I'm so home sick. I love this song. Sing it with a full voice makes me feel so good, when I'm sober. If I'm drinking, I can easily turn into a blubbering wreck.
Fuck sakes Ian im the damn same, moved to the uk five+ years ago, got a shiny new dual citizenship, but i just want to crank the tunes in my dad's garage back home. They don't even have basements here (Glasgow) and only Coors Light from what i can tell. But ill settle for that!
As a native English man now Canadian, living in Grande prairie and Fort McMurray , working in the oil and gas industries. It didn't take me long to figure out what the realities of this song are. Hits so deep in the soul. We are all lost and looking for home ❤
"All Hell for a Basement" was a description of Alberta's copious natural gas reserves, and Medicine Hat being the "Trap Door" in. As described by the author Rudyard Kipling in 1907.
Lived in Calgary for a year and a half, nothing like out west!! Favourite part of Canada :)) Awesome time for me! Saw The Trews at Calgary Stampede, was blown away!! Love you so much Colin! 💕💕🥰🥰
As a Maritimer who understands the real meaning of this song, it's always fun to see people from Alberta react to it like Americans do to "Born In The USA", like it's some kind of unabashed love song to their province. It's more about Atlantic Canada (where The Trews are from) and those who end up having to travel to Alberta for work than it is about Alberta, hence the sea-shanty-style breakdown near the end.
I've only just stumbled upon this masterpiece and as an Albertan, I've loved this song since I was a kid. I haven't had the chance to see Big Sugar or Gordie Johnson live, but I have seen The Trews at the Memorial Centre in Red Deer. I can only imagine the magnitude of Gordie with an acoustic guitar. hopefully next time I'm back in Canada.
I totally agree. I’ve seen Big Sugar a few times in London,Ontario & Windsor,Ontario & Grady in London,Ontario at “Norma Jeans” & Grady had a kick ass female drummer \m/ Ian Thornley was there that night as well :-)
@Apul Mahdeek Aoud no, Alberta isnt like it used to be. Canada as a whole to be honest, unemployment going up, cost of living is ridiculous where ever you are, does not help with poor leadership.
@@caperboy1169 at the end of the day even if I did she didn't die for my sins. God did. Thanks to Jesus I'm guilt and shame free and can even wish the best to my enemies through the power of the holy spirit. All the best to you sir
Awesome,Acoustic is the best, put out an acoustic album Gordie,Pleaseeeeeeeeee! You and the Trews are a natural together,Cheeriooooooooo Deanoooooooooooo
Actually, originally being from Ontario, i came in 2006. I met Big Sugar a few times. They played in my home town Guelph a lot. This song has a dual meaning as well.
I grew up in Medicine Hat. My 7th grade home room teacher was friends with Gordie and actually got Big Sugar to play at our school just before they broke out with this song.
Yeah maybe a hundred years ago. But since then they been sawing out the floorboards and kickin in the walls. You fall down that hole when you're drunk and that's it for you alright because they forgot to make the stairs out of that place.
Yup pretty much. Its more about easterners traveling to alberta to work in the patch... however the big line, and title is a homage to Gordies hometown, Medicine Hat, which was built on top of a huge pool of natural gas. The legend rudyard kipling once refered to med hat as the place that had all hell for a basement.
Rudyard Kipling loved Medicine Hat, a southeastern Alberta city that’s built on one of North America’s largest natural gas fields. Kipling travelled Canada by train in 1907 with his wife and spoke eloquently of the area’s natural gas on the front page of the Medicine Hat News, saying: “This part of the country seems to have All Hell for a basement, and the only trap door appears to be in Medicine Hat.”
@ROOKTABULA *point out that is is. Sorry. For fux aches? FYI: Alberta, to anyone who... It is not culturally barren or regressive. It is open-minded. All of these statements are correct when you compare it to the United States and most other countries.
@DJIconoclast Alberta saved my ass, Love it here. Let those jealous idiots from the states bash us....it doesnt matter. Would you be offended if a homeless person made fun of your clean clothes or house....its pretty much the same thing. (IM assuming ROOK is amerikan)
I am just about as heterosexual as can possibly be but I think I love Gordie Johnson and I am guessing - (and hoping) - that he has very big young chick appeal!!
1mobrayo its always been a bit challenging to go live... then add acoustic guitars and different styles that makes it far more enjoyable to experience. My family is quite musical and play a wide variety of instruments. From the accordion all the way to the Ukulele.

I'm still convinced this song is about Grande Prarie.

first time flying into GP I was amazed by all the little fires I saw from the plane, gas well flares. I was there to work on them.
Well said. 👍
And the strong smell of diesel fumes right before your nostrils freeze up. Yup, been there

Salt of the earth tune from one of Canada's best. Never get tired of this tune.
Bringing back good memories. When this song was a hit I was living in Alberta Canada.
Live is where its at! A most enduring song and performance - Alberta proud!
It’s awesome how Alberta was brought to Texas,, awesome job guys!!!
As a Maritimer, I can confidently say that the rest of Canada sees Alberta as Canada's Texas... take from that what you will...

It's not the Trews' song it's Gordie's and he IS from Alberta.
As Don Cherry would say good old CANADIAN BOYS got to love em
All you kids watching at home, do I got time to roll the tape.. anyways kids here’s how ya play it.
if ever you ve wondered what catching lightning in a bottle looks like amazing performance!!!
You got that right! 😁👍
I think they should have turned up the bass more.
I liked the added whistling...gave it a sitting by the fire drinking a cold beer at sylvan lake vibe
Good Christ that was well done. 👌
Amen to that! 👍
