Lurs - A Unique Architectural Village - Discovering A Charming Medieval Village

- Perched on a balcony above the middle valley of the Durance, the village springs from a cascade of olive trees. Lurs stretches out like a spur between the castle to the north and the seminary to the south.
Historians agree to attribute the foundation of Lurs to Charlemagne. At the beginning of the 9th century, the emperor placed the place under the supervision of the bishops of Sisteron, who built their summer residence there, then a seminary: this building, rectangular, massive, is the result of several construction campaigns.
The church, attested from the 9th century, has been brought up to date many times and enlarged to adapt to the demographic evolution of the population. The monumental portal of the church is accompanied by an ornate door.
The domestic built heritage, saved from the ruins for a few decades, shows a restoration in good taste which earned the site to be listed as a remarkable landscape. The clock tower, crowned with a wrought iron campanile, spans the lane which controls access to the old village. Doors with monolithic lintels, mullioned windows, corbels are all elements of ancient architecture to be discovered along the streets.
Clock
A pleasant theater has been set up on a natural slope of the land: these stone steps do not date back beyond the 1960s.
Marius Theater
To the north of the village stands the silhouette of the castle, the fruit of various eras. On the left of the building, sections of limestone rubble walls and the base of a tower date from the Middle Ages. From there, "the promenade of the bishops" starts: this path, lined with fifteen oratories, leads to the chapel of Notre-Dame de Vie.
Bishops Walk
The small road which joins the priory of Ganagobie spans the ravine of Buès on a Roman bridge; this work of art linked to the Voie Domitienne which followed the Durance is a tangible witness to the impact of Romanization which so strongly marked these highlands of Provence.
