Hyperfocus is super power, I always get the best grades in my class because my brain is able to hyperfocus on anything I do. I am still socially a mess but hyperfocus is cool

I have somewhat mild autism or I can mask really good. But the best thing is my math skills and weird somewhat eidetic memory. I can get As on a college level without learning and ranked 384th nation wide in my age on a weird math test (population of 8 Million). I know one guy who is better than me at math in a school of 1500 students that are already top 10% in terms of education. If I find something interesting I can remeber it for a few years after hearing it only once. I get really good grades after barely paying attention and watching 20-30 mins of yt explanations. I never forget important appointments and never loose things. Even when I‘m fucked up drunk that I can hardly walk (stopped drinking now as I drank to cope) I never lost anything and got home safe. Without the social difficulties I‘d consider it a superpower. The only problem is if I don‘t find a subject interesting it‘s practically impossible to learn. Without making a checklist or having a task to do I just stare at my screen or paper and waste hours sometimes.

Frl I think the hyper focus makes us have a higher IQ tbh . I succeed in almost everything I try to do, and my brain is very good at observation and picking up patterns.

I think this is a great idea for a video! I related the most to the incredible hearing. Most recently, my dad was having 'dishwasher' problems that caused puddles around the dishwasher every few days. He tried everything to fix it and was about to buy a new dishwasher, until I finally went over and it took me about 15 seconds to find the source of the leak by hearing a teeny tiny hissing sound coming from the smallest hole in a hose behind the fridge. He replaced the hose for eight dollars and no more puddles or leaks haha!

Ayeee I love woodworking too! But I love the finish side of it. Learning every type of finish, and weirdly enough (but not that weird if you think about it), it translates to hyperfocusing on nail polish too

My favorite is my love for learning, combined with what feels like a huge amount of storage space for information in my head.
Like last year, it started to bother me that I know very little geography. Within a couple of weeks, I knew all of the countries, capitals, major cities, and many of the landmark features of the world.
I know all of that information now, for no other reason than I wanted to learn it. 💜

Yay! Thank you so much for this! I love being me, and as I age I am learning to see every ‘flaw’ is actually an exciting positive. I am 43 and am unlearning a lot of institutional thinking that was common in my upbringing. My husband delights in my idiosyncrasies and that helps so much. We play together all sorts of silly games daily and it’s wonderful. The freedom to be yourself is magical. Your video has cheered me no end, thanks!

      Hello Oliva.
Let me give you a history of my diagnoses
I was originally diagnosed with ADD at age 8(no not ADHD as I definitely didn't have the hyperactive aspect but still had learning difficulty at school)
It wasn't that I could not concentrate if any thing I had very good concentration but how I learn was different from the other kids
I was better learning 1 on 1 rather than a classroom setting.
Then I was diagnosed with high-functioning autism at age 9
Which made more sense I didn't have attention defect but I had a different way of learning from most people,
I wanted to learn as much as everybody else but unfortunately school is more geared to how neurotypicals think.

  • @celebkiriedhel
    @celebkiriedhel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Fine being alone - the other extra benefit, because we do masking to look neurotypical in public - its a relief not having to mask, and you get to be yourself. And you can enjoy your differences rather than be on alert.

Trait #2 haha yep 😂😅 same here 😅 Apparently since I was little I was like this, and I went undiagnosed until last year. Like when I was four I turned to a lady beside us in line at the store, and I just said, "Wow, you're fatter than my mom," with the most straight and serious face. And my parents were going to say don't say that, but the pregnant lady was nice enough to say, "Yes sweetie, I am bigger than your mom." 😬😅
Oh and another favorite for me is long-term memory. I remember everything that's ever happened to me since I was two 😅
And lastly, I don't always like being dramatic, but because I'm super emotional and dramatic I am one heck of a writer, and now an English major in college 😂😂😅

i used to touch every light that i saw even if i knew they might be really hot, i used to cry at every hand dryer and occasionally have to leave the cinema when the noise got to loud, i would refuse to go places where there was to many people or if it was too loud, i have anxiety and what i do now is go to the washrooms to calmdown. ive got misophonia (just small noises like chewing and nail picking), im not diagnosed with asd, my mom doesnt want me to get tested. i always used to freak out when i had to talk to teachers, i still really dislike speaking to people as i cant keepeye contact and i just feel extremely akward, one time i was called to the office and no joke asked to go to the bathroom 12 times because i couldnt stand looking at them in the eyes and it just got to overwhelming. i constantly pertended to be sick to avoid school and social gatherings like parties at the school gym.
when i was about 10 or 11 my mom accidently left a glass on the stove so it exploded and i ran to my moms bedroom and couldnt calm down for a very long time
I only have 1 close friend and i find it very hard to make them im very quiet, during lockdown it got so bad i couldnt leave the house and i would panick everytime i would have to even go in a small corner store

I cannot sleep if I hear people talking or even music in the distance, so I sleep with a fan. Sometimes the high pitched hum of the lights and the sound of clocks ticking bothers me. I think of most things in "matter of fact" terms. Not good or bad mostly curious looking for patterns. I feel like I live a life in my head that runs in tandem with real life. There I can debate my ideas without judgment about pace or considerations. I hate explaining my motivation. I think the difference between my fantasies and (most) others is that mine are in the realm of attainable by me. I am very "tomboyish" for an old broad. I am mechanically inclined and until recently I did all the repair work on my cars.
Not afraid to get my hands dirty. It's been a good trait to carry me through the lean times of my sporadic feast or famine work history. I call myself an urban artist type. For most of my working life I did as variety of creative work in sort of the industrial side where the artisan often gets dirty so I've been able to get away with unfashonable utilitrian clothes. There is sort of a word of mouth network of people mostly men who gravitate to the lifestyle..
I have a long memory too.
I'm sure my mother was autistic and my brothers were as well. My brothers were especially problematic. OMG, those poor men. Mom was taking it from all sides. She would just sit and go into her head. I wonder when they used to think autism happened due to "frigid mother syndrome" it was due to a spectrum mother just holding it together trying to fix the unfixable in an unkind world.
Then there's the part where I share too much... thanks for understanding.

I relate very much to all this except for the tomboy part, ever since I was a child I have loved and been obsessed with all things girly! but it was always very different from the way my peers were girly. it was never about being trendy, I definitely was never trendy - on the contrary, hyperfeminine vintage fashion is a special interest and my peers thought I was very weird in my thrifted 50s dresses and ribbons and red lipstick 😂

I tend to not get embarrassed, but then get worried that I SHOULD be embarrassed. Only because I don't necessarily want gossip to go around work. If I didn't work there anymore, it wouldn't bother me if people talked about how weird I am. I have done some bold things in the past (brutally burning bridges with people by suddenly leaving Facebook, only telling those who were closest to me that I was planning to close my account). This made a few people angry, and they acted like we weren't friends anymore. I couldn't quite understand why we couldn't still be friends and act friendly just because we aren't Facebook friends. Did I want 360 people private messaging me after making a public announcement about closing my account? Not really. I didn't think that I could handle the overflow of messages, or even entertain the idea of even 50 people wanting to exchange numbers with me, and having to stay in touch with them all. As much as I care about people, it often seems impossible to keep up with them. I can't give them what they need, and so sadly, I try not to become close friends with people so that I don't end up hurting their feelings once they find out that I don't like talking on the phone, or texting for more than half an hour.

So in the end what is the real difference between male and female autism(i ask this as a male autistic with all these traits)?

    • @OliviaHops
      @OliviaHops  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hey Nicolo, in the end, there really isn’t a difference. The difference usually lies with how the traits present themselves in males verses females. But as always, every autistic person is different so some makes can present their traits the way females usually do and vise versa.

I can remember almost every route which I've ever walked or driven and will find the way
...but phone numbers are kind of difficult; think an NT person can usually store 7 digits.

Yep , absolutely same here in everything.
Wonder why I ve always connected with boys better and actually more well than the normal type of girls growing up. Now Ive started to appreciate some women a bit more but still hmm 🤔 😂 and I am over 40 years old. Just to say I got into trouble especially with friends boyfriends all the time and girls too who thought probably i was some sort of bitch or a boyfriend stealer as I had really good connection with the opposite sex without and honestly looking for a boyfriend at all.
Yes Olivia , fair enough it is a spectrum! and don’t forget the upbringing part with family members . To me, Being autistic has only been a trouble with my parents and was verbally and physically abused for not fitting into the family or because I couldn’t follow the rules . Later in life after a big burn out and a a big trauma I found out I was on a spectrum . I wished I had known before about me especially because I was depressed carrying the burden not being loved and bullied by my parents most of my life and failed to be successful because they hated me and I wanted to please them so it hurt a lot .
It happens a lot in people in the autistic spectrum especially my age as parents where very uptight back then. Also throughout early teenage and adulthood this caused me to have some personality disorders again because of my upbringing but this applies to neurotypical people too but more in autism as we are sensitive . This was kind of a gift too to be able to fit everywhere and with everyone as but a curse as it was draining and some time could loose my own sense if I didn’t take enough time for myself to recharge .
But autistic or not, child abuse is not sitting well with me and even as an adult they always tried to break me down . Seeing a shrink now about that . That has affected more my life than being autistic for sure and even now. Working on it …
Working on loving myself again after other abuse and again my parents .
Blessings 💙 I am so happy for you Olivia . You are a light in the community
    Love ❤️

I truly feel that my daughter is autistic, however, teachers don't see anything "wrong." Any suggestions on how or where to start with finding if she is in the spectrum?

If she is under 18 then the first move would be to bring it up to her pediatrician.

Most likely the problem is that schools aren't really educated on autistic women and more so autistic men as autistic men's traits are more obvious than females, females tend to mask, the issue would be solved if autistic females were understood more and received their diagnosis as kids like their male counterparts

    Olivia smiles a lot.
I’m still baffled how anyone can have autism and not know that anything is wrong.
The severely impacted, like I am, also like how we are. I wouldn’t change it if I could.
What do you mean “nobody ever talks about it?” We talk about it all the time.
I’m still kinda perplexed that you have diagnosis of autism and did not know until you were in your twenties.
Know what, you do what you want.
I cannot watch these type videos anymore. They just upset me.
Are you sure your MD gave you the proper diagnosis? Really. To so keen with autism, you seem terribly normal.
