Some May Criticize But I Understand My Dad’s Signing And That’s What Matters

- This video is the fourth and last video my Dad and I filmed together last Fall. From time to time, throughout the years, I have gotten comments criticizing my Dad’s signing but I never replied to those comments. I have been meaning to make a video about it but I kept putting it off. Then last fall, my Dad and I spontaneously filmed a TH-cam video together and then I asked him to film a few more videos with me, to help me get started, to get in the habit of filming a new video every week and as usual, there were a few criticizing comments but it wasn’t until I read that one comment saying that ASL 1 students know more signs than my Dad 😒 that I finally made a video about it. I’m not upset about these comments but they really don’t understand and I wanted to explain- I’m very blessed that my parents even sign because not many hearing parents of deaf children learn sign language to communicate with their deaf child. Yes, there will always be people who criticize, that my parents’ signing should have been better but really, it’s a blessing that they even sign. I’m so grateful they chose to learn sign language to communicate with me, I really can’t imagine my life otherwise. I hope to encourage more hearing parents to learn sign language and have a good relationship with their deaf child as it will really enhance their lives.

Sometimes the few bad comments seem to weigh more than the good ones. Don’t let them take away your peace and happiness that you always share with us :)

Hello. I’m deaf. I would have given anything to be able to sign with my family. It saddens me sometimes how a few people in deaf culture get specific with this. I get people wanting to ensure ASL is respected as a proper language and all but I must say it does hurt when people comment about things that miss the point.
The point is that you can communicate. The point is that you feel respected by your father, mother , sisters or anyone else in your life. The point is that we try our best and THAT is what should be celebrated. Because what’s worse is to not try, to not show up.
You see what I’m saying right. These kind of comments would deeply deeply bother me. I don’t feel happy people have said things like this but please know not all deaf people try to be super perfect or exclusive. And a lot of people who have the time of day to add feedback like that have a level of privlage maybe there not as aware of. Ash you know what matters. Your very smart. You know what matters at the end of the day. Love you and your family. Wishing y’all the best and good vibes.

Plus I think it’s just amazing when someone tries. That is what counts. I don’t use my voice at all. It’s lonely. I couldn’t care less if the sign isn’t perfect haha I am so uplifted just because someone tried !!
I think that's silly for people to criticize her dad's signing. It's not his first language 💁🏻♂️
That's like criticizing parents for having an accent or incorrect grammar in English when their first language was Korean, or Spanish, or something else.

Dear Ashley, as a guy who works with deafs for lot of years, it is so rare thing to find any families who try to learn signs. So, I can say you are blessed with such a communication. Other thing is: there are always some "home signs" all the deafs and hearing use just inside their family. Same as some deaf schools have their "own" signs no one outside can understand. We even play game sometimes with my pupils: if somebody doesn't understand sign, I finger-spell that word, and then group show their signs. As a guys from different schools and towns, we always got 2-3 signs. Pupil always felt a real happiness anytime they found new signs, or how different and colourful can be some signs. My brother is hard of hearing and growing up we learned sign (he was born in the late 90s) I remember really corny VHS videos and going to some beginner family classes since there's a deaf community where I grew up. My dad went to college to learn. I didnt realize so many hearing parents didnt learn or teach sign to their deaf children until I became an adult and it mortified me. Communication and expression is a necessity for everyone. No one should criticize as long as you are doing your best.
I literally cried at the beauty of this video with your father. You and he have a beautiful relationship and your love and respect for each other is so obvious. Any child, hearing or deaf, would be blessed to have him for a father. And any parent would be equally blessed to have you for a daughter. You are gift to this world, Ashley.
I'm learning sign for my toddler and honestly I will be thrilled if I can get to your parents level. It's not easy, especially working a full time job and learning as much as possible at night but I'm determined to do what's best for my baby.
I think your dad is great at singing and he’s very expressive because he loves doing it. Sign language is one of those languages where being passionate makes it more fun to do/speak. When I’m sign I don’t get into it as much as your dad does but that’s ok because everyone is different.

Proud of ur dad, I would love to learn that language, and he didnt give up even with his mistakes, some just stop doing what they love cause of criticism but happy that he continues sign language isnt a easy one
You don't have to justify yourself to others. You communicate as you can best understand each other. I also talk to my parents with gestures. They understand me best when I speak with them. Both sides try to have a deep understanding. I turn on my voice and they speak for me with their hands. Just like you. I'm also so happy and blessed to have a deep relationship with my mom. You can tell he truly loves you. That is what matters. Whether or not he signs perfectly isn’t important. He try’s his best because he cares about you, loves you, & wants to be a part of your life no-matter what. He should be proud as he has raised a daughter that is not only smart, but beautiful inside and out.
Your father seems sweet, amazing very care free and it's completely obvious that your father loves you to no end. Please don't let TROLLS steal your guy's sunshine and stop you guys from doing these video's, there wonderful and thank you for sharing your father and yourself with the world. There's always someone who doesn't like something someone's doing out here in today's society either on this platform ( TH-cam) or grocery store, you just have to ignore them and keep going which I'm sure you already know this Ashley. ❤❤

Considering the stats on how many fathers do not bother to learn it at all, I would say that you are a lucky woman to have such a loving father.

I stumbled on to your channel after someone signed a question to me while we waited in line. I had never experienced that and did my clumsy best to reply but thought it would be nice to at least learn a simple phrase. After seeing this video with your dad and hearing a little of what your experience has been like I feel like I really learned so much more. Thank you for sharing!
His sign is absolutely amazing actually. I’ve been learning for about 4 years but I’m still not even fluent. No where near it 😂 but it’s so cool that I learned so much from just watching this video 😳
His signing is great! People should NOT be criticizing your family who is trying their best, they should be criticizing the families who don't make any effort to learn sign. He seems so sweet.
My uncle lost his hearing(age 2) in the 1930's. He was sent away to a deaf school. The family never learned sign language beyond a few very basic words. If this family is trying, be supportive. Additionally, language is naturally acquired when we're young and that innate ability kind of switches off very early making language acquisition more difficult with age. An older person is going to have an exponentially harder time becoming conversationally fluent.
How dare anyone criticize his ability to sign. They're both amazing people and should be proud of themselves for their ability to communicate so effectively. Shame on anyone who would criticize them in that capacity. Keep helping the world y'all ,we appreciate your help in educating us.

From what I see your dad is doing great signing. I think as long as you know what your dad is trying to say to you is all that matters.
Thank you for this video. I think you’re all wonderful. I’ve learned sign language for three years now with my 3-year old and can understand only a smidge of what your father is able to sign!!! His dedication is inspiring. I’m half-deaf and wear hearing aids and I really want to learn more!!!!
For crying outloud some people can't even speak their first language perfectly! There are many words I can't pronounce, I have to ask my husband what they are. You are both right the whole point is that we communicate well with the people we love.
I just found your channel and I wanted to let you know that your family is awesome. I wasn’t aware that some parents of deaf children never try to learn sign language. I had some friends in high school that were deaf, and I tried learning as much as I could from them to be able to communicate. People need to learn to keep their comments to themselves if they have nothing nice to say...and your dad should be proud that he’s working at learning as much as he can.

Enjoyed watching this! I can understand your Dad's signing and I am glad I learned sign language from my Mom since she taught for the school for the deaf but I am also really good at reading lips though. I was adopted from Seoul, Korea and came to America when I was 10 months old, I was born in 1982. I have been hard of hearing most of my life but in the last 10 years became profoundly deaf but was able to have right sided cochlear implant surgery on September 6, 2019 and waiting to hear about left sided cochlear implant surgery. No one is perfect and everyone signs differently but I am glad I can still understand what people are saying since I can understand most signs. I am blessed to have wonderful parents that helped me learn.
I'm a CODA and I think its amazing that your family has made an effort to communicate with you. I know so many of my moms friends who are deaf and have hearing children they cant really communicate with. imagine that? I also have deaf friends who grew up either in a household where noone signed but they however went to a school for the deaf. I also have a friend who went to main stream schooli ng and knew no ASL at all. He is hard of hearing. I met him at Gallaudet University. Before year two he was a beast !! There is a lot when it comes to families with deaf family members. Its hard for everyone. but you are def a blessed one to have the family you have. Eff the people commenting. They obviously don't know anything!!

I think it's fantastic that he learnt (and is still learning). Learning a second language isn't easy for an adult. As they said, its communication that matters so as long as they understand each other

You know Ashley you have really inspired me to sign even though I can speak and there is a woman at Walmart that is deaf but I wanted to know more about her world and then before we got into this lock down I saw a guy being mean to her he was trying to find something down the aisle she was on and got frustrated with her and then I got really mad at the guy and he knew not to do that again. I feel a similar way with communicating with my parents. They learned English and made sure it was my primary language. When they speak English, their have their own distinct mash-up of grammar and an accent that was also just normal for me to hear and understand. Nowadays, they text and type the same way.
Thank you for doing this and showing that our loved ones putting in effort is what matters the most. Putting this experience into the word helps broaden people's horizons. It's really on them to work through their ignorance and/or intolerance.
Oh I just love your Dad!! He is doing very well learning! You two communicate very well!! My husband and myself were learning sign language with our daughter who went deaf after having very strong chemo therapy for cancer. We all were learning together and doing very well! My daughter passed away when she was eight. But I still sit and sign to her so I continue to remember how to sign, but I only learned what she did in those very short 8 yrs I want to go back to sign language classes again! But I don’t want a teacher who will just push and push you know? I want a teacher who will take their time and make sure I’m getting it!! Again I’m so happy that your Dad is doing his signing for you! You are so right about the parents who never learn to sign to their deaf child and I just don’t know how they can do that to the child , I would be so angry if my parents would have done that to me if I were deaf. Ashley, I took ASL 1 in High school, but it’s been many years and I now work in a restaurant and would love to communicate with my deaf tables. Where is the best place to go to learn? Videos to watch, etc. Reading sign is harder for me as most deaf people are so fast and I’m too slow. I love watching your videos. Thank you for helping us all understand more.

I have deaf clients that I use my cryptic sign language with. They say it’s fine and they understand me. They are very forgiving- so my signing continues to improve.
You guys have an amazing relationship, with obviously clear and heart felt communication 🥰. You both show so much pride in each other. If the communication works for you both, there are zero problems/Issues. It's not like he's giving ASL lessons or signing up to be a professional interpreter🤷♀️ he's simply chilling with his daughter. It's no one's business. I love his smile and his confidence 🙌 he's as solid as a rock, so caring and you're very blessed to have him 😊👍

I'm an ASL 1 student and I just found your channel recently. I have already picked up a lot of signs from your videos just by watching you and your family sign. I'm obviously not even close to fluent yet but I still think your dad signs great! I'm trying to learn the most I can but my class is very slow paced. There is a Deaf man at the nursing facility my grandpa is at and I saw him sign thank you one day so I went up and started signing with him and although I didn't understand everything I could tell he was very patient and understanding. That was a few weeks ago and since then I have tried to learn the most I can and I learned a lot of questions and conversational phrases so that I could ask him things. He's a super kind and patient person and I feel bad because I asked him if anybody signs with him and he said no. It made me really upset to know that he has to try to lip read and write things down because nobody knows sign or cares enough to learn or get an interpreter for him. I always make sure I at least sign for a few minutes with him every time I go so he can feel included too!
All that matters is you guys love and are able to communicate this . Keep up the great work Ashely! !!!!

Thank you for sharing. I think that having an appreciation for your dads effort and encouraging him rather than correcting has fostered his love to communicate with you. At least, it would with me :) and it encourages me to try to communicate with others while I am learning! I only hope I am lucky enough to find someone as patient as you!

It's so crazy that people think it's ok to criticize anyone for trying to do ANYTHING that is different than what they already know. Learning a new language can be very hard. Some people may never "perfect" it. What matters is that 1) They are trying to better their relationship with someone else by trying to communicate and 2) They are trying to better themselves by expanding their horizons. The only thing that matters is that y'all understand each other. It's so very clear that you have an amazing relationship with your dad and y'all communicate better than some of us hearing people manage to do with our parents. Shame on anyone that has anything negative to say about your family and how they communicate with you. And thank you very much for being so open with us and helping us learn your language.
It is a blessing Ashley, but I also know where they’re coming from. They want to know why the dad doesn’t know the language of his daughter, and that’s understandable, considering SEE is not ASL. But as long as you guys can communicate, I see it as a blessing. 😍

I am a special needs parent of two verbally challenged autistic teens, I picked up signing(less than 2 yrs back) to help my children wth their self expression and as an alternative communication.....your dad is a cool dad and inspired me to not give up on my signing too..it's not perfect but I try my best💪 God bless your dad and you🌈

As a person trying to learn ASL without anybody to work with one-on-one having your Dad both speak and sign and go at a speed that he is doing is very helpful indeed for those, at least me, trying to learn. Thanks for this great video, please make more like this. There is so much more than just reading through the ASL dictionary 3 times cover to cover and videos like this where your father isn't going super fast is very helpful.One of the main problems with your other videos is that you are obviously so much better, and faster, than people just learning and someone like me needs (finds very useful) someone who can both speak (so I can hear) and do the sign at the same time. Again more videos like this would be very helpful for teaching people who don't know or interact with deaf individuals on a daily or regular basis and want to learn. Good day & God Bless...
I really love your videos especially with your dad. He is signing with his heart! Expressive! I totally agree that language is for communication. Actually no one can be perfect about languages. I am Japanese but I do not speak "Perfect" Japanese. NO NO! I just speak MY Japanese :) I love people trying to talk to me in Japanese. My English is not perfect at all but people understand me during my tour in Japan and we are happy because we enjoy our communication. I also realize people sign in many different ways. This video is very very helpful and encourages me learning ASL more. Arigatou.
My parents were told when I was little that they would pick up slang signing. I would have assumed that was what your dad was doing.

Pay no mind to the criticism. Your dad epitomizes signing with heart. You have a beautiful family with so much love shining through. The world would be a better place with more families like yours!
I just don't understand one has to justify how one communicates within one's family. Even among speaking families, if one is born to foreign parents of different mother tongue, the children will grow up used to hearing their parents making mistakes when talking/writing... I don't understand what is the big deal as long as everyone in the family feels able to express own feelings & thought and knows to be understood. If people criticise, it's because they don't understand and have had limited experiences... so, nice of you to share with them your experience for these people to learn how different families may be across the globe in different circumstances and surroundings, but no need to justify yourself or members of your family.
The point is to communicate not to be a purist. To love each other as a family and to care for one another by learning how to communicate with each other, when so many don't, is so beautiful. Thank you Dad and thank you Ashley. 💓➡️💯

One of my great-grandmothers was born deaf way back in 1870. I'm not sure that ASL was even developed by then but she did attend the Belleville School for the Deaf in Belleville, Ontario which must have been pretty amazing for a farm girl to have an education like that. She was always a part of things and she loved music and dancing. I wish I had known her but she died many years before I was born. Imagine what she could have been if she were growing up now.
I'm so confused why anyone would criticize. It's none of our business. Some people greet each other with a secret hand shake or a certain phrase only for them. Don't explain yourselves just ignore the stupidity. Not worth the energy ❤

Your family is a blessing. I think it’s WONDERFUL your family took the time to go and learn how to sign. My mother is deaf and she was sent away to deaf school to live in the 60’s from the age of 5 to 18 she only was at her home during summers and her parents didn’t sign. They tried as much as they could but back then being deaf wasn’t (like you said) something they could google. I’m hearing and I learned to sign before I probably could talk. I understand all of your family’s signing. 💗💗💗
Who cares what the critics think? Your dad loves you very much, we can all see that in the way he looks at you and in his over the top signing. It's adorable and heartwarming, and quite frankly, we should all wish to have that sort of energy and devotion in our own families. Such a lovely family..God bless you all.
Your dad is the cutest!! I think it is so wonderful how he communicates so well with you. It is clear that he is a beautiful person and that he loves you very much!
I like the way your dad signs because it's easier for me to understand since its a little slower (still really fast though) and he says the words in the order he signs. I think it is helpful for me as a new ASL learner to recognize individual words that way. I know it's not perhaps "the right" way and that is fine with me. But also I think that communicating and understanding each other is way more important than signing perfectly. I would love to be able to sign at his level, so fast, and able to communicate with a deaf person so that they can understand me. Also I love these interview interaction videos because it helps me to see what signing looks like in every day life. Everytime I watch one of these videos I feel I learn so much about ASL communication and different words. It reminds me of talking to my grandfather in Spanish. Spanish is not my first language so my spanish is very broken and sometimes I mix up the order of words and tenses but at the end of the day my grandparents understand what I am trying to say and we can have a good conversation. I try with Spanish and they try with English sometimes. It's about meeting in the middle and most important thing is making that connection with someone which I definitely think you can do regardless of how fluent one person is versus the other. Also I am a believer as well and the way you guys conduct yourselves and respond to criticism with grace is a great encouragement. Thank you!

I'm slowly losing my hearing. A couple of years ago, my wife and I started taking ASL with a wonderful local teacher. Unfortunately, she has moved away, but I am still trying to learn. It is so wonderful that your family, including your brother-in-law, have made such a great effort to learn ASL and to include you in all parts of their lives. Like your Mom, your first language may not be English, but you are a success and happy. If I lose my hearing, I intend to go on enjoying life... it will be different, but not better or worse. This video touch my hearth I can't imagine parents avoiding to learn something new to comunicate with their babies... In my case I'm still learning due to my job I realize I need to learn I work for TSA in Puerto Rico and I realize there where may families going to the screening process without anyone helping them. 😔

Thanks for being so encouraging. Learning any new language is a challenge...of course it is! But trying is the key so criticizing people who make mistakes is just ignorant! TH-cam can really be a place that people anonymously criticize...who cares what they think! Don’t take it to heart...that’s their own negativity they’re trying to spread. Your dad is so cool for doing his best to sign. My parents are immigrants and even though they lived amongst English speaking people for over 30 decades, they're also not super "fluent" in English. Criticizers really don't understand how different it is for some to learn a whole language without classes and daily practice with a teacher. You guys are so awesome and I hope to be able to get better at signing. 😊
