Fond memories of a brilliant design and so pleased that 15 of them (out of an original 155) have survived and been preserved.
Yes you are absolutely correct. My parents used to live close to the Oxted Line so I used to see Std4 tanks daily. They used to run with 8;coach rush hour trains from Victoria and London Bridge and not hold up Brighton Line electrics . The in off peak haul 3 And 4 coach trains economically.Home in those days was Sanderstead. Happy days.
It's allowing any water that may have condensed in the cylinders to escape, as water trapped in there can damage the cylinder cover when the piston reaches the end of the stroke.
The loco will have just come off shed which is less than 1/4 mile so not far enough to warm the steam circuit to expel all the condensation. It will be safe to close the cylinder drain cocks by the time the train enters the tunnel.
@@johnfry1011”Damaged” is not the proper word. A year or two ago, a narrow gauge locomotive here in the States got water in a cylinder. It reduced the piston to crushed gravel and blasted a fist-sized hole in the cylinder head.
@FS2K4Pilot Ouch!! Horrible to hear about knowing to time effort and money spent keeping locomotives running; and repairing them after incidents like that.

A marvellous class of loco, will easily take a 7 coach dining train up the 1/49 gradient to Goathland.

At 1:42 why is there steam coming out of the carriage/bogies?
The carriages are heated by steam being piped through the train to radiators under the seats and some of it leaks at joints.
