Fix A Flat + Motorcycle Tires, Will It Work

  • My thoughts on using Fix-A-Flat, or other similar products in motorcycle tires. I had a situation here I did not have the means to make a roadside repair, and leaving the bike and coming back for it was not an option, so I gave tire repair in a can a try.
    WARNING!!! I DO NOT recommend this unless it is a emergency repair, and then you MUST have it properly repaired when you reach safety.

    Really want to thank you for this video. Just bought a new bike and has tubes in tires. Was wondering if FAF would seal the tube well enough to get the bike to a shop and avoid having it swinging around on the back of a PU truck. Going to add a can to my pack. Thanks loads.

    I had my first flat in 44,000 miles on my BMW F800GS (spokes and tubes) this week. The axle was corroded in the bearings, so I couldn't get the wheel off to change the tube. There were no visible nails or screws and the air was hissing out the base of the valve stem. A convenience store had a can of Fix-a-Flat and I shot in in as directed. It maybe slowed the rate of leakage, so I could make short trips looking for a bike shop (Susquehanna area on PA/MD border). After 2 hours I quit looking, Ubered 80 miles home, rented a trailer, returned to recover the motorcycle.
    I found a piece of rusted steel wire, invisible on the outside, but poking 1/4 inch through the tube. The wire must have sealed the tire so the air found the valve stem. Even if I had replaced the tube in the field, I likely would have missed the wire, and punctured the new tube. I'm seriously considering the tubeless options so I can plug and go. Ordered tires, tubes, axel, bearings, seals, spacers (where the seals rub) to complete the $1K outing.
    A can of Fix-a-Flat is too heavy to carry for the low-odds scenario of a field fix. Unpressurised Slime might be worth it if you carry a pump or CO2.

    Thanks for sharing. I have a tube in my motorcycle, I like traveling the dirt roads of national forests. I was wondering if fix-a-flat would work in a pinch. I'm definitely going to add some to my pack I carry on my bike. It should get me back safely.

      You can convert tube rims to tubeless rims for under $60

    Can you use fix a flat on a 2 wheeler? Or should I take it to a bike shop? Thx

    This answers my question, if it’s an emergency short term repair it could get you to a shop. Thanks for sharing.

      But be prepared to be turned away. Some shops wont work on a tire with FixaFlat in it

    TY for posting. A flat would ruin my day if I had to call a tow truck for a fun outing.

    Thanks! Glad you addressed this. Did you ever disassemble that front tire to see the mess inside? I'm wondering if it was a hassle to clean the rim the next time you swapped tires?

      I pulled it apart to fix it properly once I got it home. It wasn’t bad at all to clean up. A little hot water and it rinsed right off. Squeezed as much as I could back out of the tube before I patched it as well.

    Yes, That is the one down fall of tube tires, I have had two flats on my Indian Chief and had to sit, My other bike is a Royal Star with radial tires and I have had to plug them already to get me home, I carry a plug kit and an air compressor that hooks to the battery in the saddlebag, But my Indian with tube tires is worrisome, I understand that there is a way to seal the spoke wheels so you can run radial tires, What is you thoughts on that? My concern about that is if the spokes would flex it could brake the seal, Any information is appreciated. 🐺

    I put some In a bicycle tire with tube. Tube seems to hold air but randomly went flat after 30min ride. Aired it back up rode home no loss of pressure. I have tubes coming but i cant see any reason fix a flat wouldnt work. Just like slime and seals everything except a pinch flat. The failures i have seen would be using too much or not putting hole toward the bottem after filling with sealer. I have used faf on car tires showing wires which had a leak put wires to bottom filled tire let stuff come out till it stopped. Never got an unbalance wobble. For car tires its a mess especially if customer doesn't warn u ahead of time. Mess is easily avoidable if you know its in there before hand

    Just wondering--Did you find a puncture?--Nail or etc?--Thanks

      Yes, I did. Little back story, we purchased the bike for my wife with the plan to ride it home. The previous owner met us at a Walmart 2 hours from our house and about an hour from his. As I was getting ready to leave on the bike I noticed the tire was loosing air. When I pulled it apart I found a wood chip, or a piece of mulch in the tire where the hole in the tube was. I presume it ended up in there when the previous owner mounted the tire and finally worked its way through the tube. Cleaned out the tire and patched the tube and have gone 2+ years with no issues. Just wanted to show that n a pinch it is a viable solution to get you off the side of the road.

    I was wandering how much did you put in the tire before you put air in it

    • @JosephVollmar
      @JosephVollmar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole can. No reason to ship on it as it was a temporary fix to get off the road and to a safe place to properly fix the tire. I carry a plug kit on my bike with tubeless tires, but this was a tube tire and had no good way to Jack it up and pull the tube where I was.

    I have a question? After removing the Fix-A-Flat from the inside of the tire will the tire regain its original shape because it was wobbling

    • @JosephVollmar
      @JosephVollmar  ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn’t wobbling, the fix-a-flat will actually work as a liquid tire balancer.

    if I have a flat tire on my tire with tube on my honda shawdo would it get me a tempoary fix

    • @JosephVollmar
      @JosephVollmar  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it would be a temporary fix to get you off the side of the road into a safe place where you could repair it but I wouldn’t ride any farther on it then you needed to. The motorcycle in this video had a tube in the tire as well.
