Another great video Gavin but for me it's about Budget mostly along with age of home/wiring & location of panel,... For me, I installed a Generator Inlet box to the outside wall of my kitchen with 14 inches of wire to a 20 amp double household outlet on the wall inside the kitchen so this outlet in the kitchen is NOT wired to household wiring, it's for Generator use only. If the power goes out I can simply plug my 1800 watt Inverter Generator into the Generator Inlet then plug my Fridge & Chest Freezer into the outlet fed by the generator :) I can also run an extension cord to Router & TV for entertainment,... It's not a perfect setup but my important basics are covered & this cost me about $50 to set up :)
Excellent comparison! I used a reliance pro tran 10 circuit manual transfer switch for several years. Generator is 40 feet from the house in a large ventilated utility building. Great set up but I changed my back up three years ago to an interlock kit for more circuit choices. Caution: I am not an electrician so I had all of my work inspected by a master electrician. Thanks again for this review...very good.
Curious, how do non portable generac home back up generators work then? They transfer automatically and power the whole house. Can you then combine these two you talk about into something that would work like the generacs I see that sit on concrete pads?
I think the title of your video is confusing. You are discussing the difference between a transfer switch solution and an "Interlock" solution. You didn't mention the one big advantage of a transfer switch is that most of them have load meters on each leg. That allows you to balance the power between the two generator windings. If you are drawing 30A a generator likes to see 15A from each leg. They aren't happy with drawing 5A from one let and 25A from the other leg.
Is there an after-market automatic transfer switch that will not only start the generator, but will also switch the mains off and switch to the generator input? I'm thinking of those Generac whole house standby generators. My mom had one up north and when the power went out, it automatically started up and switched over from the mains. Then switched back when the power came back on and shut down the generator. That would be perfect for that monster Westinghouse generator. You'd never get stuck out your driveway gate.😁
Can I use the 50a setup for times when I want to switch from my outside big gen to using only my Delta pro with an adapter? (of course I would be only switching on a few ckts)
Hi Gavin I just a 30 amp inlet box installed. The problem is i don't have power to my 3 bedrooms and living room outlets. Do I need a 30 amp double breaker I think the electrician used a single 30 amp breaker. I have 3000 honda invertor generator. All 240 is turned off.
Gavin, I plan on getting a transfer switch installed, and we have a basement in our home. I seek to get the Reliance switch installed, but here's the thing, I want 2 x 30 amp receptacles using 1 box outside for gas generators, and another box installed in our basement for smart generator batteries. I want to have both inlets connected to that one Reliance circuit board thats in the basement. Do you see a problem with it doing this way, or is it ok to do sir?
Love the video. I am doing an install of the bluetti ep500 pro two of them brideged along with a whole house propane generator. This exactly what I was thinking of doing both . Loved the video .
That is an incredible set up! I have 2 fuse boxes set in parallel in my basement. I have a 12k generator (duramax). What would you recommend that I do to connect my generator to my house? Should I just do a transfer switch?
Are you sure about a transfer switch being able to use a bonded neutral generator? I thought this was only true if you're using a transfer switch that has enough poles that the neutral also gets switched. I don't believe Reliance Controls is manufacturing the versions (Link-X) which can switch the neutral anymore although some are still available from retailers. The regular Pro/Tran series doesn't switch the neutral.
EE here. I agree with your assessment. Unless the transfer switch switches the neutral (most small ones do not), the generator neutral must be floating because the home's neutral and ground connection will still be bonded at the service entrance or first point of disconnect.
I'm scratching my head. Not all transfer switches have integrated inlet receptacles. A lot of transfer switches use a remote inlet box. If your main panel is located in another part of the house you will have difficulty using an integrated switch. Your generator might be located outside or out on a porch. In those cases you probably won't be using a transfer switch with an integrated inlet.
And I don't have a gate every power goes out when I'm not home I want power to stay on so that's the way I'm going to look up things meaning some things will never be hooked up to the grid.
Of course I can I'll just hook it up to an inverter well I'll probably just hook it up to its own thing that is also rated for a UL certified so if there's an accident when the power comes back on it doesn't fit into the grid when there's no power coming in of course I'm going to wire it sorry never going to the grid the grid never be able to power it and if it has an option the option would be the inverters or certain things that it's actual hooked up to that the grid can not power and that is what I'm taking a way from the grid this year but the inverters will still be hooked up to the grid but the grid will never power inverters that's what the batteries are for and the solar panels are for I just got too much solar panels for the inverters and I'm not going to but 12 inverters only six of them I will buy. Oh you already got the idea.

I installed an inlet box, 30 amp breaker, with an interlock kit. Waiting for the inspector to come and check it out. Thanks for sharing.

First! Lol
I had my inlet installed last Saturday, same one you have on your video with fancy green light. Waiting for Genmax now
First 🎊👍🏾💯😎🙏🏾

Yes this one has the ATS so it will do the automatic transfer switch

I will check on the title
Thanks buddy 👍🏾

Hey Tom
This ATS does exactly what you just described. It does switch the power from the main and switches back when the power comes back.

Yes, you can do that but it really works best with a transfer switch because you can still power the large loads on the grid.

You may not have chose those location on your critical panel transfer switch
Thanks keep up the good work

I will have to check I’ve never heard of that setup before

Much Obliged Gavin.
What does floating mean? I have a 50 amp inlet box , newly installed.
Floating means the generator neutral wire, and ground wire are not bonded together
That is an incredible set up! I have 2 fuse boxes set in parallel in my basement. I have a 12k generator (duramax). What would you recommend that I do to connect my generator to my house? Should I just do a transfer switch?
With the inlet box the entire house will have power since your generator is large enough.
50a interlock, are you supposed to power that with 120v or 240v? If you power it with 120v will your 240v appliances still work? Thanks
240v generator is best unless you have only 120v loads, otherwise you will not be able to power any 240v loads

I'm confused there too
@@josephknapick5307 that was confusing to me as well
Hi Gavin. Enjoyed your teachings as usual. Your #1. Great success to you.

Thanks buddy 🙏🏾
Couldnt you just install an inlet and then use your normal home circuit panel to control what is powered and what isnt?
Yes I has both for testing purposes
Great video 👍. Thanks.
Thanks 🙏🏾
Gavin: at 9:10 what is the name of the cable?
Parkworld Combiner, Household (2) 5-15 Plug to Generator Twist Lock L14-30 Y Adapter Cord (13.5 FT)

I can’t talk about all transfer switches, but I can’t show you which one I picked. I’m talking about the one I have.
And I don't have a gate every power goes out when I'm not home I want power to stay on so that's the way I'm going to look up things meaning some things will never be hooked up to the grid.
You have to convert the generators to a floating neutral before you hook it up to your house via a power inlet box.
Yessir
Why is this please explain why not if I have a transfer switch though
Great info ! 👍❤️🙏
Thanks 🙏🏾 💯👍🏾
Should mention a generlink...those are completely different
Thanks for the information 👍 wish I had your garage. Good luck, Mike
Thanks Mike
