    WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
    The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
    The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
    We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

      DrJames Powers Spiritual research is not going to get you closer to the christian god if you don’t even believe in his existence. Spiritual research can lead you to any god or none at all. What is your actual evidence for the existence of YOUR god?

    • @brentf6747
      @brentf6747 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      DrJames Powers We don’t know how life began but we do know how it evolved to different species. To say that life was perfectly designed is just wrong. I could point out many flaws, but I’ll give you one example... If you look at the anatomy of giraffes for example, there is an important nerve that runs from the brain, all the way down its neck, circles around vital organs, only to go back up its neck to a certain organ in its head. This nerve serves no purpose to his neck, or the vital organs its circled around. This is clearly a weakness for the animal and a flaw that can only be explained through evolution...

    • @icemachine79
      @icemachine79 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @DrJames Powers Your copypasta never provides any true or useful answers, Dr. Jimmy. We've already established that numerous times. Remember when we talked about the "mud puddle" analogy and how that completely wrecks your anthropocentric and fine-tuning arguments for god(s)? Perhaps you should find something more worthwhile to do with your time.

    • @brentf6747
      @brentf6747 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      DrJames Powers Quoting the Bible is not going to prove the existence of your god, the bible makes the claim, the claim cannot be evidence by definition. That is circular reasoning. The bible CLAIMS god created the earth and the bible CLAIMS Jesus existed and rose from the dead. The bible is mot evidence.
      Also, misinterpreting scientific facts, theories and scientists’ quotes is not going to help your case. The truth is, we simply don’t know what caused the big bang, we don’t know how matter came into being, we don’t know what was before the big bang. We can’t even assert there was nothing before the big bang as we have no way of knowing what came before, but we also dont even know if absolutely nothing is possible in the first place. It’s not like scientists can measure or test on “nothing”. You simply CANNOT assert that a god did it because science has not found an answer for it YET. Reinterpreting the bible to make it fit within science or misinterpreting science to make it fit within your religion is wrong.
      Be humble enough to admit that you and that bible of yours do not have all the answerd.

    • @stylis666
      @stylis666 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@JamesRichardWiley It's probably the fear of the unknown. For some people it can be paralyzing, just as some people are sensitive to addiction and some are not.
      If there's anything I've learned from the thousands of (mostly just reworded) arguments from theists and otherwise superstitious people it's that all of their arguments, all though they're (re-)packaged in many different logical fallacies to (sometimes) hide the true motives for and nature of the arguments, boil down to arguments from ignorance and/or wishful thinking. And when non theists still argue for maintaining and/or protecting religion, the argument is always an appeal to emotion where fear of chaos is the main (unproven) theme. Some apologists don't even try to hide it, like John Lennox (who is a christian theist) and Jordan Peterson (who is just a fearful idiot).
      And then there are those who want to believe for the sake of divine vengeance, which they call justice.
      So I think that basically fear of not knowing, fear of an uncertain future, fear of having to deal with people possibly getting away with crimes, etc. are the main reasons why people believe in the supernatural to begin with.
      Think about this: if you are able to accept any situation, regardless of how shit it is, and are simply prepared to deal with it, perhaps with the help of others, would you pray for a god to help or hope for a better afterlife where the 'wicked' are punished? That's why I think that the inability to do this leads to superstition. Probably caused by many complex causes, such as upbringing, trauma, genes, combinations of those and many other causes.

    After watching countless episodes of the Atheist Experience, I’ve concluded that 3 main groups of people exist
    1. People who were spared from religious brainwashing as children and see reality for what it is. They tend to use objectivity and logical reasoning to make sense of the world.
    2. The people who were emotionally abused and deceived by religion but have the mental capacity to overcome it. They are also able to use objectivity and logical reasoning to make sense of the world.
    3. The people who were or are emotionally abused and deceived by religion but who do not have the mental capacity (this is clearly obvious listening to them on your show) to be objective and rational to overcome their religiously induced fears and misguided views.
    Sadly it is the latter that is clearly the largest group. But I’m optimistic as I believe that young people’s access to the internet, like shows such as this, may counteract the bullshit that they are being fed by religion.
    Thank you for being part of the solution guys.

I think they are genuinely going to reflect on this call, I am so pleased to have watched this whole video. Matt and Don were so courteous and yet still took Kelly to task for making illogical and/or irrational things that weren't supported by evidence. I love how Matt basically just asked questions of the caller, and you could tell when Kelly realized they had no answer or didn't have good reasons for their answer, you can just tell they were honestly starting to question themselves and their faith. The youngest was supposed to be coming for University and when he was at the airport, his father gave him a lot of money and told him not to come back to help him escape. He told me how strict religion was forced on the people and the women had to start wearing the veil again, etc... All credit to the caller, who was honest and respectful, and to Matt for dialing things down a little in response. Also, as much as one can criticise Iran for its policies on any number of issues, it's surprisingly tolerant of trans people - they've been officially recognised since the 1980s (not long after the revolution), and Iran now has the second largest number of sex reassignment operations in the world (behind Thailand), and the government provides public funding for it. That said, I can accept much of what Matt says about sex reassignment not being a thing centuries ago, and I can add that there are reports that Iran's persecution of gay men leads many to sex reassignment when it's unsuitable for them.

      I was happy with the conversation the way it is and that "Kelly" was trying to understand but you are right. It shoud have been stated. It is a total bullshit that Quran /Islam allows gender transitioning. it's just a coincidence that happenned in Iran; just because one person at the early stage of so-called Iranian Revolution convinced just one person, Khomeini about it and he just allowed it by himself as a dictorial leader. There has never been an intellectual debate among shia clerics about it. Otherwise trasgenders would have been killed just like gay men in Iran today.. There is no other Muslim country in the world that allows transitioning, other than constitutionally secular Turkey as far as I know. She's just pretending how accepting her faith is in a country where women cannot even go out without a silly scarf... If I had been born as man, why would I even transition into a woman in such a shity society, to begin with?... I am from Istanbul by the way

The guest was receptive and listed more than 5 minutes in complete silence and tried to absorb the knowledge that was exhuming instead of trying to talk. This is how you can come to an honest understanding or at least can agree to dissagree. At no point was there manipulation tactics of not trying to answer a question or purposefully misunderstanding things. Yeah refreshing it was, an actual conversation and progress.

    I always liked George Carlin’s brand of humor: smart AND funny. I think he was a brilliant person, and one hilarious comedian. I miss his presence, and I sure would have liked to hear anything he might have to say about today’s headlines. I especially enjoyed some of his comments about religion - he was so right about so many things, in my opinion. I don’t know if he was a true scholar of any particular ideology, but even if he was, I think he based his funniest bits and routines on the hypocrisy and fallacious reasoning that is so prevalent in all organized religion.
    “Religion - religion, at best - at BEST - is like a lift in your shoe. If you need it for a while, and it makes you walk straight and feel better - fine. But you don’t need it forever, or you can become permanently disabled. Religion is like a lift in the shoe, and I say just don’t ask me to wear your shoes. And let’s not go down and nail lifts onto the natives’ feet.”

    To know something is perfect requires a preexisting standard or template for comparison.

      I don't blame her, Iranian religion education is put together so well, so smart , I wish I could show you the books I study at highschool. It starts early at age 7 and can trick your mind with the kind of literature they use. They are perfect frauds.

      @@saraha6571 I was lucky in that my parents (in the UK) weren't atheists but they were hardly religious at all so we never went to church and I was pretty much allowed to make my own mind up. And our RE at school was very weak. When I realised Santa Claus wasn't real it took me like an hour to realise god wasn't real either and it was all just made up.
