I really liked how you framed the value of those early 20th century coins as "pints of beer". That really makes the value understandable. And yes, that was a great loss!

New coil brought good luck. I don't think 20k subs by April is gonna be any problem at all. I bet you have them by the end of the week. As long as you are digging Roman coins, people are gonna sign up. Plus, you know what you're digging and are very good at relating the history without going on about it. IMO, you're the best metal detecting channel out there right now. Keep swingin'. Cheers.

4 silvers in one day is always a great day, and two of them are from Roman times. You set a high bar to reach. I see you are already at 19K subscribers, so 20K is just around the corner. Congratulations

Wasn't sure at first if the decision to add some face time at the start of your videos has any benefit, but you were right to do so. It adds to our familiarity with you. John can't honestly say "ugly mug" anymore because we see it isn't true. Rather, it proves you aren't a robot or a made-up character from dime store novels. The real flesh and bones help us understand the challenges you guys (and occasionally gals) tackle each time out. Thank you, the Scottish Detectorist(s), for always keeping it fun and interesting.

Forty percent of Hadrian's Wall was originally built of turf and timber. The Western section was the turf and timber part. This Western section was then rebuilt in stone as late as Septimus Severus's reign and became known as "the narrow wall" as it is substantially narrower than the original eastern stone section.

This is my first time watching your channel. I must say I enjoy your humor and your accent, although I'm told I have one as well. My ex-husband metal detected as a hobby. Unfortunately, he saved every blasted metal thing he dug up and store them all in glass jars. Why? I don't have a clue. Those stupid jars traveled with us each and every time we changed military posts. He would find lots of jewelry under water in Hawaii as swimmers would lose their rings due to tissue shrinkage of their fingers. That was the upside of his hobby. Take care of yourself. Your ratio of coins to other finds is really remarkable. Half of your relevant finds were coins in this video. Who does that….in a plowed field no less? Amazing. So even if today was exceptional in that regard , for sure you are consistently finding old coins in well hunted fields. People had to be emptying their pockets for you…..lol….like leaving some wealth for posterity! 10 pence by one fellow, agree with you on such a hideous loss of beer! But Where is the cutlery, the knives , horse tack, the ammo? I know you find these items also, but the ratio is all off. God bless you my man, I hope the detector gods continue to smile on you.

Thanks Kevin, you are right though you are getting a very skewed representation of what I find versus what I find that’s good!
From time to time I post a ‘here’s everything I find’ video that shows you how much trash we do get and trust me, there’s lots! Today I did five hours and had over 80 dug targets of which it think 5 were ‘good’
This field is about 300 acres. In the old days an acre was what one man could plough in a day with 8 oxen 🐂
So it would take 30 days to plough once a year. Let’s say the farmer dropped 1 coin and 2 buttons during that 30 days he’d lose 1 coin and two buttons a year. In 100 years that’s 100 coins and 200 buttons lost.
500 years of farming that’s 500 coins and 1,000 buttons lost, and that doesn’t account for the dozens or even hundreds of workers that would be in that field at harvest time.
So basically there’s lots of coins and buttons out there let alone all the other stuff! 😆

@@thescottishdetectorist I see the math makes reasonable sense for your coin and button finds. Some detectorists show their bucket of junk at the end of their videos, so it is understandable when for each bucket of junk a small handful of “good “ finds result. Since you show the occasional piece of junk I was assuming you were showing most of the junk . Obviously you are not if you dug 80 targets.

@@kevinallen9009 I figure not everyone wants to see me dig 75 bits of junk and 5 good things but I think I should do another ‘here’s everything’ video or as you say show the junk pile at the end? Many thanks

@@thescottishdetectorist hey John, make no mistake I was not doubting your ethics whatsoever, if you were thinking that could be a thought from your subscribers. By the way I wanted to mention I’m sure all your viewers appreciate your excellent ability to identify the Roman coinage and history . It makes it so interesting.

Another amazing day out swinging....I so wish we had history that old but sadly our finds detecting at the oldest are early 1700s...but I do find eyes only finds that are 8 to 10,000 years old.

Another fantastic video. Full of fact and knowledge. I've just found my first Antonius. Your luck has rubbed off on me. I can't find four silvers in one day tho. Fun fact with all your knowledge do you know what Deus means in Latin. I only found out today. I'm probably the only one who didn't know. I've used Deus for six years.🐝
