    A good way to prevent algae growth in the water is to cover the jar with aluminum foil after you start to see new root growth before your water starts to turn algae green.

      Or add Sea Monkeys. They eat algae.

  • @ibrokeowen
    @ibrokeowen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +44

    I would definitely let the roots occur naturally in plain water, than by the 5-7th day add the fertilizer giving the roots a chance of growing naturally the fertilizer will add a boost, + delaying the process more will hopefully stunt the growth of the algae.

    With having fish as well, I have seen pothos grow like crazy with its roots only in the fish tank. Fish water is basically a dilute fertilizer, so maybe it makes sense. Either way, I love these side by side experiments!

      Not sure if that's possible, fertilizers are compounds so they don't change up the pH too much or become reactive to the environment. You put pure potassium on water and it'll light on fire.

      @@bobrobertsNotUrBob you’re probably using potassium nitrate, which is a common fertilizer. They are talking about potassium metal, which is pure potassium. Potassium (K) will displace one of the H’s in water. Water is made of 2 H’s and an O. Water is set up like H-OH. Adding K, like KH-OH will kick out the first H. So it’s now H2 (an H from H-oh and an H from K) and KOH separately. This reaction forms hydrogen gas (the H2) and it creates a lot of energy, and it causes an explosion.

    Great Experiment! Would love to see somehting challenging like sphagnum moss(but it would take months). I find it even more challenging than carnivorous plants because it grows slowly enough that its easy to overfertilize, but without some fertilizer it eventually turns pale, spindly and wanes away.

    Personally,the clones I have went directly into dirt,and it was premium potting mix with fertilizer added.and I have had complete success so far,with all clones surviving and producing roots.and thinking on it,only thing that I can say is the main reason this worked is those roots had like this video, nutrients to help produce roots,moisture and also the air I mentioned from the airated soil.i really think the right combination of those three things is key to cloneing plants,even if it's useing water as a medium.

    • @TechplantChannel

I have several in each jar and wonder if it would be best to limit them to 3-4 per container. Secondly, what about using a heat mat, beneath the jars, are they beneficial?

    If your going to go to the trouble to get a nute solution to root them in,you may as well toss in an air stone to pump more o2 into the water to turbo charge those roots.i mean the whole idea is to give those plants every possible chance to propagate that we can give them.we know those roots need oxygen and an air pump and air stone is a cheap easy way to get that done,and if they got nutrients to use to grow better,then give em the air to keep up with the additional growth

    Algae growth is an indicator if there's too much nutrients in the water. Probably a minuscule amount of nutrient would do the job.
    I wonder if just adding one macro nutrient would do the job. Like just calcium nitrate. Or potassium sulphate. Probably phosphoric acid would be ideal because phosphorus is the key ingredient for root growth

    If leaf turns yellow shall we remove or just cut.

    • @TechplantChannel
      @TechplantChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the main leaf can turn yellow and eventually it will just fall off because it is no longer needed, you can chop it if you want but i like to wait until it falls off cuz the base comes off with it so no rotting material is left behind. But if you chop it the base part of the leave will rot and could cause issues

    Before propagating the cuttings, do we have to let the wounds heal before placing it in water? I’ve tried 3 times and the bottom always seem to rot.

    don't pick your belly button ,just plant the pothos cutting's straight in its final pot and make sure soil does not dry out or direct sunlight for 3-5 weeks, it never failed by me

  • @lorafrost9628
    @lorafrost9628 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a big difference between straight water and fertilized water. I'm nervous about adding fertilizer because I'm afraid of burning the roots, but maybe just diluting it more is the answer. Also, I've been told that if you root a pothos plant in with your other plant cuttings, that the pothos will actually secrete a hormone into the water that boosts root growth on the other cuttings. Have you tried this before? Currently I have a pothos cutting in with a monstera cutting and it seems to be rooting fast -- but I don't have a control monstera to compare to lol

    • @thewittyusername
      @thewittyusername 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That seems counter intuitive to how most plants work. If their roots produce any hormones the purpose is to suppress competition. In fact their growth tips produce a hormone that stops side shoots from forming down the vine. The proto growth tips are always there in the node, but are not allowed to develop unless the main tip is lost or is so far down the line that the hormone disipates.
