You can always tell a great lesson when you learn something new, the instructions are clear, the voice tone is mellow and easy on the ears, and you can't wait to get off ya stool and grab your guitar!
I'm a decent lead guitarist, but I've always had ridiculous trouble with slide. The whole L-shape concept makes things about a hundred times easier, best slide instructional I've seen!
Nice Lesson thanks Matt. However for some who might be new to open tunings, you called the tuning a bit wrong. You tuning is DADF#AD but you called it as DADF#BA. Thanks for the lesson though, the L sahpe is very useful.
This was awesome! I took lessons from Matt for years in upstate ny - he was the best teacher I ever had, it was great to have another lesson with him after all these years!
I dig Matt the most of anyone I learned guitar from. Early blues guitar, later on Chop Shop for guitar and a few others. Matt is one class act. Thanks for the slide lesson Matt.
Hi, just followed your video and really enjoyed it! Your attitude in teaching is high. When you're saying "play following your ears and not your eyes and don't be scared" that's the bluesiest remark i've ever heard on you tube guitar channels!
You need to update the video since the last 2 strings you called the tuning on are not correct. The second string is not tuned down to B it is at B it is tuned down to A and the E is tuned down to D.
I've been starting to read up and watch tutorials on slide guitar. You have hands down the best tutorial and easiest guy to follow I've seen yet! Great video & great playing!
Mr. Smith - You're the man... such a great player and a caring and teacher with much knowledge. A rare combination indeed. Please keep up the good work!
Great video delivered with confidence and wit from a guy who knows his stuff. One small slip that could cause confusion, as DENSAYO says, D major tuning should be D (6th string) A, D, Fsharp, A, D (1st string)
Sumthin bout that open D ..... Awesome lesson bro !!!! That thumb running the bass line while finger pic’n in time ain’t easy!!!!! Thank You !! my slide journey begins !!!
Love the vid, just bought a slide and you're really helping me along, can't wait for the nice weather when I can sit outside playing guitar and drinking whiskey.
Very good video! I can't wait to get my guitar so I can start to learn to play. I will be referring to your videos when I progress to the slide. At 53 years old I think it's time to learn to stop working so much and enjoy my 1st love, music.
I've been playing guitar for 45 years and my slide guitar never sounded "quite right" to me. I just assumed vibrato went above and below the note. After listening to your advice to not go higher than the note....freaking genius. I've been playing every slide song I know all day....much joy. Slide is so easy to play most people (even non guitar players) can pick it right up and get "something" out of it. Even if it sounds like a cat in heat. But there are a lot of subtle "little things" that make all the difference. Thank you for this lesson....awesome.
You are so pleasant to listen too. Bam! You got my attention. You are an awesome teacher. Thanx brother. I'm 58 and always wanted to play slide. You have given me hope. I appreciate that.
The blues is in your voice, listen for yourself. Thank you for this 2 part video. Its really going to help me. You are so amazing.. thx u again. I wish you were my teacher.
Mr. Smith, I feel honored to have found you sir. I also get the feeling that you are alot more famos than your letting on. Thank you for your wisdom and honest simplicity that can be easily comprehended and easily applied. I have always had a problem comprehending but it was easy with you thanks.
Just found this. I had seen Sonny Landreth and was inspired to try slide....again. I search and found Matts video. The BEST guitar instruction I have seen on the net. Just great stuff that is for players. Thank you Matt! I can fake some slide at last!
Thanks Matt! 2 questions - 1. Do you abandon the 4th string (D) as a base note while playing slide? I cut my metal slide down so i could alternate between both the 6th and 4th strings with my thumb, but the resonance of the slide is significantly decreased. 2. What kind of slide are you using and where can I get one?
By the way i like to play rock from classic rock until heavy metal, and Grunge. I really got impressed how Jimmy Page plays the Slide on the awesome song called " In My time of dying" ! wow! My favorite one! Also " When the levee breaks" and " Traveling Riverside Blues". But i wanna play it in standard tuning, so for the moment to play in standard tuning i play the 4Th, 3th and 2nd strings which are D, G, B. Which are the same notes in Open G tuning which the only difference are that the 6th strings goes from E to D, the 5th string goes from A to G and the 1st string goes from E to D. I just have one classic guitar and i use D'Addario Pro Arte Nylon Corte for classic guitar Hard tension EJ46 Silverplated Wound. One question! Which tensión do you recomend me to play using the Slide and to change the tuning from standard tuning to Open G or Open De or Open A, etc... Without breaking or damage My strings and the guitar itself? Should i use hard tension or medium tensión? Thank you for your time and i Will really apreciate if You answer me that question asap because i'm gonna get new strings.
I just bought a slide to try out for the first time.... This video caught my eye because of the beautiful Ovation acoustic he is playing. Thank you for the lesson!
What a killer lesson. Thank you SO much. I just took my old Alvarez, the guitar I learned how to play on 13 years ago, and set it up to be a slide guitar. I've developed a pretty keen ear over the years, so putting a touch of method behind my ear...like in this video...wow. Thank you!!!
Dude!! I love you man! lol thanks for posting this...I watched it twice and now I can play with a slide thanks to your simple instructions. Oh it might take me a few more vids to be as good as you, haha, but I'm having fun with it. Thanks Matt!
Thanks Matt very cool stuff. It helped alot! Im just learning slide guitar and Im fasinated by it. Currently Im using a Epiphone LesPaul but I'd like to find something more suited to slide guitar. Do you or anyone else on here have any advise or imput on what you use and what I might want to be looking for when purchasing a guitar?
AWESOME VIDEO MATT!! Just picked up a guitar for the first time since school (I'm a piper) so all good!! Does anyone have the tab for this and any other like it?
hi matt smith,is your ovation guitar set up for the slide higher string height or can you still finger pick it?what model is it ?i was looking at Resonator Guitar.yours sounds alot better.love your videos
Very helpful!
--Keep the slide parallel
--L-shaped movements
--Vibrato only up to the note, not above it
All these were great to hear!
I learned more about playing slide guitar from these two videos than from all the other instructors I tried to learn from. Well done, Matt.
Best 7 minutes of guitar lesson I've ever had.
Absolutely
"You have infinite possibilities for being out of tune" I like this guy
wow, this might be the best guitar lesson I have ever seen, very knowledgeable and simple. I can't ask for more, thank you.
You can always tell a great lesson when you learn something new, the instructions are clear, the voice tone is mellow and easy on the ears, and you can't wait to get off ya stool and grab your guitar!

Great video indeed. I learned a lot :)
You need to update the video since the last 2 strings you called the tuning on are not correct. The second string is not tuned down to B it is at B it is tuned down to A and the E is tuned down to D.

The way you say "cause you gotta love vibrato" is the best!! Matt, you're the big brother I wish I had!!!!
I took several courses with Matt at the National Summer Guitar Workshop back in the 90s. A gifted teacher he is.

"the most human noise you can possibly make with a guitar" -that's beautiful man
Because when you sing you slide into the notes. That's not really his quote I've heard that many times
Drop that F# down half a step and jam out some D minor, also a really fun open tuning. Nice video, thanks.
Excellent Lesson! Thanks! Greetings from Bristow, VA
whats better for acoustic? glass or metal?

awsome. a lot of good info in a short video. do you have to set the strings (action) especially high compared to non-slide playing?
This tutorial is amazing. Thank you so much, Matt and D'Addario!
This is great, I have wanted to learn this style for years thanks Matt.

Maxharddrive64 If you wanna be like Stevie, grab a Fender Strat. If you want more of an old school vibe, can't beat a resonator.
Brilliant teacher. To the point and humorous.
