Being from Newfoundland, living in Alberta…having done my stint in the oil patch (and hating the lifestyle, not the job) this song brings a tear to my eye every time.
Well holy shit GJ! What a gift you’ve given me today with this video and with this song. I had my fingers crossed that you’d mention the version that includes Sonny’s Dream. I can even clearly see me and my gang in the photo of the Iceberg Alley show. Goosebumps all over again watching this video. Only love from NL to GJ/AJ. Thank you, thank you.
I'm late to this particular party, Gordie, but it sure was fine to see you back in Alberta and sharing this fine tune with us all over again. while listening to the backstory I couldn't help but flash back to the fine music written by Bruce Cockburn for the "Going Down The Road" soundtrack...same folks from Down East, same dream but from a different time...
Thank you so much for this SOUNDSHACK episode! AHFAB is in the class of my all-time favourite songs. Acoustic or electric, standard or open tunings, studio or live and even as a hybrid high school version ;) , this song is as good as they get. Merci!!🇨🇦
I caught your show at Lake Town rock British Columbia today you were the only reason I really wanted to go saw a bunch of bands and great music all weekend but you did not disappoint and thank you for the great music cheers
One of my fav songs from one of my fav CD’s! Love it! .I am from Alberta and glad you mentioned us! Saw your live show in Calgary at the tent about 18 years ago. It was rocking! Your band was so great with that reggae feel but solid rock n roll. Please come back again we miss you.
Beautiful song....always loved and appreciated it....somehow I knew exactly what it was about without even hearing it from you ! Lots of love to Big Sugar from Vancouver ❤️
I'm a workin' man But I ain't worked for a while Like some old tin can From the bottom of the pile I have lost my way But I hear a tale About a heaven in Alberta Where they've got all hell for a basement My words are like a rope That's wrapped around my throat Wash my mouth with soap For words unfit to quote I have lost my way But I hear a tale About a heaven in Alberta Where they've got all hell for a basement I have lost my way But I hear a tale About a heaven in Alberta Where they've got all hell for a basement And now I'm free to go But time cannot remove The only life I know Now only time will prove Yes only time will prove If I have lost my way 'Cause I hear a tale About a heaven in Alberta Where they've got all hell for a basement Yeah, I lost my way But I hear a tale About a heaven in Alberta Where they've got all hell for a basemen
Im a little ashamed to admit im just now discovering big sugar and you Gordie. I guess retirement gives you some more time to explore my musical interests and im just so proud to see another great Canadian patriot. You're amazing to listen to especially in these sound shack sessions. Im from New Brunswick and we arrived in Edmonton in 1980 but the buble had burst by then with a lot less jobs available. I was a teen and I actually found work at 13, my mom did too and the new life had begun. I washed dished all through high school and I went to work full time 3 days after i graduated high school and never looked back until my heath failed at 40. Alberta has been good to me and its home now. Ive got a welding ticket and the big truck license and everything i ever welded on was for the patch. Trucked lots of stuff up to ft mac too. Your song makes me fiercely proud because no one did a damn thing for me out here. All i have is what i earned and with no dad or brothers around to guide me it was a tough road at times but ive learned anything that's any good is never free and needs hard work and sacrifice to achieve. Ill be sitting back and discovering many more great songs you've done in the future here. You make Canada look good sir!
Really enjoyed this video, Gordie. One of my favourite songs ever, being Scottish the Celtic-flavoured melody strikes home with me. Reminds me of the band Runrig. Nice Massey Ferguson also!
@@BigSugarBand thank you Mr Johnson for the many years of excellent music and all the awesome memories made around it! I look forward to many more great things! I'm really digging the Sugarshack series too
Wish I could play guitar with you one day Gordie. I wrote my best stuff while in the copper mines of Princeton BC. Only 4 good songs but together a great jam. Going to see your show this April 15th. Cheers my friend.
About 30 yrs ago, were you ever in a pawn shop in Surrey? Met a young kid and asked him: show me what you got kid. I played Sad but true. You laughed and said good job. Do you know any blues? Lol I had only been playing for 2 months at that point on my home stereo with a 100$ guitar and needed an amp. You showed me my first tube amp. I hope that was you cuz I've been telling this story for 30 yrs lol.😅 Thanks for your music brother. Saved me, a single Dad who was losing a depression battle. All heel would make me tear up. Still does.
F man...Heated Rocks! To me..its as timeless as Physical Graffiti or Goats Head Soup. "You Have One New Message" ... Hey Gord.. I'm dig'n your current hair style.
Yer gonna laugh...saw you @ KDays in Edmonton in 2011...a buddy of mine from TheBear had gave my daughter meet n greet passes for her birthday and ironically BigSugar has always been 1 of her favourite bands...well heres her and me and I'm preggers with little sister at the time...you hit the opening chord on the hydra for AHFAB and Rookie (oldest daughter) is off like a shot for the stage with her uncle, and I'm steamin up the rear like a bloody tugboat tryin to keep up...Dean McM is videoing you guys and I can be heard sayin "scuze me, pardone darlin...comin thru!" on the.audio...to this day the one I was pregnant with LOVES AHFAB and says "i have always loved this song but i don't know why" and we tell her its cause I smuggled her in to a Big Sugar concert!
Still brings a tear to my eye after all these years.
This song is so much better hearing it’s backstory!! From NL and I worked in Alberta!! Love this!!
Got to say I’m a bit relieved you rode like hell up out of Texas for the time being and are safely in Alberta.
It was this song on repeat on the radio stations in Grande Prairie back in early 2000’s that helped me know I had made a good move.

You’re the pride of Canada GJ
Just saw them last week and it reminded me of how much I loved them 30 yrs ago as much as I do today.

Kipling was a heck of a poet. "If" is a masterpiece and so is this tune.
Favourite big sugar song by far
I moved here to Alberta from PEI in 1989, love it here
I love drop open tuning and finally had time to figure that one out! Enjoyed your show in Toronto at the Masonic Temple as always.
Many Thanks
thanks for the explanation, cheers from a fellow Newfoundlander..

Fantastic 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great song, loving these vids.
Thanks for the video! Enjoy Alberta guys!
I'm a workin' man
But I ain't worked for a while
Like some old tin can
From the bottom of the pile
I have lost my way
But I hear a tale
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement
My words are like a rope
That's wrapped around my throat
Wash my mouth with soap
For words unfit to quote
I have lost my way
But I hear a tale
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement
I have lost my way
But I hear a tale
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement
And now I'm free to go
But time cannot remove
The only life I know
Now only time will prove
Yes only time will prove
If I have lost my way
'Cause I hear a tale
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement
Yeah, I lost my way
But I hear a tale
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basemen

I've never been to a campfire that sounded that good. Wow
Very hard to pick a fav Big Sugar tune, but this one is at the top of my daily play list.
Much love my dude ,you are a true legend 👆😎💨
Thank you for your support all these years
@@BigSugarBand 😎 a reply from big sugar, my day just got awesome. Thank you for your music and positive vibes you given over the years.
The best way to survive isolation here in Albertastan is to have a few open air shows....
This was an amazing video, the stories are great!!
Glad to have you back in Alberta, Sir. Can’t wait to see you live again in GP
I waited for this video!!! Ever since you did this on that radio show
That was f****** great thank you for the music

As a Newfoundlander myself, thanks for posting this episode!
Its “But I hear tell...” in the chorus right?
Sure ya knows is it by! 😉
Perfectly acceptable to sing “I hears tell”. Sounds natural to me.
F man...Heated Rocks! To me..its as timeless as Physical Graffiti or Goats Head Soup. "You Have One New Message" ... Hey Gord.. I'm dig'n your current hair style.
I have lost my way but I hear tell of a heaven in Alberta… god damn it… Neil Young, Ian Tyson said it no better
I have maybe an odd question Gordie… Did you once live above a bar on Bayview Avenue in Toronto? Maybe where you met Gerry?
Hey Thanks, Eh

Eh? 🇨🇦
Dude…
This song defines the aesthetic emotion for me,,, an anthem from my spinning chain days.
