Hi Eric, a nice unit indeed. I have been using this radio for about 3 months now. the SSB has an annoying white noise which my Tecsun and Sony SSB didn't have. did not like the muted tuning dial also. the AM Bands are received well. for the price, it's a good radio. QTH Nagaland. 73
Perhaps of where I'm at or batch etc no white hiss or noise on SSB through out the band.. only issue with mine is it can't take the long wire but an attenuator took care of that etc etc good luck. 👍

I received my unit yesterday with high expectations. It did NOT include the carrying case or long antenna. The radio seems to work fine, but I am disappointed with the missing items.
Although I've purchased a couple of Grundig shortwave radios in my past, think I somewhat prefer Sangean radios. Sangean radios have a more finished appearance, better software user interface, and usually a lot less bugs or engineering defects. Sangean usually includes weather alert frequencies. Very nice and finally a temperature displayed, as most are using a portable shortwave antenna while traveling and camping! One feature definitely lacking, is a lit keypad. For some not known reason, almost no to none shortwave portable radios with a lit keypad. Another item still missing, being able to input a text file via USB or other memory device, for storing frequencies and/or tagging frequencies with an alias. Probably another two decades before seeing these much needed features! A warning has been published concerning 18650 style batteries, causing fires and explosions.
The 18650 battery isn’t all that common. At least in my area…. Went many different places to find one. When I finally found one there was only 2 on the shelf. As the associate explained this is something they really don’t sell allot of. Purchased multiples as the hardware store replaced what I bought so I’d never have to search again.
I read somewhere, forgot where, that this was a copy of the CC Skywave. Allegedly, it wasn't sold in the US due to legal issues. I bought mine on eBay direct from China. I don't have anything from Crane either. Going back 20 years, their products were way too overpriced for me to consider them. I guess now with all the competition, they are more competitive. I stuck with my Super Radio and Grundig Yacht Boy. This is an impressive radio.
Is it worth getting the external antenna AN-80 if you have the included antenna. I have ordered the external antenna too with my XHDATA D-808 and its coming on 2nd Jan , I didnt know there is an external antenna included in the box.
@FarpointFarms I ordered one and it should be here on Monday I think. I also got one of the roll up antennas to keep with it. I have a couple shortwave antennas made from 2 full size slinkys. I have used them with several different radios to compare the receivers. They really work great however they take up to much space when traveling. I have used just wire and a alligator clip, it works ok I think having one that cranks up will be nicer for on the go. Can't wait to try it out.
@FarpointFarms well amazon did it again. They switched models and shipped one that looks the same but it doesn't have the same features and it definitely doesn't work very well at all. I have a $8 am/fm radio and the one they sent me was good on fm but on am the cheap radio was picking up 7 stations and the one they sent couldn't pick up anything. I am sending it back today, and at this point I am not very happy with amazon. They changed the return policy. I used to print out a label and drop it off a mile away and that was it. Now they charge for that. If I want free returns I need to drive it to a ups shipping center. I rarely return stuff so I am not sure how long ago they change that but it not as easy as it was that's for sure.
Farpoint, I'm searching for one of these sw radio, but I would like to find one with an option to record. Have you come across any that hav that feature?
@@FarpointFarms I may make a video about it. I have been in to radio for a while now but more in to old Analog TVs and old technology. I may use a mobile Cb radio as a base station. I probably change my channel name so it fits my hobbies.
I also own the XHDATA D808 its a great Radio receiver but the only downside is the "CHUFFING" when tuning its the sudden silence sound between the tuning! My Tecsun PL990X does not have that because it tunes like an analog radio. Other then that its a great radiio I highly recommnd it!
iI have an XHDATA D-808. It does the job. REMOVEABLE 18650 battery! I hate devices that have "built-in" batteries. Everything good. For the next upgrade may I suggest backlit buttons.
@@FarpointFarms The EU recently passed a law that would make easily replaceable batteries mandatory. I don‘t have mich good to say about the EU, but in this case I will make an exception. Recently I had my iPhone 8 battery replaced. 80€ plus shipping both ways. Total over 100€.
I like the idea of that- I bought an LED light fixture with integrated bulb that was to last 20,000 hours. I think it lasted about 50 before it had issues, it could not be fixed so it went right in the trash- so much for being better for the enviroment

I had a Tecsun PL-660. Very poor power with batteries and charger. Just kept draining. Had to remove batteries because there was no way to absolutely turn unit off. Great sw/ssb, but I gave it to a friend. Been 4 yrs ago or so. Has the power situation gotten any better with the Tecsun radios?
@@FarpointFarmsHi, I had a Tecsun PL-660 a few yrs ago and could not keep power too it. The only way to keep it from drawing battery power was to remove them. Also was using my own rechargeable batteries & charger. Is this issue any better in 2024? I think I will try another brand. Just want sw/ssb with no power issues.
I have that Radio, and to b honest its well worth every penny,. The filtering it has is a big big help on SSB. Aircraft band. Good battery life. It has a lot going for it.
I have several radios. The D808 is the least favourite of all. The soft muting "chuffing" when tuning is intolerable. The Tecsun PL680 is in a different league, it doesn't rely on a DSP chip, it's very sensitive and the tuning is beautifully smooth with no muting. The Raddy RF919 is another radio that suffers badly from muting.
I have all three and still prefer the D808 as it is a far more sensitive radio than the other two. I'm pretty deaf on one side and nearly deaf on the other. Perhaps that's why the chuffing thing has never bothered me.

While FM and Shortwave comparable, MW blew the 330 out of the water.. fairly close though with AM loop tuner/conductor to the 330. 330 has external input for the entire band. I'll try that a little later tonight out here in the desert. @@FarpointFarms

Nice size, can't stand these newer receivers that are cigarette pack size, and the VFO on the side is a must, being able to tune manually incrementally is key to sliding in KC's rather than a programmed button that can't dial precisely where you want to. Being your inside a building and still dragging in transmissions says alot, should do incredibly well with an exterior antenna! 7,000 to 7,3000mhz is the 40 meter ham bandwidth! I love these older radios as well. I have many, but not that one. Now it's on my list!
@@FarpointFarms I may make a video about it. I have been in to radio for a while now but more in to old Analog TVs and old technology. I may use a mobile Cb radio as a base station.
I probably change my channel name so it fits my hobbies.
What about the airband
Yes. It has that too!
This looks like a good radio?
I have been happy with it for a while now.
Thanks for sharing that
iI have an XHDATA D-808. It does the job. REMOVEABLE 18650 battery! I hate devices that have "built-in" batteries. Everything good. For the next upgrade may I suggest backlit buttons.
I agree on the Built in Batteries- they never last as long as they should and the unit is worthless once they go bad
Boa tarde, me tira uma dúvida?
Question? I have a radio shack DX398 the has a LW button which i have never picked up anything in 25 years. What is LW and does it even exist.
LW or longwave is also known as the Air band. I too haven't ever heard anything on it, but apparently some European stations still use it.
@@FarpointFarms Thanks for answering a question that I have wondered about for many years!!!
BBC 4 transmits on 198 still to this day.
Got enough wire?
@@ShoMoto-ko1ix Thanks, I will try 198 this evening
I have a Tecsun990. A VERY well built and sounding SW portable. Goes with me everywhere.
I have a Tecsun 660. I feel this 808 is a better radio.
@@FarpointFarms Do any portable antennas stick out in the crowd? I get such a mixed bag of opinions
I had a CB before the big craze so I had my CB license.
Cool! I'm sure the massive influx of users must have been a pain for a while.
Apakah bet tombol nya bisa di matikan suata bet...?
Yes.
Bagai mna mematikan bet tombol nya pak...?
SWL contest SSB is open now, SWL welcome
I'll give it a check!
11th comandment, ¨Thou shalt not run out of sleep¨ lol 11:29
seems like a good one to have
It's chilly in a room 15c.
Good catch! Yes, very cold in the studio at night.
We must be neighbors that station you tuned in 91.5 is less than 20 miles from me. Lol
Cool! I'm on the NC/TN line.
I'm in elizabethton
Nice !
Thanks!
Did you open it? Does it have SW front end filters?
I did not-
If its not USB c, then it is the older model, using the older board i believe.
Yes, this is the USB C model. LOVE IT!
I have that Radio, and to b honest its well worth every penny,. The filtering it has is a big big help on SSB. Aircraft band. Good battery life.
It has a lot going for it.
Agreed. I listen to mine every night.
XHATA or SHUIADON?
XHData~
Farpoint farms it is called mw band
Yes, but to the 97% of people who have no idea what that is, The "AM comercial band" has more meaning.
If you look on the map, Blythe Ca is in the desert no mans land ..cost with tax and shipping etc less than $97 from Walmart. I'm gonna buy a handful of hi capacity batteries for this .. I'll nick name mighty mouse in the house lol Thanks for the info on this tiny beast. 👍
Now time to compare it with my Tecsun 330 Which I thought had the best MW until this thing so far.
You will have to let me know your comparison.
While FM and Shortwave comparable, MW blew the 330 out of the water.. fairly close though with AM loop tuner/conductor to the 330. 330 has external input for the entire band. I'll try that a little later tonight out here in the desert. @@FarpointFarms
👍
thanks
Hi, friend ! Thank you very much for such a good review and detailed answer. differences between these receivers. I want to order the same receiver of the new version. to your collection. There is tecsun pl660 and tecsun pl330. I think the xhdata d-808 will perform well in field conditions, just like the tecsun pl660. Thank you very much for your review. definitely a like from me. I'll have time to wait for you on my channel. 73!
Right on! These are great radios. The Tecsun line of radios are also good for the price.
WELL, HOW MUCH IS IT
No idea!
Farpoint farms to lisn to shortwave you should set the clock to utc
Not a bad idea!
They are out years great little radio for the money
Agreed. For less than $100, it's hard to imagine a better new or used Shortwave with SSB.
I just wish it had the weather band!!!
That is what others have said, maybe the company will take some hints
Has airband and you can listen to airport broadcast wheather band
Looks like my Midland
there are some similarities to it
Nice size, can't stand these newer receivers that are cigarette pack size, and the VFO on the side is a must, being able to tune manually incrementally is key to sliding in KC's rather than a programmed button that can't dial precisely where you want to. Being your inside a building and still dragging in transmissions says alot, should do incredibly well with an exterior antenna!
7,000 to 7,3000mhz is the 40 meter ham bandwidth!
Great video Erik, thanks for sharing!🇺🇸⚡️🎙😏👍
Glad to share it. I too agree that some of these are just too small and that this radio is just about perfect in size.
I wish the LED screen would light up
agreed
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
thanks
Hi Eric you used to have T-shirt you wore and I think maybe sold in the store but I think the gate keepers of this here platform we’re using had issues with it? I had the saying wrote down but lost the paper….it was talking about the truth and how we can’t say the truth any more? Can you send me that saying again please?
Yup. It was a personal quote of mine. That quote is "The Truth Has Become So Dangerous That it is Now Defined as Hate Speech." And? It's true.
@@FarpointFarms Thank you Thank you sir I Truly appreciate it!!
I dream of the day when people stop doing the pointy thing in their thumbnails. I can but dream.
I hear you- my pet peeve is the videos that take 15 minutes and still don't get to the point
If you played on note of an Eagles song, Don Henley's team of lawyers would have kicked down your door and dragged you to court.
I have heard the horror stories like that, it is a shame
It looks a lot like a CCrane. Hmm...
Everytime I head CCrane, I think of Art Bell!
Looks like a 18650 battery....ifvs so...not that common on the outside market. Must get on line.
You have a point. These are super common, but not locally.
Carnival eccentric interesting charging USB c a d f l mini?
I am not sure what you mean by your question, but the receiver is good for the price.
@@FarpointFarms thanks for the reply I was just tossing one out there in case anybody was familiar with that product.
MW=MEDIUM WAVE, not "mid wave."
Sorry I misspoke-
Kenwood thf6a…
Nice radio but very pricey, and not related to this radio at all
@ :(
stupid name really, is there any other use the usb does?? like programming via pc?
The usb is a charger- for many people this is a huge feature
get your ticket
ticket?
Has neither Bluetooth nor sd card slot! Major drawback nowadays !
Never had any issues listening to SW without those features.
