I’ve been to the Barringer crater, at least six times in the last 50 years. Never paid any attention to how much it cost to get in to see it. It’s the best preserved impact crater in the world, and easily accessible from an interstate highway. In 1971, my first time there, my younger brother, and I hiked all the way to the bottom (they let you do that back then). Didn’t see any “wreckage” of an airplane. The stuff you’re seeing at the bottom, was base of the drilling platform Barringer drilled with 100 years ago.
The crater was not proven to be of impact origin until the early 1960s, by geologist Eugene Schumaker. Before that, through the 1950s, the competing thought amongst geologist was it was of volcanic origin. There are many volcanic features in the surrounding area, including San Francisco Peak near Flagstaff, that’s actually a big volcano. The crater you mention in Nevada, is NOT impact origin.
I wouldn’t be too concerned with the price to get in. If you have any interest in science, you’re getting to see one of the wonders of the world. It’s well maintained, and keeps the riff raff out. I’ve paid a lot more, to see a lot less in my lifetime.
People spend their time and fuel, and are scared off by entrance fees. Tou rist, or not tou rist. That is the question.

I got to see it as a kid several times in the early-mid 90s. I swear it was only like 3-4$ for kids and 7-10$ for adults back then. I was absolutely floored to hear its now 29$.
But the $29 is a lifetime fee.....so The Hussy could visit the hole in the ground again and again...except, she didn't read the fine print and threw the ticket away.

4 of us on vacation circa '03, we drove hours to get there and left after we found out it was $29. At least its still $29.

It's well worth the price. You spend way more than that just driving. It has a nice museum and tour included in it. You don't see a meteor crater every day.
I've been there a few times and the weather is always an issue. Once it was so windy that people were getting blown over, hats went flying, kids were crying - it was something to experience! The science museum is really interesting, but, you know, just down the way is Winslow where you can stand on the corner, see a flat-bed Ford slowing down to take a look at me ... for free!
It was $19 about 20 years ago when I was there. Viva la Capitalism! The impact was so large that large boulders and rocks flew out and into the air, landing nearby making many smaller satellite craters that still exist around the main crater today. There were the remnants of a mining operation in the lowest part of the valley at that time...As I recall, there were some diamonds found in the impact area created from the pressure and the heat of the impact. The diamonds ran out and the tourists began to come...The rest is history! Thanks WH! 😎

That's probably because it was the 70's...and you forgot.
It was free, and had a giant yellow tee-pee gift shop closer to the highway with a painted wall you could stick your face thru for a tourist 'photo'.
It was free and I went several times. The tourist trap was right by the highway.
I was also there in the early 70’s and I don’t remember paying anything either. I do remember the wind blowing straight up out of the crater hole. Straight up ⬆️

The astronaut figure in the bottom is to give you perspective on how big the crater is.
That's not a plane crash site, it's the remains of one of his mining attempts. As is the mine opening opposite the welcome center.

On August 8, 1964, two commercial pilots in a Cessna 150 flew low over the crater. After crossing the rim, they could not maintain level flight. The pilot attempted to circle in the crater to climb over the rim. During the attempted climb out, the aircraft stalled, crashed, and caught fire.
I just read about that! Didn't know it when I visited. Unfortunately I didnt go down to the bottom because the nutter I was with was a sob. Somebody said it great to see.
In August 1984 I flew a Piper Cherokee below the rim and got out with no problems.
I don't know how I missed that at the time. My family and I had visited the crater only 6 weeks before the crash!

I stopped there on the way home from visiting friends in southern California in the summer of either 1988 or 1989. The visitor center was closed, as it was early in the morning, so I walked around the entire rim of the crater.
We enjoyed our visit to meteor crater. Very interesting.

Hi WH, if you want to see 100 miles of billboards advertising a business, you should go to So. Dakota and drive I-80 and you will WANT to stop at Wall Drug in Wall, SD. Then continue on I-80 and go to Mitchell, SD and visit the Corn Palace (this is where we bought you sun glasses)

It was about $19 when I stopped there in 2012. It's something everyone should see at least once; ditto for the nearby Petrified Forest NP.

Kinda cool how the meteor JUST missed the visitor center . I'm a Vet, so I only have to pay $20 to get in! It could be worse, though; the costs to get into the Grand Canyon are the same and HIGHER! National Park (North and South rims) entrance fees - $30 per vehicle. West Rim entrance package - $46.65 per person. Helicopter tours - South Rim - $199 per person.
A. the Grand Canyon is bigger - by far. B. your entry fee is good for 7 days and C. the car gets in with the whole family/friends. By the way, you can drive out, pick up more family/friends and drive back in.

I have the handicap access pass for the national park service 5star highly recommend. I think it’s a $10 processing fee then free admission to all national parks from now onDid the north rim of the canyon last year, completely different vibe from south rim I think one tenth of the visitors and essentially the same distance from Vegas.

Back in (1963) when I visited this crater with my family, there were dirt trails to walk on that went to the bottom. Being the middle of Summer with hot temps, I chose to opt out. I was 8 years old anyway. But I still have black and white photos of the visit. Weirdly though, back then there was a gigantic sign in the center on the bottom with a circular target printed on it. Target practice for the Kennedy shooters? Who knows? P.S. As a kid, the most fascinating thing in the museum for me, was the gem stones behind glass illuminated by a black light! I hope it's still there.

You never cease to entertain
I have Hopi relatives in Winslow so on my visits when we bring newbies we'll stop at the crater, but we'll take the little free tour they give that takes you outside the building along the rim a ways. its a fun and informative little tour. The last time I visited it was only $25 each person, that was barely over a year ago. I also remember as a kid in the late 70's before it was all upgraded with all the new structures you could dig around the rim of the crater and find fossilized aquatic sea snail shells.
We’re all suckers too we just got you paid. It was worth every advertisement I had to watch. Lol

In the 1800s all the know-it-all university professors said the crater was caused by a volcanic explosion. Bar-ringer took one look at it a said the crater was from a meteor impact.
It took about 30 years for the professors to agree that the crater was caused by a space rock.

The "meteor" is the bright glow of the material coming through the atmosphere. Once it lands on the earth, the surviving material is called a "meteorite."
What's amazing is how close the meteor came to wiping out the visitor center...

As a Dane we found out that "we" have a much larger Crater below the Ice on Greenland (Danish Territory! Even if that horrible person tried to buy it!). Also in neighboring Sweden they have found remnants of Craters from ancient times! Finn. Denmark

Its worth every dime to see where they filmed parts of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"....Sunset Crater in Arizona....my wife and i visited it why driving from Camp Pendleton in San Diego to Parris Island in SC back in 1986....i still have a Crater Rock

Starman was filmed here in 1984, awesome movie. CE3K was filmed in Wyoming as well as other locations, but not in AZ.

Well, darn. I drove through there last year and didn't stop at this site. I went instead to the OTHER sight-to-see in Winslow, Arizona. Which I HIGHLY recommend. The most famous street corner of rock music. And it has a FABULOUS gift shop nearby ...
Wonderhussy, I’m a big fan of yours and was excited to see you visit the meteor crater. It’s an amazing sight to see. Too bad you spent so much time whining about the $29. It is what it is. The Barringer family or someone invested a lot of dollars in that visitor center and the maintenance of the roads and facilities, etc. I don’t begrudge them making money on their investment. It probably isn’t easy to get people to work out there in the middle of nowhere either. Forget the $29. It’s worth every penny.

There is a place in Oregon called Hole-in-the-ground. There is no fee to see it, but it wasn't caused by a meteorite but hot spring explosion (or something like that).
Kind of like Ubehebe Crater in Death Valley - where she lives

I was just there with my teens, and the weather was pretty bad, but we loved the tour...
Cool crater! On my US roadtrip I went to the "Lunar Crater" in Nevada very early in the morning (ssst, I know it is from volcanic activity and not a meteorite). It was a 20 min offroad drive and so worth it to witness the sunrise. It was priceless, and yet... free :D Belgian chocolatey regards!

I took my son to see the Crater, when he was 14 ... about 29 years ago. At that time, I think the cost was $17 for an adult, and $13 for a person under 16 ... so $30. But I think we went mid week, and including us, there were about 10 people there. Also, they only had I think 2 viewing platforms, not having the highest platform, which gives a much better perspective. As an added thought. I too am frugal, I've oft been told, "I pinch a nickel till the buffalo shits!" .... But you got a little obsessed about paying $29.00. I don't know what the fee to visit the Grand Canyon is ... but it costs you ... and as of 2024, you can't pay cash to do it either. Our Gov'ment, doesn't want cash, credit or debit only!
Really like your videos. I was there many years ago. Don't remember if there was admission price. Pretty cool to see. Wasn't much there. Dirt trails, no docents or tours maybe a gift shop. I'm glad you did like the place. $29?, seems a bit pricey. You always keep your videos interesting. We saw it when we helped out daughter move to Flagstaff for school. It is well worth the fee. It's not just a hole in the ground. There is a museum a guided tour and a very nice visitors center. $29 dollars is cheap for that much entertainment and education these days. They have to keep the lights on maintain the center and parking area and pay the employees.
Exactly. I really don't get why she kept going on and on about the price, as though it is all profit for the owners. At least everyone pays for it voluntarily, unlike all the so-called "free" government stuff.

Besides the cost of the improvements, facilities, safe and secure walkways, building construction, think of the cost of insurance to allow the public on such unique private property. Is $29 making them rich?

I was there in ‘65. There was a trail around the rim visitors could walk.
Closed down after a college boy fell in the crater and his parents sued the company...Close the trail or give us a million dollars.
The last time I visited the crater it was free and I hiked to the bottom of the crater and was not impressed by the rusty remains. That was over fifty yeas ago.
Me too late 1990s, science museum, deck everything looks the same really. Maybe they only charged a fee for the museum. Anyway its going to a good cause- The original Barringer Fam trust maintain this open to the public and provide ed grants to students & research.
i hiked down to the bottom around 1960. It's more impressive from the bottom. That hole was created in a flash of plasma in seconds.

We visited There back in 60s my brother and .myself and sisters climbed down to the center there were drilled holes back then and that crashed plane was there. Still pretty impressive when think how much dirt got moved instantly.
I've wanted to stop there since before I 40 went through and took over 66's territory.

It looked like besides the hole in the ground there's been a couple million dollars spent on infrastructure. That concrete trail with handrails to the highest point, where you shot the fantastic panoramic view from, wasn't cheap or easy to build way out there. Several other steel and concrete look-out platforms and trails with handrails are there, too. It looks like I may make it there, yet.
Don't forget the paved road and parking lot, air conditioning, and restrooms. Also the elevator; some of us are older now and no longer able to trek through the desert and clamber to the rim.
Thank you, Sarah Jane now I don’t have to work out $100 for my family. It’s not worth it pretty cool but not worth it.

There are very few things you can see that you remember for your whole life. This is one of them. If you are already in the area, it is worth it!
Thanks for sharing your crater visit.👍 My wife and I were there in 2014, but it was after 5pm, so the big hole in the ground was "closed". We were on bit of a tightly scheduled 2000+ mile road trip that ended with a flight from LA back to England, so we missed it.🙁

Love your take on this. I went last year and took a guided tour with an employee. There is more to the story. Like "The rest of the story". I paid my fee and got a history of the place. Sorry that that tour wasn't available when you were there. Some interesting fact is that the family ranches the the area with cattle. Also there is a big "to-do" about how the crater was created when he bought the place and tried to verify his theory on how it was made. 👍👍💗

My experience is, it's a tourist trap. It just pales in comparison to the truly spectacular scenery in Arizona, like Sedona, Saguaro, and the Grand Canyon.

I assume when it was free to visit there was not a visitor center/giftshop and the stairs leading to the high point and to the bottom.

I went to Meteor Crater in my teens (1960s) but I have no recollection of a ticket cost. I have the feeling that people don't go down to the bottom anymore, but I did. They had a bunch of rocks or cinder blocks down there, and I spelled out "Hi Mom!". Climbing down and up again was not easy. I lost an instamatic camera on the way down.
There was an explanation for why they didn't immediately find the meteor. They assumed, round crater, must be in the center, otherwise it would be oval. Later, somebody did some experiments shooting a gun into mud. It turned out no matter how acute the angle of approach it always left a round hole! And sure enough, the meteor wasn't in the crater, it was a significant distance outside it.
