- This is the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the best, most powerful.. Most capable Galaxy to date.. And as of the moment of this video, one of the best phones that's almost ready to hit the market. I know there are already some reviews circulating out there, but given the fact that the software isn't final.. The camera app has been hanging here and there.. We decided to hold our review for a bit and tell you how the experience has been so far. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow, and I've just spent a week with the Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

I am on my recently purchased, a few months ago, "renewed" used, perfect out of the box, Note 9.
I chose it instead of the Note 10+ due to limited funds, lack of fluency to be able to exploit the functionality of this or the Note 10+ at this point (this'll be my new hobby, I'm 72), comes with a headphone jack, micro-SD slot, Bluetooth s-pen, etc. and I paid $555.
We'll see what future iterations have to offer and then decide if I can justify upgrading again.

This is the review I have been looking for, I am making the switch back to Android with this phone ever since the note 7. This review seals the deal and now I cannot wait.

Actually, you're wrong about not being able to use other pens while the S Pen is inserted. There is a setting under S Pen advanced settings called "Save Power" that controls whether your phone can detect if your pen is inserted or not, and you toggle it in order to use other pens while the S Pen is inserted. Of course, there is another separate setting that still lets you know if you walked away without the S Pen, so the two settings don't conflict with each other and you're good to go.
More accurately, it doesn’t stop the phone from detecting whether or not the pen is inserted, it just leaves detection on in the screen regardless (which consumes more power)

I contacted. Samsung UK to ask if I buy an S Pen of a different colour to that which came with the Note 9 and the answer was yes. So you can buy and pair another Note 9 S Pen without an issue.

Yup, my pre order from Samsung online in New Zealand gives me a free duo charger plus an extra sylus pen with color of your choice. I went with copper for my spare pen.. I'm getting the blue note9

Also you can use other S pens by simply turning the "save battery" option in the S pen setting. This allows you to dock the S pen inside and use any other S pen.
Point of correction, you do not need to remove the S Pen for another Spen to work. There's a setting that makes that possible.

Oh Jaime, I just can't quit you man. I pre-ordered this device because I have no doubt it will continue to be the device I've always known and loved... plus add a number of 2018 bells and whistles. Although I am admittedly a fan of the Galaxy Note line of flagships (I too have owned each one since the Note 2), there is a certain peace that falls upon me when I see work from you - someone who truly appreciates the device for the value it adds to one's life (Even though you likely still have that Pixel 2 tucked into your other pocket,) I've got nothing but love and respect for you man.

The S pen from the Note 8 does work with the Note 9 with basic functionality, no Bluetooth functions work. The S pen for Samsung works for all platforms that support it. Also the Note 9 is slightly thicker so no you cannot insert the Note 9 pen inside a Note 8. Just set the Spen to Power Saver and any S pen will work
I cant wait to get mine. Feels like I preorder it forever ago. So ready to get away from iPhone

Its a very awsome phone. I have the 512 gb storage and the 8 gb RAM version. Beast mode. Its going to be very hard to beat.
Compare it to the s9+. Give the differences and list them on screen throughout the comparison part of the video. Then say how important you think they are (for example a shiny bezel isn't going to help with sound quality or anything so not that important) and what the s9+ has as a come-back (for example you can use the S pen to take a photo but you can also use your palm on the s9+ therefore not really that special and although the note 9 sees if someone's blinked, so can a human just by looking at the photo). Also, compare sound quality of the speakers and earphones with the s9+. Compare what comes in the box. Compare fingerprint and intelligent scan unlocking speeds. Compare chip speeds. Compare ram management. Compare video playback. Compare your personal real-life battery life statistics. Compare what you get for the extra $x, is the extra $$$ really worth the small upgrades from the s9+? Thanks.

CyberJam Sam basically the only difference is the spen features and functions. A couple other smaller things like the camera is slightly better but that's it really.
From my experience the S series have always been glitchy. While my Notes performed flawlessly.

Himanshu Chamoli it doesn't the Note 8 didn't last all day that no 8 had a 3300 milliamp hour battery and only lasted 4 hours I'd be surprised I've been known I lasted 8 hours on full brightness that's why iPhones are better I've had my for 4s my old iphone from 7 years ago on full brightness for 2 weeks and it's still at 50% and it's a seven year old device just sitting doing nothing with the screen off you try to do that with an Android phone and it won't last that long especially nowadays that's why you got to love old iPhones or just iPhones in general they tend to hold a charge better than and iPhones that's just the truth not saying I don't like Android phones I do I had a S5 in the past a S6 and now a Google pixel 1 and still to this day in the pixel is 2 years old in the ass sex is 3 years old and the all that smile I used to have was 3 years old well at least it would be if I still have it but I traded it in for the Galaxy S6 when I bought that and then I'm using the S6 to type on right now with my voice and I have a Google pixel as my actual phone right now so the S6 is my old device I'm using to tell you this by voice because it would be hard to type this sentence very fast with just my fingers with under 2 minutes

riley busse the only iPhone I was ever impressed with the battery life was the 7 plus. My other iPhones suck and if you don't have a 9 you can't say it doesn't have an all day battery.

riley busse my note 8 lasts me all day.Admittedly I sometimes use the power saving feature which make little if any difference to running of phone other than battery lasting longer.But then I am not a 13yr old girl with social media accounts.i have a life and job which pays for these devices.My s7 edge was better of course(another great phone)I also use and have enjoyed iPhones.

JDM FTW nah it's not just about the pen do your research lol. 4k MAH battery, AI powered camera (same sensors as the s9+ but is powered by AI technology) bluetooth spen with a lot of pressure points thingy, and a better screen (the best phone screen in the market)

@@bobjohnson6131 well samsung has a program for the note 9 you get 50% off and you have to use it with a certain app on the phone for a year then after the year is up you can do whatever you want with the phone I am hoping to get into it.
Turning off Power Saver feature under S Pen settings might allow you to leave the included S Pen inside while you use the 3rd party pen. I just traded up to the Note 8 & it allows this option.

At the most this phone will win best Screen, like SAMSUNG phones do every year. People are already hating on the Pixel 3 & any phone with a notch. But in reality that Ugly PIXEL 3 will have a much more FLUID experience than any other Android or iPhone. Unless Apple finally fixes all of it's bugs.

Theres an option in settings that allows you to use another s pen while the s pen is still inside. I'm not sure where it is, but it should be there unless Samsung got rid of it. Also, I'd like to see the photo quality improvements over the Note 8, speaker quality vs the s9 plus, screen brightness vs the note 8, and how that new cooling actually works on the day to day.

some people don`t think about the difference of ssd speed (a ssd with more space has better read and write speeds than a smaller one) idk if the note 9 flash storage is faster with the 512gb version and 8gb of ram is mostly better in multtasking but thats it.

Got my S9+ three weeks ago and it stutters on a daily basis. Lag hasn't happened yet but I'm expecting it. Performed 2 factory resets on it already and Samsung customer service says they have no idea what to tell me or what's going on with it. Can't wait to dump this "flagship."

Fingerprints are a moot point. Most everyone puts an ugly case on the phone anyway! Gee, can you please pull the phone out of that case so I can see those ugly fingerprints?

Pocketnow for me, the Pixel or any device following in the steps of Apple with no memory card, is no for me good sir. The fingerprint reader wasn't an issue for me and the fingerprints are DEFINITELY a non issue. I always have a microfiber cloth nearby anyway. So, as you always say, I guess it comes down to us the users and our preferences. What we're willing to access and what we're not. Keep doing what you're doing Jamie River-Run! Love the content. @@Pocketnow Highly agreed. Back when I had the first gen Pixel XL, I traded it in for the regular S8 and HATED the position of the finger print sensor, I ended up returning the S8 and getting the Pixel 2 XL.
The complaint is valid though as the Note 9 lacks oleophobic coating on the back glas which makes it greasier than it should. Even midrange phones on other brands with glas back does this properly.
You can use other wacom pens, you have to go into S-Pen settings in advanced features, then turn off power saver.
Should you move the SD card before or after the Smart Switch?

But especially true battery, bechmark, and camera comparisons. Then later on when the OnePlus 6T, LG V35, Google Pixel 3 XL, and new iPhone X come out.

I just got my Note 9 today I have yet to power it on. I'm waiting on my case and a tempered glass screen protector to get here before i bother with it. I'm still using my Note 8 which I love and it still works great.
This may, or may not be the best phone this year so far, as it’s the latest, that is not headline news. There are no bad flagships anymore so no point arguing whether this is good or bad, it’s good. The stuff you mentioned that are useful, Bixby, duplicate apps, secure folders will be of no interest apart to a niche small group. The improvements are good but Samsung are chasing, 6gb RAM, larger storage, bigger battery have been all done in 2017, good but just what I expected a year ago.
The question is that £1000 is it good value? If you analyze it then a definite no no. If you need to upgrade your old Note get a Note 8 at half the price and wait for the new design Note 10 next year, what you saved will help pay the big sticker price. The N9 is a filler, a s9 plus with a more gimmicky spen. It brings little extra to the table as Samsung are holding back on the self healing screen, in screen fingerprint reader, triple cameras, etc. they need them to make the Samsung X stand out, fair enough, but that means the N9 is rather meh, underwhelming as far as other phones this year and overpriced compared to other Android flagships.
A fair review is Samsung are correcting their omissions and moving towards their aim of a “perfect” Samsung fan club phone, it is a minor upgrade, very tiny evolution, though in good ways, but design wise it’s old and those edges are now aesthetically annoying as well as a pain for usability. It will sell to die hard Note fans as they are a closed market, but Samsung are no longer trying with the Note, it’s a clone of the s9 plus with minor upgrades, and really the USP of the Note has been lost by Samsung, they are just too scared to change as they have hit the jackpot with the current design. And of course the price is dumb, just don’t pay it, in three months it will be 33% off at least, the s9 plus was selling for £250 less a few weeks after launch.
andyH_England You are only comparing to Note 8 and S9 which are all fairly new devices. What about consumers coming from the S8 and before generation. That's a big jump in specs.

Great review. I've ordered mine on Samsung upgrade program got to give my note 8 back when it comes. As far as the size goes, I would be happy if they made it even bigger.
I have been an iPhone user since the first one but I’m switching to the Note 9. Far more fun and appealing than the three iPhones I tried today. I briefly tried a Samsung 5 and didn’t like it but this gave me a reason to switch. Headphone jack is a big deal to me and I waited for Apple to reverse it but Bluetooth and charging is annoying. I like the pen and storage and the look and feel of the phone. Impressed! I ordered one
I bought one as soon as the Note 10 came out and dropped it and broke the screen. They are all quite slippery and Samsung should do something about that. I finally got a 10+ but didn't like it. Now I have a new Z Flip 4 and a refurbished Note 9 for my back up. I love it.

In order to use other s-pen's, without needing to remove the integrated s-pen, you have to turn off the "Power Saver" option, under the S Pen settings. That'll allow you to use any S Pen you want, without needing to remove the integrated S Pen.

I meant to also thank you for the review too, I look forward to seeing a more in depth analysis of the numerous features in this monster phone, let's face it, for 1K we need to utilize every single thing this "grand" phone has to offer! lol.. I will say to any note ppl that are considering the note 9, go to the store, hold it, spend some time getting to know it, it's a very different animal from it's older note ancestors. I had the note 1,2,3 and 4 the 4 being my absolute favorite phone ever until the 30 month forced obsolescence of the note 4 by Samsung is still a thorn in my side.. Again I will recommend getting a case and screen protector on the phone immediately. Although the substantial in hand weight of the N9 It's extremely slippery and very easy to drop! It's smooth and sleek on every side and surface so keep the scratch protection film on as long as possible and into a drop cushion reinforced case and SP with warranty as quickly as possible!

U can use the third party Pens when the Spen inside by going to settings and turn off s pen power saving
Off the top of my head I can't remember where the actual setting is but there is an actual switch in one of the settings that will derecognise the S Pen while it's in dock and allow an external pin to be used
The only thing I dislike is that you can't disectivate Bixby button and when I'm removing the phone from the case it always brings Bixby up. Aside from that I love the note9
I went by the Verizon store and pre-ordered a Note 9, 512 GB model. I talked then into installing AIDA64 on the in-store demo model. The rear facing camera on the phone uses the Sony IMX345, same as on the S9+.
So far so good after a few days use. One thing I've noticed is that "Font size" and " Background Color" options are missing in phone Messager settings comparing with Note 8. Hope it will be back after updating.
You need to turn off the power saving mode for spen and than all pens will work even if the spen is in the phone.
If it's like the S9, Under the Intelligent Scan settings, there's an option "Screen On Intelligent Scan." If you disable that, you'll need to swipe up from the lockscreen before before the phone scan yours face/Iris, allowing you to view your lockscreen notifications.
I got my note 9 2 days ago, although it's expensive your getting your money's worth, trust me.
What you mean raise the power button. your hand is small. the Note 9 fits perfectly in my hand.
2 S pens work with one being inside....in S pen settings turn it's power saver off
An earpiece and a mic in S pen can be added to receive calls FROM the S pen. As it has Bluetooth capabilities, this feature could be more welcomed... for example, someone is using the phone placed on the table using S pen and suddenly if someone calls, instead picking the phone up, the calls can be answered from the S pen... What do you think??
Parth Sharma this pen is Bluetooth Low Energy, I don't think that would work here. It would take a new type of pen with full Bluetooth and an actual battery

Jaime, you can quite easily use another sPen while the original is still docked. You only need to switch off the power saver function in sPen settings and hey presto, you are set. 😉 This has been available since the early Note devices. I thought you were supposed to know about stuff like this. It's why people watch. It's for your "expert" knowledge. 😏

Honestly debating buying one myself, switching from iOS to Android this year. Phone looks very good, big battery and pretty much no compromises. No notch is a big plus as well. Only issue is 1000$ price tag.
