Great analysis. The one thing I noticed that you never mentioned was that the three suspects are all victims too. The first one ended up dying by the train tracks, literally, like one of the murder victims. The other one was beaten and victimised whilst wearing red underwear, like the victims. The final one was also beaten and victimised with his hands tied behind his back, and the shot of him in the tunnel, hands bound on his stomach, is a mirror of how the first victim was found in the opening scene.
That's exactly what police and other sectors of government back in 50~90s used to do in Korea. They beat confession out of people to get themselves higher up in ranks. Korean national intelligence service also used to do the same thing, accusing random people or someone they didn't like of being "communists" and get confession by means of torture.
Just watched Memories of Murder. For a movie I wasn't really feeling for the first 30-40 minutes, all I can say is, goddamn, what a turnaround. Blew my fuckin mind. Last couple of scenes are gonna stick with me forever.
Me too, its almost like Alien... takes about half the movie to really get anywhere and then just becomes one of the most engrossing things you've ever seen.
In the ending I didn't understand at first but before that I was crying when the scientist couldnt believe his results.it was only until after I saw online about the final scene I researched it and I laughed.
The actual killer confessed in 2019, didn’t he? He even admitted how he was shocked the police didn’t even suspect him one bit. He was even wearing a watch that in a way matched with the crime scene and they overlooked it. It kinda shows how incompetent the polices were. In all of Bong Joon Ho’s movies, he never once has written a police officer that’s good at his job. Probably because of how he views the justice system.

Here's a crazy story. The real culprit was finally caught last November (2020) after 35 years from the first crime. Just like you said, the culprit confirmed that he did watch this movie while in prison for another crime (which was why he didn't get caught). Crazy, right? Really enjoyed your analysis. Would love to hear your take on 'Mother', which is my favorite Bong's film.

I've just realized the last murder disproved the whole direction of the investigation by happening during a dry night, this explains the chief's reaction to the interviewer and adds to the rage of detective Seo
Ehh I see where you're coming from but the reason Detective Seo was so distraught is because he was tracking the suspected murderer and then the final murder happened when he wasn't accounted for, that's why he couldn't believe the DNA evidence was inconclusive and still shot anyway, because he was so distraught he let the suspect go and in his eyes because of this the child he bonded with died
completely agree! The weird thing about this film's reputation is that, despite gaining somewhat of a cult following for the past 15 years or so, and with Bong's Oscar-win, it still feels like the film is very underappreciated, even by those who consider it to be a great film. Although Parasite is great, this one is superior to it, in my opinion.

A slow burner but a fantastic one. Glad we finally got to know the killer was caught... I used to think about it from time to time, wondering what the killer was doing and if he went to see the movie and tried not to laugh through it about how he got away... if he'd ever be caught, and not just before the movie came out, but he was jailed when I was only 1. Strange to think that the killer who caused me to lose sleep for weeks after my first viewing about who he was and if he was still killing elsewhere, or had he died and never be found was in jail before I was even able to speak or talk. I got so invested into this movie... something about real life cases get to me, I guess because its not just some good detective movie but because it actually holds real weight and victims behind the material

I just watched the movie last night (got turned on to Bong Joon Ho after watching Parasite last year and then also watched Snowpiercer which obviously didn't get the credit it deserved when it came out in 2013 in the US . I agree with the comments about the killer being unknown at the end of the movie (could have been anyone) since the real serial killer was still unknown when the movie was released in 2003. What I find very interesting is the similarities btwn the real serial killer and the "factory worker" suspect in the movie. The real serial killer Lee Choon-jae was finally caught in 2019 (linked thru DNA evidence but had been in jail for 20+ yrs for killing his sister-in-law). He was a shy and introverted, ex-military, and in his early 20's (just like the young factory worker in the movie) when he started his killing spree. So whomever wrote the screenplay for the movie did an excellent job of profiling what kind of person the real killer may be. According to his confession and testimony Lee Choon-jae killed b/c after the structure and thrill of serving in the military (which gave his life purpose) ended when he was discharged, the monotonous grind of a "working life" caused him to seek thrill/stimulation elsewhere. And in his sociopathic mind that meant exerting extreme control over others by committing violent crimes against women. His first victim was killed in Sep 1986 (she was 71 years old) and he killed 9 more women/girls thru April 1991 (including 2 who were only 14 years old). No one knows why he stopped his murderous spree but he did get married (sociopaths can be charming for a little while) but after his wife left him he invited his wife’s 18 year old sister over in Jan 1994 and then drugged, raped and killed her. He was arrested a few days later (before doing so he helped his wife's family look for their "missing" daughter) and was convicted/sentenced to life in prison but the Police never linked him to the earlier murders until more advanced DNA testing was used in 2019.

If I remember correctly, some of the suspects who were tortured have now been compensated etc. The factory-worker suspect also contains several other nuggets of truth, from what I understand. One of them being how he fits the description of having "soft hands". However, in line with what I've tried to sketch out in the essay, I think the most interesting part of the character of the factory-worker was that he looks so generic. So, even if he was indeed the killer, and was seen by a witness, they still wouldn't be any closer to the truth. Because he's so average looking, with no distinct features apart from the "soft hands" , the witness would have nothing to go by, and would thus be of no help to the police. That also ties in with how the little girl describes whoever she saw in the fields - "he was just normal". Another thing to keep in mind was that the police also had the real killer in for questioning at one point, but not as a suspect I believe.

I stopped the video when the killer emerges from the field to attack the woman bringing the umbrella to her husband at the factory (48:51) which was based on one of the real killings (as were the peaches and the spoon/pen). The "killer" was young but didn't really look like the factory worker (I'm surprised Bong Joon Ho put that quick glimpse in the movie). I also analyzed the factory worker's hands during the scene when the detectives first interrogate him and then again the slow moving scene showing the killers hand on a tree before the last murder (when the killer is deciding which female on the path he is going to attack) and again nothing conclusive. Finally I looked at the clothes the factory worker was wearing when he got on the bus to see if they matched the killer's clothes in the last murder scene as the camera focuses on him for awhile as he carries the young girl thru the woods. Not a surprise that there was no conclusive evidence in the movie since the truth of who the killer was in real life was unknown. I did see a TH-cam video of deleted scenes from the movie (13 mins worth)- subtitles weren't great but you could get the gist of the dialogues. And I believe that Bong Joon Ho cut these scenes out so that there is more ambiguity towards who the killer b/c the scenes point toward the factory worker. One 60 second clip was more from the initial interrogation of the factory worker- the Shaman pulls down the factory worker's pants and underwear to see if he is has any pubic hair and he does not. The Shaman then stares into his eyes. Another 75 second clip shows the female police woman talking alone with the factory worker in the interrogation room after he had been beaten by the Kicker. She place a lamp and a tape cassette on the desk where the factory worker is sitting. She plays a particular song on a cassette tape which they discuss (she is trying to get clues about the song). A final 150 second video clip which takes place after the beat down/DNA scene (after they let the hand-cuffed factory worker go) is very telling. The Shaman is cleaning out his desk- assuming he is quitting and leaving the police force as he slowly packs his bag and looks around the empty room. He then goes down in the basement to the interrogation room where the the Scientist is staring blankly at the empty interrogation chair and desk. The Shaman puts his hand on the Scientist shoulder, says he is sorry and walks away. A few seconds after the Shaman leaves the lamp on the interrogation desk begin to flicker for almost a full minute-lightness and darkness as the camera pans toward the empty chair and then back to the Scientist's face as he begins to cry. To me the flickering lights say everything- the detectives had the killer in w/in their grasps (in full "light") but couldn't convict him primarily b/c of all the chaos (darkness) that was going on not only w/in themselves and the police force (lack of good forensics, belief in rumors and shamans, police brutality and forced confessions, e.g.) but also w/in Korean society as a whole during that time (violent uprising against a repressive govt, women living in a misogynistic culture). So to go back to your point, the truth was there in front of them but became elusive. And yes the factory worker could have been any "average" looking Korean citizen (any male citizen that is).
That's really cool. I didn't know there were deleted scenes. I'll have to look that up. And yes, I think it's safe to say that Bong had other interests than making a traditional "whodunnit".
One thing i would mention is the 3 main suspects represent the 3 detectives as well. The disabled one represents the kicker, the red underwear one represents the shaman and the last one represents the scientist as well

Yup definitely a slow burner. The beginning of the film, I was like "where is this film going" but then towards the end, what a turnaround.... Great analysis of the film too! 16 years later, the same director made oscar winning parasite. Definitely carving his name as one of the best auteurs out there.

I felt that final look in my soul. immediately I thought I'm a sus too 😄 powerful powerful powerful human connection. Even after years even from different countries us humans can have a connection by eyes.
The cases were solved in 2020. The criminal is Choon jae Lee, male 60 years old. He has been prison since 1994 by another crime which was murder and rape. Police extrated DNA from victim's clothes by progressive science. The prosecution charged him for serial murder and rape. And there is a innocent victim Mr.Yoon who was arrested 1988 by police for 8th murder case. He was tortured by police. He insisted that he was not guilty in court but sentenced 20 years in prison. The real criminal will not be able to get out of the prison before he die and Mr.Yoon opened damage suit to government. Interestingly Lee,the criminal, said that he actually watched this movie in prison before his crimes were detected.
This video really added some value to the film for me. I was somewhat disappointed after I watched it even though I tend to like 'special' or 'different' movies. Now that I know why the police men are all so stupid and that's it's based on an actual case, I can appreciate it more. Still horrible pacing during the first half imo. After 70 minutes it felt like 90 but it wasn't...

I know who was killer. New ditective 1. When a lady murdered near factory. A man comes out from grass was new decective. You can see his face in movie by push video. 2. When dectives sent a red cloth woman on road. You should see the exact location closely there were two tree where new detective stand. And This was the location where last murder done and killer stand there and two tree were also in last murder scene. 3. The killer fingers were long in last scene. 4. Now you will say that when both were fighting the murder done same time. So this fight was not too much long.

To me the flickering lights say everything- the detectives had the killer in w/in their grasps (in full "light") but couldn't convict him primarily b/c of all the chaos (darkness) that was going on not only w/in themselves and the police force (lack of good forensics, belief in rumors and shamans, police brutality and forced confessions, e.g.) but also w/in Korean society as a whole during that time (violent uprising against a repressive govt, women living in a misogynistic culture).
So to go back to your point, the truth was there in front of them but became elusive. And yes the factory worker could have been any "average" looking Korean citizen (any male citizen that is).
That's really cool. I didn't know there were deleted scenes. I'll have to look that up.
And yes, I think it's safe to say that Bong had other interests than making a traditional "whodunnit".

One thing i would mention is the 3 main suspects represent the 3 detectives as well. The disabled one represents the kicker, the red underwear one represents the shaman and the last one represents the scientist as well

Yup definitely a slow burner. The beginning of the film, I was like "where is this film going" but then towards the end, what a turnaround.... Great analysis of the film too! 16 years later, the same director made oscar winning parasite. Definitely carving his name as one of the best auteurs out there.

The cases were solved in 2020. The criminal is Choon jae Lee, male 60 years old. He has been prison since 1994 by another crime which was murder and rape. Police extrated DNA from victim's clothes by progressive science. The prosecution charged him for serial murder and rape. And there is a innocent victim Mr.Yoon who was arrested 1988 by police for 8th murder case. He was tortured by police. He insisted that he was not guilty in court but sentenced 20 years in prison. The real criminal will not be able to get out of the prison before he die and Mr.Yoon opened damage suit to government. Interestingly Lee,the criminal, said that he actually watched this movie in prison before his crimes were detected.

This video really added some value to the film for me. I was somewhat disappointed after I watched it even though I tend to like 'special' or 'different' movies. Now that I know why the police men are all so stupid and that's it's based on an actual case, I can appreciate it more. Still horrible pacing during the first half imo. After 70 minutes it felt like 90 but it wasn't...

2. When dectives sent a red cloth woman on road.
You should see the exact location closely there
were two tree where new detective stand. And
This was the location where last murder done and killer stand there and two tree were also in last murder scene.
3. The killer fingers were long in last scene.
4. Now you will say that when both were fighting the murder done same time. So this fight was not too much long.
