This was so beautifully articulated! I have a “high” functioning daughter, and so many people comment how “you would never know” (as if it’s a compliment)?! A quote I really love is… “mild autism doesn’t mean they experience autism mildly. It just means you experience it mildly when with them. No one really knows how hard they have worked to get to where they are now” ♥️

Yes!! I also have a daughter that people say the same things and actually have friends that have said I could “cure her”…ugh

This was very informative. My ASD seems similar in alot of ways. Diagnosed at 55. I do live alone but in a chaotic mess ! Terrible with finances too. Frequent under the duvet shut downs ect. Can I ask why you feel you will never live alone?

...it IS a compliment though. It means that your daughters disability is not outwardly apparent.

I was diagnosed with Aspergers two weeks ago at age 25. I believe I would have been diagnosed correctly years before if I hadn't been high functioning in communication skills for an autistic person. I have sensory issues, I need a lot of routines and structure and burn out from every social context. I can compensate a lot because I'm intelligent but it makes me depressed beceause it drains all my energy. I'm definitely not high functioning, I'm HIGH COMPENSATING.

I am much the same and find the depression part is the worst. Normal everyday life exhausts me, but always trying to cope and persevere sucks. High compensating is a good term .

Also: we are often times punished for when we show our struggles. The amount of times my meltdowns where seen as me ,just getting upset about nothing‘ and being met with anger when I don’t function ,the right way‘ made me try my absolute hardest to hide my ,bad‘ days when everything is just too much and I’m just not capable of masking any more

See my brother tell me I can't do that because of my sensory to light and sound. Then goes directly to his Nintendo switch to play video games. Lights and sound. So why to be an ass or because video games help him escape a world where everyone at least in my house does everything for him?.?. I think my older brother is just full of shit and lies about it when he is asked to do one thing.

    • @le_th_

People regularly waste their time telling other what they are or aren't, including people's parents, siblings, other family members, physicians, teachers, therapists and many, many other who perceive themselves as "specialists" or even "experts". That's even more common from behind a keyboard where they can't be held accountable.
Many people don't know what they don't know, and some of those people even have PhD's. Then you have way too many people who are all-or-nothing thinkers, not unlike some on the autistic spectrum, who believe their own subjective experience is the only experience possible.
I'm more surprised when people don't behave that way, and quite pleasantly so.

In these terms I would be considered high functioning and my son would be considered low functioning. I don't like either label because it makes it seem like I'm just a touch autistic, so it's a bit dismissive and makes is seem that I don't need much support. For my son it makes people assume that since he is nonverbal and "low" functioning, he isn't going to amount to much and people pity me. Both are so not true! I appreciate you taking the time to discuss this topic :)

I am self diagnosed, and love your iceberg description. When I tell people; I get the "you don't seem autistic", comments because I am learning that I am a masking expert, and just how much that has led to no one ever noticing despite looking back on my life and asking "How did no one ever notice"? From food texture issues, to the "other girls" asking my 5th grade teacher to tell me to quit following them. I thought we had all been friends since kindergarten. I was wrong. People just dropping out of my life for no reason that I could then see. I am 38 and have never moved out from my Mother! Never really thought to. Apparently thats not quite normal, and when these things were brought to me attention I can kinda see that the majority of people strike out on their own from some in born desire to break free......nope not me. I love your videos. Thank you! They help me!!! 💚💚💚💚

I'm so glad you were able to reference Rain Man without going into detail about every little way his expression of autism doesn't apply to you, or isn't actually real. I thought Dustin Hoffman did an incredible job. Also, a movie is a handy reference point: I've already spent 2 hours watching it, that's 2 hours less explaining that you have to do.

This one made me cry. My biggest fear/anxiety is that my daughter is going to be "low functioning" and it's really helping me break that mindset. She's not verbal like you, BUT she is doing better in things like empathy and eye contact. Her sensory issues are pretty bad, but they don't seem much worse than what you're describing. It's hard, as a mom, to think my child won't be able to go to college, have a boyfriend, have a career, etc. which is everything that went through my mind with her diagnosis because, as you put it, people think Rain Man. These videos are really really helping me get out of a dark place and see what her future may actually be like.

I’m so glad all these videos could help you think of a brighter future for your daughter! She’s amazing and just because she can’t communicate like most doesn’t mean she can’t communicate. She’ll have her own way of doing it. She can do anything she puts her mind to even if it’s not the “cookie cutter” tradition way to do it. May be harder, may take longer, but with support she can do it.

If this gives you any hope, when my son was 9 months old, he was referred to early intervention because he was delayed and our reaching milestones. He did not begin speaking until he was 2 (more like 2.5) years old (besides mama & dada). At 18 months old, he was diagnosed with PDDNOS. My world was shattered.
He even got dropped on his head at an afterschool program when he was 9 and had a traumatic brain injury and survived a subdermal hermatoma. This caused him to regress a little bit for a year or so, but it’s not over yet……
Fast forward 12 years, my son has been progressing, although not as fast as peers. The PDDNOS was ruled out when he was 6, and replaced with a diagnosis of apraxia of speech. He is still delayed in all areas, but with services, moving forward.
Now, my son is almost 15 years old. Although communication is his weakness, he is in college level math and is a high honor straight A student. He flapped his hands when he ran when he was little, was extremely introverted and quiet and would run in circles. Best of all, he is the most kindest and genuinely sweet human I have ever met in my life. He is not arrogant or selfish at all.
The progress we have seen over the past 13 years is living proof that those with “learning disabilities” can prevail and be successful thriving human beings and what may be a weakness to some is a strength to others. Many of these kids are “gifted” and have “exceptional” abilities in other areas they are passionate about….like my son is a math genius and I need to use a calculator!! I can speak publicly, and that is his weakness….we are all different. In time you will see that she will grow and progress and you will discover what her hidden abilities are ❤

Up until my daughter's dx I was labelled an overly-anxious parent for suggesting she might be autistic. Up until the day before her dx I had actual Doctors telling me she couldn't be autistic because she could smile & give eye contact. I didn't dare mention that I might be autistic. Then when she got her diagnosis well-meaning folk were sorry for her & me but assured us it must be just a 'mild' case because she seems so 'normal'.
Thankfully, school understood the level of my daughter's support needs & how I had to step in to be her Executive Function & how when she said 'Yes, I know what I'm supposed to do' she was still processing what she was told & actually had no idea what she was supposed to be doing. They began to see when she was masking & how her learning needed to be greatly adapted so she could retain what she was being taught.
She's now in a special secondary school & just yesterday a neighbour was shocked & saddened to hear that was the case. I told them how great she is now doing with the help she needs but they seemed confused as to why she needed it because they thought "She was normal." I began to explain her sensory needs and her dyscalculia but just wrapped it up with a "I'm very proud of her," because I couldn't join in with this acquaintance's mourning. It left me feeling sad that my daughter was first overestimated & then underestimated in the space of five minutes.
When I tell people about my autism, they tend to laugh it off. Believe me, once they get to know me & my idiosyncrasies they need no convincing LOL. Love your content. Your videos are a brilliant resource I can point people in the direction of.

Thanks for sharing. I’m recently finding out I have “high functioning” autism. I’ve always been OCD, but I kept feeling like there was another component of my struggles that wasn’t ocd, as I had that managed with medication. I’ve struggled so much with social situations & anxiety about abandonment bc deep down I feel similar, that I couldn’t function on my own. It’s surprising to receive this diagnosis but also really validating. I struggled severely with social anxiety especially during high school. It helps to know my autism wasn’t a weakness or flaw that I couldn’t correct intellectually thru managing my behavior but rather something in my brain functioning. I would love to see a video on partner support for autism, and how they support and help with “low functioning” struggles. I know mine has taken a toll on former partners but my husband is really supportive and understanding

@@PaperCraneOfHope hi! I noticed extreme anxiety when she was a baby. She wouldn't let anyone hold her or hardly touch her except me. Even my husband she would fuss with a lot. She was an early talker,at 15 months she was screened and they said she had the vocabulary of a 3 year old. She has a high IQ and would hyper focus on puzzles and having everything a specific way. (She was also diagnosed with OCD) she always would scream when the routine would change, for example bedtime,if we did something in the "wrong"order,it would be a huge meltdown. Many people in our lives thought she just needed more discipline but I knew there was something going on and I was persistent to get answers so I could get her the help she needed.she spoke well and early but she didn't speak to other people. She still struggles with that but doing better. She is also on medication for the OCD and that has helped. Other signs I saw, toe walking, not being able to regulate her emotions, many things had to be repeated the same, and she would repeat,if it got messed up she would start from the beginning. She also has very sensitive ears, sounds make her stressed and so do smells. People get offended by her bluntness sometimes because she will blurt out if something smells and it really does bother her so much she will cry sometimes.textures and clothing bother her,but she has gotten better with that as she got older (8years old now) As she has gotten older she has been able to handle some things a little better. She used to hide under tables in public if someone tried to look at her or talk to her or scream at them. Now she doesn't do that as much. @alxndramarie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I see no one has replied to you so I figured I’d offer some thoughts. For starters, I am not diagnosed autistic but am currently working with a psychiatrist because I believe I am. I was diagnosed with ADHD early last year and believe I have both after seeing some of my issues not really covered in ADHD but rather in autism and vice versa. So some of my issues may be more ADHD but hopefully worth mentioning and considering for you and your son.
I am 32 and have always lived with someone up until a few months ago when my partner and I separated. Living alone is extremely hard. One thing I’ve realized that has helped me stay “on track” often is body doubling. Knowing when to go to bed and get up, eat, shower, and even use the bathroom is easier when you see someone else doing it or needing it first. I didn’t know I had these issues as severely until I lived alone. You latch on to that behavior and the pressure from someone else can be needed. My time blindness makes me lose an entire day in a flash and I haven’t done anything at all or, I’ve hyper focused on something and haven’t eaten or done any house chores. I am currently so behind on house chores and my problems with organizing and prioritizing tasks makes it difficult to start things and I often get paralysis where I can’t get off the bed/couch/chair. And even when I do make good strides, completion rate is extremely low. Grocery shopping is way too overwhelming with the sensory overload of the store and then factoring in people and then to make decisions on what to eat and when and what I need and don’t need. I am exhausted all the time and can’t share simple responsibilities or tasks with anyone else and then they don’t get done. I almost always have dishes in the sink and it becomes a real problem because my sensory issues mean I can’t touch them or hear the sliminess of cleaning them and I’m faced with a physically and emotionally exhausting time to compete a simple stack of dishes or, to throw the dish/Tupperware away. My need to absorb myself in all my interests means I have over accumulated items that I really don’t “need” but I can’t get rid of them. My love of bridge burning or being a hermit means I’m left to my own devices and make poor decisions. The last point I’ll make even though I could make many more, is that my exhaustion levels are so intense that I cannot work full time and so my potential for income unless I run my own business is limited and rent is costly. To sum up a lot of it, what a neurotypical does would take me 3-10 fold the amount of time and I am only one person.
Now, all that is to name a few of my struggles but I’d like to offer help. We are fortunate to continue to grow in technology and available services. In terms of planning for the future and what would help me would be taking advantage of services to make life easier. Having a meal delivery service would be helpful if I could afford it but for now I at least get my groceries delivered. I am trying to increase my income to afford to hire a house cleaner bi-weekly if possible to take that off my plate. Their 3 hours of cleaning would probably take me 3 weeks to accomplish. I have hue lightbulbs on every light so I can adjust the light levels and colors when needed and they don’t make a noise I can hear which other lightbulbs can do and it affects me. I am overhauling my apartment to better suit designated areas for various tasks and interests to hopefully help keep me in focus and organized. I have a dog and I have adapted to using the restroom when she needs to. She must know I need a push because she for whatever reason does not eat unless I am eating. My concern for her means I get food and we both eat. She also helps me with sleeping issues (time for bed and less anxiety at bedtime). She also needs meds and so we take ours at the same time. I really think pets or having a dependent can be helpful as they have their own schedule and somehow it’s easier to help someone with their needs than your own.
I’m not sure Olivia’s needs that may limit her from living alone but what I can say is it’s extremely hard to do, but there are definitely options too. Hopefully there are some for your son that can help him if he eventually would like to live alone and if not, there are options for roommates or professionals! I recently saw some postings in my area for various jobs as basically a roommate for someone with autism that will also help with meals, meds, and accountability. I never heard this before but may be worth some research to see how that process works!
Best of luck to you and your son and hopefully I was able to help a little. 🤍

I've been a sighted guide for the blind through Rose Resnick. We go on very basic walks to 4 hr difficult nature hikes. One day we were on mass transit and one of the hikers, who I was using as a asst. guide (because his vision type is tunnel vision without the abilty to see the ground at his feet without looking down.) to help with the group of 10 or 15. Someone said at him more than to him, "You're not blind!" Yeah it's annoying but after a while we'd just bust up laughing each time we heard it. A lot of people think blindness is 100% blackness when 20/200 vision to total blindness is the spectrum. You explain it when you can or just laugh about it when you can't. There are two people, oxygen burned eyes at birth, that can go arm in arm and cane on the outside arm but go at a pace that would wear non seasoned hikers out. So even the saying "The blind leading the blind" isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I was just a late bloomer, she says... But, I'm 43 now, and I am so close to giving up. I have no friends, no one aside from my mom who can confirm that I don't have a job... That is my problem getting medicaid, The government wants a statement from someone I don't live with that I haven't worked in 5 years. One of the hardest things about our 'iceberg' to use your example means that when it comes to asking for help, people often ask if we really qualify. For a time, i had to use public transit which required tickets for each ride. I felt guilty getting the disabled price because "you don't look disabled." The emotional aspects you can't see are often my worst.

BUT I would like to also add that is Autistics who COULD live on their own (if they could afford to) are also valid!
These videos about functioning labels almost ALWAYS love to throw out there "oh but I could never live on my own! So look I'm not actually high functioning!" It sounds like you're trying to pander to NTs still in this way...
I can't afford to live on my own but if I could I know I would be able to do it. I mean I would lonely but I would be capable.
    I'm still Autistic too.

I was diagnosed a few months ago, I kind of knew for years. I've always been "different", I have a bad habit of saying the word "maybe" so much it's like a filler for me. I don't know why I love saying "maybe" so much, but I say "maybe" so much that it's almost like a personality trait of mine. It would be cool if I met a boy who finds it attractive when girls say the word "maybe". I have a high IQ but I only did merely above average in school. I'm 22 but still consider myself a kid in a very literal sense (I still see adults as authority figures and not as my peers, worse yet, I still have no idea what I want to be when I grow up). I've always been a very happy person and I smiled so much when I was younger that my face stayed that way (I'm glad it did but there are drawbacks), as in it's actually uncomfortable for me to close my mouth and _not_ smile. I usually am smiling but sometimes I'm not really smiling, it's just my neutral expression. I'm extremely verbose, I love to talk. I talk so much that I don't pause as much to swallow as I should and I can spend long periods of time talking like I have a hot potato in my mouth, the only reason I stop to swallow is because I like being understood. I get obsessive about things I'm fascinated by I attempt to flirt with boys by sharing information about things I'm interested in. I only found out recently that not as many people care about my coloring books as I'd previously thought.

Lots of people get autistic people confused as people with helmets on their heads or banging their heads on the wall.
Autism is so diverse and I have what’s recorded as “level 1”.
People have told me “you’re not autistic”; I even feel nervous about sharing this with others.
Sometimes I am forced to tell people. I’m in a 12 step program and was having a hard time understanding what people were telling me. To their instant judgement, I seem like a “frat boy” or someone who is arrogant but when they get to know me they always are like “I didn’t know you were like that”. So they don’t see what’s really going on and it’s difficult even being as “high-functioning” as I am because it’s easy to perceive me as a shy and nervous person. I can’t tell you how many times people have told me to not care what people think but the truth is I have little problem with that. It’s just that I get real anxious in crowds be due I hear every conversion and can’t make solid eye contact during a conversation.
What really gets on my nerves is people saying “what’s wrong with you” or “you’re weird” or “why do you act that way” etc..
I had to learn to control my anger though.
I’m 27 and consider myself an attractive male.
Lots of women come up to me but end up not being able to handle how awkward I am. They perceive it as me having low confidence.
Idk.. it’s weird but whatever I’ll keep going. 👍

Sometimes he just can’t speak and that is why people don’t or they can’t understand that they can do amazing things.
I think it all starts with being able to communicate, and to tell people what your goals and what your future is like in what you want to do with your life
I mean, if you haven’t even heard of Carla Fleischmann, you should look at her video because she’s severely autistic and she has written a book. She is an advocate for people with autism and other people with special needs.
She’s been on many talk shows, and she even had her own talk show in the past called speechless with Carly Flashman, and it was very very very good. Do you know
And I think she is very very very independent now, and I think she does live on her own to some degree. And that is all because she was able to use the computer to communicate with people you know so she was able to tell them tell people what she wanted and what her hopes are and when do you feel sad and happy?
And what bothers her and what she is happy on about on that day. Everything starts with expressing yourself and learning how to communicate with people.
Because people don’t understand what you want and what your likes and you’re just like sore if you don’t know how to talk to people

I think people think I'm making up the fact that I have AuDHD (because of the things I've done in my life and surface performance) so I'm trying not to tell many people at all.
I tried to explain to some close family today how the world appears to me visually (it's pretty jumbled and hard to describe).
They looked like they thought I was making it up but were also suddenly very concerned that I was about to get in a car and drive.
I can't even afford a diagnosis so it's all really getting too much, I just can't say anything right these days.
Since I've woken up to what's going on with me, I don't have the energy to carry on the complete charade at all times anymore, I can't see how I'm going to survive in all honesty.
This isn't a trauma dump, sorry if it comes out like that, I just have to shout it at the cloud if I can't speak to people about it.

I'm struggling with daily life from years, but I kept going and working on that. I often tell about my problems and my new way to handle it. People around me are seeing my strength, not my struggle. Unfortunately, they compare with me and put me in this spot of doing better than them. Just recently my new collegue with autism say that I'm doing great and he is sad that person with the same problems(he mean autism) is handling life and he isn't. I asked him why he thinks I'm doing great, I never said that. And he say: I can tell because I see that.

And if people don’t really give any sign that and what do you want to do with your life’s.
How do you expect for people to be taught if they don’t say if they don’t know how to say to somebody that they want to do this and that in life?
That is why they created an app for people who can’t speak because it gives them that independence you know, and not ability to use their voices
And that is a very, very very good thing, because it will eventually make more people who are deaf or severely autistic or maybe people with a speech problem be able to go to college and
People won’t think that they’re stupid and they need that support all through their life
They won’t need to have that because they will have a voice, and they will have the ability to know that they have control over their environment and
They can do whatever they want to do with their lives.

  • @leighhoppins9273
    @leighhoppins9273 ปีที่แล้ว

It’s not their fault, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t still learn to communicate
And I think, eventually more and more and more people are going to get these tablets or phones, and they are going to eventually be able to do amazing things in the public
Five or six years from now you know they’re going to be so so so so so much more people with autism going on in the community on their own and living independent or at least semi independent, you know because they are going to have the ability to tell people, how do you feel and what they want, and what they want to do in their future You know
And once they know how to get their voice across, there are no stopping people you know from doing what they want to do with their lives.

I guess I don't understand why getting hung up on the labels is such a big deal. What does being labelled on a spectrum with interleaved high and low traits do for you? Does it mean that you can't get a job or support yourself because you have a mix of "high" vs. "low" traits? Do you need in home care and subsidies because of some of these lower functioning traits? My point is that if you are autistic, but you can support yourself-hold down a job and find your own happiness, why not just roll with that and be happy? The only reason I see making a video like this is to point out that the guidelines for support for high functioning autism is not adequate and needs a different scale so that people can get subsidies in areas that they are struggling. Is that the point you were trying to make?

he love spinning. Car Wheel, Fans, Entertainment Board, Everything in the street spin, he will spend 1 minutes on it.
We try to train him, stop him from that. I have a question....
    1. We want to stop him from this behavior. Because the social think this is abnormal and label them.
    2. But this is his happy moment.
Should we stop him from spinning?

"High functioning" isn't really a matter of self expression for the autistic individual, it's a category used by NT people to describe their experience of you to other NT individuals. The label provides a utility for NT people. In tells them how mindful they need to be of your functioning. NT people have needs too in relating with autistic people. It's not just about you and your experience.

    • @Much0Mang0
      @Much0Mang0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

you should be just as mindful regardless. if you want to know about something specific to an individual you should ask them personally. Everyone has different needs so someone telling you they are 'high functioning' doesnt tell you what needs you do or do not need to be mindful of

I never cared about this label high/low functioning, cause I guess I never saw someone say this in a patronizing way.
What I think when I hear this is:
How functional in society are you despite your difficulties?
Do you have a job and can hold this job?
Can you follow you academic demands?
Did you learn how to make friends if you want to?
I am barelly functional by these standards. I'm probably not autistic though, but I have ADHD for sure.
Anyway, even though you function, the difficulties are still there.

Hey Mrs. Estrada! If your psychiatrists says you have autism, then I'm sure you do. There is no specific test for autism. Each doctor diagnoses in their own way.

I don't think that a speculation from your psychiatrist means you deffinetly have autism. But!!!! She won't just say something like that, there a probably enough reasons why she thinks you might have autism.
Wether you should go for an official diagnosis or not depends on your situation. It's enough to "just" want to know it for sure for yourself! It can be quite annoying never knowing for sure and it could haunt in the back of your head. And another reason to get an official diagnosis can be the need of specific help. For example specialist coaches, help finding work, household coaches, things like that!
Sometimes a diagnosis is not needed. It might be enough for yourself just to acknowledge what your stuggles are, how you are as a person, what's difficult for you and how your brain processes things and the effect that has on you. A psychotherapist can help you with those kind of things.
I recommend that you ask your therapist why she thinks you have autism and if she thinks you should get an official diagnosis. Just to inform a little. You can always see what you'll do after that :)
      Goodluck!

If you want a true written diagnosis you'd need a full assessment. But that is up to you.

You remind me a lot of me.
When you said you were not able to wear certain types of clothing, I immediately thought of gloves.
I can't wear gloves to keep my hands warm.
For some reason, the gloves I wear when cleaning don't do this, but if I try to put on winter gloves of any type of material, it feels like my skin is vibrating on my hands. If I keep them on, my skin begins to tingle. I hate it; especially because as a rock star, I like wearing gloves to add to my look/costuming.
But I can't do it for long, since I have these weird feelings in my hands...

"Who cares ?"..That what my Aspy American wife said to me today when I asked a question... I am sick of the disrespect. It could be a cultural thing ? I could be an Aspy thing ?

So I just got tested for autism and she is saying that I don’t have it. But here are something’s that I did and do now. As a baby I use to bang my head bang on stuff, biting myself and biting my sister . Certain things I picked up on really quick and other things I kind of have to get a feel for before I know what I am doing. I am very picky with food. I don't like my food touching each other. I am very particular on how things had to be situated. If somebody moved my stuff I would know it because even if it was moved just a little bit I would get mad because I knew where I had it. keeping my things organized by size and color. All my stuff had to be separated by size as long as everything was grouped together by color. All my clothes I wear have to be soft. Don't like shoes or socks on my feet. Don't make eye contact with anyone. I can’t do loud sounds or certain lights. And the last thing is I do the hand flapping. I’m going to try to get a second opinion. What do you think I should do?? I’m 21 years old

Why lie if no one believes you when you're telling the truth? 😜 If someone says to me “I would never have known you were autistic.” To me, that statement has kind of a combative nature to it, because I’m now trying to figure out whither their trying to pay me a compliment or call me a Lier. It feels mostly like a challenge for me to defend my statice. But instead think I will ask them, “So what do you think an autistic person looks like?”, Or “What would I need to look like, to look autistic to you?”

The iceberg analogy is perfect for figurative representation because of its simplicity.
A 💡 of inventiveness for this.
