I recently watched a restorer using a HAAS toolroom lathe, now lusting after one. It is a hybrid manual/CNC lathe, looks like a manual lathe, but has a CNC control. You can use it either way, or set up the cuts manually and then turn the CNC loose.
To get Lucie to Pickering I was expecting it to be drawing a 5 plank wagon with coal in it and a water carrier of some description. Unless Piglet took the easy option & pulled it behind a diesel.
Yes the MPD still use traditional lathes which are constantly in use and used by highly skilled machinists but you can turn out over 2500 stays which are different sizes more quickly and more efficiently and these machines can be used for this purpose whilst freeing up the other lathes at the MPD.

Can no one use a lathe these days and turn things without computers doing it for them?
