When a king passes on, especially in Yoruba kingdoms that lie in the eastern part of Yorubaland, the kings' daughters, usually first daughters are crowned as regents known as Adele in Yoruba, which translates to, the one who holds fort while a king is to be chosen. Women aren't crowned in Yorubaland (there have been few exceptions to this though). The reason for having female regents is so that they won't insist on not relinquishing the throne when the time comes. You put a male regent there, and he might just never want to leave the throne anymore. The female regents are usually barred from getting married if they weren't already married, and if they were, they must leave their husbands and reside in the Palace for the duration of their regency. This interruption in their lives ensures that they are also eager to relinquish the throne and go back to their families, or even get married. Some regencies are so strict that they forbid the regent from having sexual intercourse. It has worked for centuries and I guess it's good practice.
Why not changing the throne from King to the queen so that they will properly ascend to their father's throne. since the female is one next to the throne when the King has passed away. After all, we have some ruling Queen in some places all over the world.
