I have this in black…love it…my only thing is that I wish I had waited and got one of the 5HH ones (double humbuckers) I loved the sound from the 5HH more (I think) besides having more control over the pickups and having a lot more output
Hey Nicholas, actually I prefer the single humbucker. The sound is better in my opinion. Also, if you do a lot of slapping, that neck pickup gets in the way.
I just bought the same one today! It was in gloss black with a maple neck and fretboard. I agree that the neck feels great. The color on your bass looks amazing man !
I think Sterling tweaked the preamp or pickup a year or two ago on the Ray 4's & 5's to keep the bass boost from overloading. They sound better now. Keep up the videos, they're great 👍.
Great review! I bought one.....love it.....watched your review to see if I got a regular one, or a unicorn. Thanks for the review and the no nonsense, real world bass.
Good honest review. In the past I've had three Stingray 5 strings USA. Like you after about twenty years went back to the P-bass with flats and string mute and love it. However I just bought the very bass you got there. Sometimes I just need lower notes. This bass played great, sounded great and I use roundrounds for this bass, and it doesn't have the series, single coil and parallel switch that I hated. Thanks Jon
I have a sub ray 4 , left handed model. Unfortunately, all the older models with the huge SUB logo, came with a factory issue that made the basses sound distorted. Therefore, equalizing a Sub Ray bass and getting a decent sound was very difficult. As I see it, these "cheap" Stingray basses present a disparity: they are very comfortable to play, but the sound leaves a lot to be desired, they have a dull sound and the slap sounds lifeless, even with new strings. However, by changing the preamp and pickup for a SMB4DS combo (seymour duncan ceramic pickup + preamp of the same brand) the sound of the bass changed 180º. Now the bass sounds incredible, with a lot of definition, power and clarity in its sound, almost like an original stingray. My final verdict is that these basses are a very good platform to make modifications. For a novice or someone who is not very demanding in the sound , could be useful this bass as it comes from the factory, but if someone wants to give a more professional use to this instrument, I recommend changing the pickup and preamp. Greetings and peace.
I find that you can make any bass sound wonderful with processing. The sound is what is coming through the camera as if you were sitting in the room with me.
I bought this one yesterday and I really enjoy it. Thank you for sharing.👍🏾
Glad you like it!
Love the no nonsense, to the point, honest reviewes. Cant wait to check one of these out!
Thanks, Chris!
Just picked this badboy up. I love how it sounds and feels.
Hey, SDGirl, great, I'm sure you'll have great luck w

Thanks Bob!
The hot preamp ones were made in China, the tweaked ones are Indonesia. That said, the Chinese ones were more consistent.

Hey Jon, yes and you can't beat the price!
Hey Jon, I think you made a good choice, and for the price, you can't really go wrong!
Thank you pointing out the videos where the reviewer uses the b string as a fancy thumbrest
Yeah, kind of funny that they do that. Makes me think that the B string sounds like crap!
Time + Experience × Willingness to Learn = Wisdom. Sage advise 👌
Hey Dave, exactly!
Very Good Review
Thanks!

@@BobBlackBass you are welcome!
New colors 2022???
Yeah!
I noticed difference onvolume playing different strings...
Hey luis, probably just my attack.
I bought one and i noticed that problem, the first string wasn't as loud as the other ones, i changed the strings and that solved the problem
🖕Basses are getting better overall these days. CNC etc I guess. It's not out of the question to find a good/passible sounding bass for under 500.
Hey Richard, I agree! I often wonder how they can make them so inexpensive.
The sound of what ever you are playing through isn't doing the bass any justice . It sounds like a cheap bass played through a cheap amp.
