inputting frequencies, can you scan or seek with this radio?
Yes. I love to do late night scans with this radio. It finds all kinds of oddball stuff.
My Grundig G5 has issues. I saw your review last night and ordered the D 808 from Walmart (cheaper than Amazon) last night. Should be here Friday.
Thanks!
Sorry you were having issues, you will have to tell me what you think of the new one
@@FarpointFarmsCame in today and it works great! Thanks for the review.
Been looking for a portable shortwave radio. I’ll have to look into this a little more. I listened to China & North Koreas version of Voice of America the last couple weeks. Pretty interesting stuff to say the least.
I love to hear their side of the story. It's eye opening for sure.
I’m hoping to tune in and pickup some foreign broadcast about what’s going on in Israel.
@hatchetjackphillips- that is where you will get the real news
Thanks For The Video might have to get this radio I have a Tecsun pl- 330 already but one more won’t hurt ha ha
I like it more than my Tecsun 660.
@@FarpointFarms indeed
Hi Ross13ful I have had the PL -330 for 8 months and really like it, but I was thinking the same as you. Just one more.
Nice video Eric
This Chinese radio have came a long way I'm just getting wach this I bin clean shrimp 🍤 for over to day's
After throwing a cast net 8+ hours
My goats got me getting up early tomorrow clean up after the peanut harvest lol free feed for n treat for them n putting some up for me
Sounds like a feast!
I have the Tecsun PL-600 for the SSB feature. Very nice radio. I was looking at these 808s for travelling.
You will love it!
This is the first and only shortwave receiver I bought. I don't know how to use it. I use it for the airband since I live near some airports, but I need to practice some other stuff.
Depending on where you live, there might be a ton of stations or a few. When we were down near Florida- there were so many station that we were able to pick up
That is a nice one. It has aircraft too! Where do you get these wonderful toys? I’m trying to keep up!
As this channel continues to grow, I am blessed with the opportunity to try more and more cool stuff.
I have a Digitech AR-1733 with 4 meters of speaker witless as an antenna; my radio looks very similar to your new one, although mine looks a tad smaller.
Sounds like a cool setup!
How do the CCrane compare to these radios?
I use my hf rig to listen to shortwave, but I'd love to have a nice smaller receiver.
I have never owned a CCrane, but I've always heard great things about it.
Nice portable and like that it has SSB on it.
Everyone always wants the SSB option! Well, this radio delivers for sure.
Night-time radio is a fun hobby.
I fall asleep to it nearly every night.
Although I've purchased a couple of Grundig shortwave radios in my past, think I somewhat prefer Sangean radios. Sangean radios have a more finished appearance, better software user interface, and usually a lot less bugs or engineering defects. Sangean usually includes weather alert frequencies.
Very nice and finally a temperature displayed, as most are using a portable shortwave antenna while traveling and camping!
One feature definitely lacking, is a lit keypad. For some not known reason, almost no to none shortwave portable radios with a lit keypad.
Another item still missing, being able to input a text file via USB or other memory device, for storing frequencies and/or tagging frequencies with an alias. Probably another two decades before seeing these much needed features!
A warning has been published concerning 18650 style batteries, causing fires and explosions.
Good to know. Thanks!
just came in from sitting by the firepit scrolling through the frequencies on my d-808
That sounds like a great way to spend the night
Any ideas on how to change the 'voice/music' setting? Not mentioned in the manual and it doesn't seem to be a long press of the 4 key like the R108.
I am not too sure- If you find out, let me know
@@FarpointFarms appreciate your videos Sir, and greetings from the UK🇬🇧
The Sihuadon D-108 is truly a great SW portable radio indeed! It is one of the best radios on the market!
Good to know!
Does the external antenna connect to the inbuilt sw ferrite rod internally or is it for fm only? When I plug in the cable that came with mine there’s no perceivable difference so I’m thinking it’s only helping the fm bands.
It's used for Sideband. I am surprised it effected FM on your unit. I can't tell a difference on mine with FM use.
@@FarpointFarms oh ok, I was hoping to plug in something longer for the sw am and mw bands. With FM it doesn't seem to change, retract the telescopic antenna and using the wire seems the same on mine.
Its a great radio, good bang for buck for sure. :)
it really is- you don't need to spend a lot to get some great features
Is it worth getting the external antenna AN-80 if you have the included antenna. I have ordered the external antenna too with my XHDATA D-808 and its coming on 2nd Jan , I didnt know there is an external antenna included in the box.
The external antenna is a great thing to add even more channels to the mix.
@@FarpointFarms ok, 👍. great then, it's on the way from Amazon. Have a happy new year.
The XHDATA D-808 has a 3.5mm socket for an external antenna. Is that for a single wire or a paired wire?
I have always used a single wire but I am not sure if that is the correct answer to your question
Farpoint, I'm searching for one of these sw radio, but I would like to find one with an option to record. Have you come across any that hav that feature?
The retekiss V115 has where you can record, not a top of the line radio, but is does have that feature
thanks very much, I'll check it out. I really get a lot out of these videos you've made thanks for posting.@@FarpointFarms
Using the headphone out jack - you can record .
Nice !
Thanks!
@FarpointFarms >>> Great video...👍
Thanks 👍
If that radio is still available by mail order or on line order, I might follow that path.
Check online to see if you can find one
You got 808s attention
Cool!
It's chilly in a room 15c.
Good catch! Yes, very cold in the studio at night.
I received my unit yesterday with high expectations. It did NOT include the carrying case or long antenna. The radio seems to work fine, but I am disappointed with the missing items.
I am sorry it did not come with those- maybe reach out to them to see if they can do something for you
@@FarpointFarms Customer service was great and remedied the issue. Very happy with the unit and the sound is exceptional for the speaker size!
No link to where you got it? Amazon has it but maybe you have another source.
I thought I added a link, I think you can get them direct from xhdata
Question? I have a radio shack DX398 the has a LW button which i have never picked up anything in 25 years. What is LW and does it even exist.
LW or longwave is also known as the Air band. I too haven't ever heard anything on it, but apparently some European stations still use it.
@@FarpointFarms Thanks for answering a question that I have wondered about for many years!!!
iI have an XHDATA D-808. It does the job. REMOVEABLE 18650 battery! I hate devices that have "built-in" batteries. Everything good. For the next upgrade may I suggest backlit buttons.
I agree on the Built in Batteries- they never last as long as they should and the unit is worthless once they go bad
@@FarpointFarms The EU recently passed a law that would make easily replaceable batteries mandatory. I don‘t have mich good to say about the EU, but in this case I will make an exception. Recently I had my iPhone 8 battery replaced. 80€ plus shipping both ways. Total over 100€.
I like the idea of that- I bought an LED light fixture with integrated bulb that was to last 20,000 hours. I think it lasted about 50 before it had issues, it could not be fixed so it went right in the trash- so much for being better for the enviroment
We must be neighbors that station you tuned in 91.5 is less than 20 miles from me. Lol
Cool! I'm on the NC/TN line.
I'm in elizabethton
If you played on note of an Eagles song, Don Henley's team of lawyers would have kicked down your door and dragged you to court.
I have heard the horror stories like that, it is a shame
I also own the XHDATA D808 its a great Radio receiver but the only downside is the "CHUFFING" when tuning its the sudden silence sound between the tuning! My Tecsun PL990X does not have that because it tunes like an analog radio. Other then that its a great radiio I highly recommnd it!
Thanks for sharing that
do does the 808 compare to the tecsun pl330.?
I personally like this radio better.
If you look on the map, Blythe Ca is in the desert no mans land ..cost with tax and shipping etc less than $97 from Walmart. I'm gonna buy a handful of hi capacity batteries for this .. I'll nick name mighty mouse in the house lol Thanks for the info on this tiny beast. 👍
Now time to compare it with my Tecsun 330 Which I thought had the best MW until this thing so far.
You will have to let me know your comparison.
While FM and Shortwave comparable, MW blew the 330 out of the water.. fairly close though with AM loop tuner/conductor to the 330. 330 has external input for the entire band. I'll try that a little later tonight out here in the desert. @@FarpointFarms
I looked and you don't have an affiliate link to it. I found it on amazon and they have a extra $12 off right now.
No link for this one. Just wanted to share.
@FarpointFarms I ordered one and it should be here on Monday I think. I also got one of the roll up antennas to keep with it. I have a couple shortwave antennas made from 2 full size slinkys. I have used them with several different radios to compare the receivers. They really work great however they take up to much space when traveling. I have used just wire and a alligator clip, it works ok I think having one that cranks up will be nicer for on the go. Can't wait to try it out.
@FarpointFarms well amazon did it again. They switched models and shipped one that looks the same but it doesn't have the same features and it definitely doesn't work very well at all. I have a $8 am/fm radio and the one they sent me was good on fm but on am the cheap radio was picking up 7 stations and the one they sent couldn't pick up anything. I am sending it back today, and at this point I am not very happy with amazon. They changed the return policy. I used to print out a label and drop it off a mile away and that was it. Now they charge for that. If I want free returns I need to drive it to a ups shipping center. I rarely return stuff so I am not sure how long ago they change that but it not as easy as it was that's for sure.
I have that Radio, and to b honest its well worth every penny,. The filtering it has is a big big help on SSB. Aircraft band. Good battery life.
It has a lot going for it.
Agreed. I listen to mine every night.
Hi, friend ! Thank you very much for such a good review and detailed answer. differences between these receivers. I want to order the same receiver of the new version. to your collection. There is tecsun pl660 and tecsun pl330. I think the xhdata d-808 will perform well in field conditions, just like the tecsun pl660. Thank you very much for your review. definitely a like from me. I'll have time to wait for you on my channel. 73!
Right on! These are great radios. The Tecsun line of radios are also good for the price.
Did you open it? Does it have SW front end filters?
I did not-
They are out years great little radio for the money
Agreed. For less than $100, it's hard to imagine a better new or used Shortwave with SSB.
Nice size, can't stand these newer receivers that are cigarette pack size, and the VFO on the side is a must, being able to tune manually incrementally is key to sliding in KC's rather than a programmed button that can't dial precisely where you want to. Being your inside a building and still dragging in transmissions says alot, should do incredibly well with an exterior antenna!
7,000 to 7,3000mhz is the 40 meter ham bandwidth!
Great video Erik, thanks for sharing!🇺🇸⚡️🎙😏👍
Glad to share it. I too agree that some of these are just too small and that this radio is just about perfect in size.
I just wish it had the weather band!!!
That is what others have said, maybe the company will take some hints
Has airband and you can listen to airport broadcast wheather band
SWL contest SSB is open now, SWL welcome
I'll give it a check!
What about the airband
Yes. It has that too!
Farpoint farms it is called mw band
Yes, but to the 97% of people who have no idea what that is, The "AM comercial band" has more meaning.
If its not USB c, then it is the older model, using the older board i believe.
Yes, this is the USB C model. LOVE IT!
Farpoint farms to lisn to shortwave you should set the clock to utc
Not a bad idea!
Hi Eric you used to have T-shirt you wore and I think maybe sold in the store but I think the gate keepers of this here platform we’re using had issues with it? I had the saying wrote down but lost the paper….it was talking about the truth and how we can’t say the truth any more? Can you send me that saying again please?
Yup. It was a personal quote of mine. That quote is "The Truth Has Become So Dangerous That it is Now Defined as Hate Speech." And? It's true.

Looks like a 18650 battery....ifvs so...not that common on the outside market. Must get on line.
You have a point. These are super common, but not locally.
MW=MEDIUM WAVE, not "mid wave."
Sorry I misspoke-
get your ticket
ticket?
It looks a lot like a CCrane. Hmm...
Everytime I head CCrane, I think of Art Bell!
Shortwave does NOT give you "unfitered news". It gives you the opposing sides BS as well.
That's true however if you listen to several different countries you will hear similarities and you can pretty much figure out what the truth is. More so than just listening to and watching the news that we get here.
I like to hear all sides and make my own opinion. They truth is there is you can sort through all the bs
What's important is not state sponsored or commercial shortwave stations but SSB and listening to HAM radio operators to hear what's happening on the ground in real-time, the making your own assessment.
Okay, uncurated news then. Curated news is where you report on what someone else (your boss) tells you to report on, and say what you are told to say about it. Broadcast networks don’t report “news.” They tell you what some corporation wants you to know. Non-corporate broadcasters can be very genuine, if inaccurate. It’s called freedom of speech.
True. BBC so slanted. Chinese news a joke. Nothing’s unfiltered.
stupid name really, is there any other use the usb does?? like programming via pc?
The usb is a charger- for many people this is a huge feature
What are some good news stations? I hear nothing but preaching...... I can sometimes get Cuba and Canada.
It's not the channel, it's what on at any given time. Check The websites for channels that you receive to see a listing of what is on at what time. This will give you a better feel for what will be on.
MW stands for Medium Wave., not MID band.
And yet, I have no doubt that every single person that watched this video knew exactly what I meant.
low resolution on the counter.
Not sure what that means.
