    Hands down the coolest tone on the planet. Nothing beats early surf rock. Dick Dale was something special.

    He's a lefty that learned to play a right handed guitar upside down, but kept it strung like a right handed guitar. When the left handed strat came out, he strung the strings upside down.

    • @yarygork2334

      Thats why he bangs on the low notes with such ease. He doesnt
      "anchor" down his strumming left hand which is very hard to get good at.

      Django Rheindhart had fused fingers due to a childhood fire yet could play jazz chords which feel like your picking your nose with your elbow.

      I'm also one of those oddball guitarists...but it's always baffled me as to why it should be so damn odd? Would have thought that the vast majority of lefties, picking up a guitar for the 1st time, would likely be picking up a standard right-handed guitar, that being far more readily to hand, than a much less likely left-handed guitar just happening to be there waiting for them?
      Anyone ever come across a right hander playing a standard left-handed guitar upside down by the way??

    I've seen Dick for the past 15 years every time I had the chance. This is about as close to an actual "Smoke on the Water" as he would get, meaning that he ALWAYS threw in a bunch of other stuff. Sam Bolle, his bass player, said that he had to watch every second because Dick would go anywhere he wanted, and throw it to Sam for solos at a moment's notice. Wonderful stuff; we have lost a true giant of music!!

    @CanadaRoksEh Me and my symphony played with him in concert. He doesnt use a tuner or piano to tune his strings. He says that he uses the vibrations of the string when he strums it to tune it. He can tune the instrument by the vibration. Freakin amazing haha. He tested each string and after a few minutes, it was perfectly tuned.

    • @radiodiffusionfrancaise1591
      @radiodiffusionfrancaise1591 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      it just takes a decently trained ear to tune a guitar, no tuner required. But you can't do it to a piano fer crissakes. what kind of symphony you got there?

    • @TheEricleegreen
      @TheEricleegreen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@radiodiffusionfrancaise1591 Sure you can tune a guitar to a piano. Hit the e key. Pluck the e string. Anybody with a good ear can tell whether the plucked e string is flat or high compared to the e note played on the piano. Then you can tune the rest of the guitar from there.
      Without something to compare to, I can tell that my guitar is "off", but I'm not good enough to know whether it's flat or high. That's when I clip the tuner on the head -- now. Back in the day, we tuned to some other source, either a tuning fork or some other instrument that didn't go out of tune when you breathed on it.

    • @radiodiffusionfrancaise1591
      @radiodiffusionfrancaise1591 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheEricleegreen this was a year ago so I'll try to reconstruct my thinking. What I mean is that sure, you can generally tune your guitar around a single note on a piano, but due to the mechanical differences between guitars and pianos you will never be perfectly in tune all up and down the keyboard or fretboard (a guitar is pretty much impossible to be in perfect tune to itself, no matter how great the intonation). This is where finger vibrato is your friend. When you get to Classical Indian music or better yet Turkish music with dozens of microtones to the octave, this kind of "tuning" will be woefully inadequate. The ear is the only way to do it. fwiw I still have a tuning fork... somewhere.

    • @TheEricleegreen
      @TheEricleegreen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@radiodiffusionfrancaise1591 My guitars have pretty good intonation. But I don't own cheap acoustic guitars, and my electric guitar has intonation adjusters on the strings. I use an electronic tuner to check my intonation as well as my base tuning and they're generally spot on. If your guitar has bad intonation, you need to have it adjusted by a professional. Easy enough on electrics with fully adjustable bridges, with acoustics it requires changes to the nut and bridge.
      The bigger problem with my guitars is that changes in humidity and temperature change their tuning. Not much to be done about that, it's the nature of a big log of wood with strings providing tension in one direction. Pianos have a more solid framework for the strings since they're not required to be portable, and thus tend to stay in tune better with changes of temperature and humidity. And of course my piano, since I live in a typical urban apartment, stays in perfect tune since it's electronic :).
      Bending notes to where you want them is a core guitar technique. It requires a good ear, but it also requires a base to use that ear against. If you have the base strings of a guitar tuned to a known note when open, it's pretty easy to bend a note to where you want it. Otherwise you're lost.
      The vibrato technique is typically used with violin-family instruments rather than with guitars, at least in the Western tradition. Violins don't have frets, but a good violinist knows where the notes are in general on his instrument and when he's going for a note gets his finger near it, then uses string bending and vibrato to dial in the note and hide the fact that he's dialing in the note. Playing a violin requires a good ear but again depends on the base tuning to be accurate in order for that ear to have a base to work against. This also is why when you have a bunch of violinists in a symphony orchestra they're tuning against each other and the other instruments, they want to insure they all have the same base. The piano, as the one instrument in a symphony orchestra that cannot be easily field-tuned, is usually used as the base because it simply has to be since it can't be changed.

      +gregory andonian I never thought page and clapton were as special as people make them. I mean, don't get me wrong, they're great players-much better than I can ever dream to be-but I still feel like there were better players around in their time that just don't get enough credit. Dick being one of 'em of course.

      Strung with thin strings on top - then down is up. Just a note he explains his percussive style as coming from his Polish-Lebanese folk heritage "It's the pulsation," whether playing the guitar, trumpet, or piano, "they all have that drumming beat I learned by playing the tarabaki." with his uncle playing the oud.

      Jimis were still strung normally. High e on bottom like everyone else. He played a righty guitar upside down but restrung proper.
