How To Catch Blue Crabs at Night

  • If you live near the coast of New England, you have a major food source in your backyard. Our local waters host many forms of sea life that can be classified as delicacies, and with a little knowledge and determination, you can usually scrounge up a free meal. When the weather heats up in August, my culinary pursuits turn toward Callinectes sapidus, better known as the blue crab. These tasty crustaceans are available in good numbers in the summer months, they’re fun to catch, and they’re even more fun to eat!
    In other parts of the country “crabbing” is a serious pastime, but here in New England it is often overlooked or considered a diversion for kids. But this shouldn’t be the case. Our bays and estuaries are home to millions of blue crabs, which, as far as table fare is concerned, are topped only by lobsters and bay scallops in my book. They’re fun to chase and easy to catch. Cape Cod marks the northernmost reach for these critters, although a few will make appearances in Cape Cod Bay. In the late-summer months they are around in good numbers, and anywhere south of the Cape they are plentiful.
    Explore techniques for catching and preparing Callinectes sapidus, better known as the blue crab.

    We used to crab off the docks at night up in NJ when I was a kid growing up. The marina we had was private so we had the whole place to ourselves. The marina had a cove behind it that fed into some marshlands. The crabs would come in and out of the cove with the tides with the incoming tide being the best. We would walk up and down the docks at night with flashlights and catch them. They swam towards light so we would just guide them in close enough with our flashlights to scoop them up from the dock. No traps as that really wasn't sporting at all. We would catch 100's of them a night. Easily enough to fill a 50 gallon garbage can and that is not counting the ones that were to small to keep. We were catching so many that we didn't know what to do with them so we just threw them right back in after we caught them. We were just having fun catching them.
    It was just really peaceful and quiet out on the river at night while everyone else was asleep. There's a lot of people in NJ so it was great just being able to find such peace and quiet in Northern New Jersey. Those were some of the best times of my life just hanging out with my friends. We'd listen to the Yankees or Met's games, drink YooHoo and crab all night. Not a care in the world.

      Just a heads up! Oysters and crabs both require high quality water; so if there's oysters, that also means there can be crabs!

    You don’t need a license to crab in MA unless you’re using commercial pots!

    • @phw340
      @phw340 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s what I thought too in MA. From what I y set stand you can use anything so long as it’s not a commercial trap. I think 25 per day, 5” minimum. Gonna try this at the vineyard

    I’m just above the range in Nantasket and I know they live in the mud on the beach the seagulls know how to dig them up . I’ve never managed to see a full grown adult . Just the claws the seagulls leave .

      You should keep an eye out next season. They are becoming more common in Cape Cod Bay.

    Mississippi don't need a license to blue crab, no limit on how many you catch, all need to be 5" across and no females with the egg spunge. we crab 3-4 times a week always have 50-60 cleaned and in the freezer.

      In Massachusetts you actually don’t need a license to crab unless you’re using crab pots.... you can only take 25 Blues or 50 edible crab in total daily.
