This special type of engineers that could never get loud or excited about their product. Because they know that they made the best product possible. Period. You gotta love them. Great little insight in the product development and philosophy behind Leica engineering. And thank you for giving this man and his team the well deserved attention.
Such an astute comment. I could watch this video many times -and have - just to absorb the excellence and raw cerebral horsepower that embodies every facet of Leica... So quiet, so comfortable in the true understanding of something so few could ever fully embrace...all with a quiet confidence, complete with his own style and gentle smile. Sooooo German in the best of all possible ways. Yeah I can say that, as that half of my family has lived in the area surrounding Wetzlar and Frankfurt for over 300 years. Farmers and tradesmen mostly, this generation deeply involved in many hand-on aspects of industrial engineering and design that this area of Germany is so steeped in precise tradition. See also the video with Stefan Daniel!
Oh! My God... First hand interview... Measuring at 60 lines... I remember, Leica used to claim "every aperture is a working aperture " True... A very honest and outspoken interview... no superlative adjectives... Very nice indeed...
Fascinating interview. So Leica made their APS-C line of lenses too good so they decided they had to make the next gen full frame lenses even better to maintain a differential. The more I learn about Leica the more I understand why they are held in such esteem. They don't sit on their laurels, if they chose to they have a lot to sit on, instead they just concentrate on producing quality. Would love to own one. *edit* Oh-Oh, just bookmarked the Leica UK store in my browser.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! I enjoyed that interview. Being an engineer, I can feel how proud he is of what he’s done. So inspiring. And now I don’t doubt all of the TL lenses I have too! Thanks for this!
This is an awesome interview. Peter is so gracious to do this for you and us. I do know at f/2 these are incredible. I am so happy I traded in my other brand for the SL2 system.
Having invested in the G9 and using the Leica lenses, I am excited to know the mindset that seems bent on perfection. Thank you Hugh for communicating so well the genius of this family called Leica!!
One of those rare videos/interviews, that you don't want to come to an end. I'd happily watch another hour of your talking with Peter. A shame it'll take a lottery win for me to afford an SL2 and any lenses!
Just a wonderful interview, Hugh! Great to hear Peter talk about lens product development. What a charming person, I could talk with Peter all afternoon. 60 lines/mm at 50% Contrast! Whoa!
Writing this comment halfway through the video: Excellent interview! Lab geeks (I use the term with affection, I have nothing but respect for people at the very top of their field) always have a hard time expressing themselves, but you always manage to ease them! PS: Seriously Hugh, Leica, out of simple courtesy and gratitude, owes you a BIG discount on their products...
Thank you for that Video! For me Peter is a hero. His work is impressive. The Lenses are the secret treasure of leica. A lot of Camera Companys have very good lenses but leica is outstanding and Peter is the reason why they are that good. A lot of lenses are very good tools for Photography work but his lenses are more than that. They are pieces of Art. The world is very unfair. Models are superstars everyone knows there Faces, but nobody cares who took the photo and even less people care who build the lenses. I am saving my money for one of this lenses, lot of my friends are lough at me because i want to spent that much money on a lens. "The Canon 85mm 1.8 is the same and costs 10% of the price" but we all know thats not true. This lenses are something special. I dont think Peter will read this but, THANK YOU! and keep on going building these lenses! There are People out there they care about your work and love the final products!
It is nice to have a person (like you) who is a sensible advocate for what Leica and Leica lens design is all about . I was fascinated to hear how good the CL lenses are and that the SL primes were bench marked to achieve same line pair and contrast delivery as their smaller cousins - thanks for the video.
Hi! Great interview! I would be interested in a short video about the interpretation of mtf charts! :) I have a 27mm 2.8 lens on a fuji xt1 and the chart for it shows 45 lines increments but I don't know how to read it!
Simply amazing! If there's one camera I could buy that would fulfil almost all photographic purposes, and do so in the highest quality as regards hardware materials, construction and design, handling ergonomics, and the photographic results, the SL2 is looking like the one that sits at the top of the list as regards full frame, mirrorless, 21st century cameras.
Awesome interview Hugh, captivating in it's content. I learned a lot. Peter is an amazing visionary. One of the mega important figures behind the Legend. You brought this out for all to see, and because of the knowledge and expertise in your questioning plus the interesting personalities you both emit make for an enjoyable watch. It all adds up to the best interview possible on the SL2. Fantastic job.
Awesome interview. Curious if there are published specs for precision of the Lumix S Pro with L mount or Summilux 28mm f/1.7 mounted on Q2 (i.e, number of lines, etc.)?
Well you finished with a statement that I found life affirming; you said you could tell the difference on a low resolution image. Hallelujah!!! It seems that most photograp[hers cant notice this effect but, to my eye, it seems marked. I noticed this the very first time I used my, then new and still favourite, Leica X113 with 23mm f1.7 Summilux. After 50 years it changed my photography forever and I suddenly started taking hyperfocal panaramic street photos. So to shorten an even longer story, microtones are a key to understanding this; I call this lens transparency and presence and all great low glass primes have it; they produce hyperfocal images that seem to be completely alive and real. Its not about sharpness, though most of these classic lenses are sharp. This property enables great lenses to separate a sharp subject from a sharp background by tone alone; given how much I hate bokeh you can bet all my present lenses have this property in spades ;-)
Will let you know shortly - doing a quick test with my Summicron-M 50 later today. But based on my using it with the CL, I expect that the result will look very “filmic.”
If I could swing it I'd buy the SL2 in a New York minute, make that a second, and then I'd be faced with the dilemma of which of a stable of excellent glass to purchase. I'd likely get the 24-90 simply because it covers the range of 80% of the images I take. Add a 135 and I would be about good.
very nice interview , nicely done .... they way Leica people promote themselves and Leica in interview and on camera really changes the way you think about the company , I think we get into a polarised opinion of Leica based on the price of the products , however I don't think you could come across a nicer set of people and a company, I am really starting to see the appeal and why the Leica employees are so loyal.. they really do promote the brand very well,. these interviews for the sl2 launch , I have watched 2 now this one and the one by the Ozzie, and in both cases the Leica guys have been very impressive in their interviews and they are both very interesting ...
Fascinating. A truly fine interview. I’ve seen a lot of interviews on photography and you sir have become the best interviewer. Dick Cavet would be jealous.
Great interview! My only wish for the SL system is a telephoto prime.. I'm not sure why the engineers skipped on this when developing the system. Something similar to the Canon 135mm f2 on the SL would have been INCREDIBLE.
I was considering the SL2, but the recent DP review dampened my enthusiasm. Is the battery weak...2-3 batteries required for a days photo shoot plus 2-3 for video per DP. Likewise, they didn't seem thrilled with the SL2's video auto focus. Thanks.
Chris, Jordan & the team at dpreview are terrific. If you want the best AF in the business, that’s Sony. Contrast detect only AF is not as good at the margin. But for the kind of shooting we do, it works quite well. With THIS written, however, shooting the Sigma 35/1.2 wide-open IS a dicey proposition for ANY contrast detect system in anything but excellent light.
damn my Bank account is already screaming. Great german engineer. perfect interview. Hugh should be an Leica Ambassador. Let us know when you are the next time in Wetzlar. You should do a meet and greet with your german fans!
So what he was saying is they are the Lamborghini and Bugatti of lenses and the rest of the brands range from a Hot Hatch, Mustangs, Corvettes, base model Porsche and McLaren. Talking in those terms and I get it. Actually it was a very educational video. Thanks!
If you can give the sl 50mm 1.4 a try. Like I said earlier someone needs to fly to Germany, walk into Peter's office and give him a high five, fist bump; forget a slap!!!! The lens was SPECTACULAR!!
Thanks! Excellent video. Some recap on my side: 2018: Sorting out many old books from my time at the University. Optics by Hecht & Zajac. I will never need that again. 2019: Having a relapse buying real cameras and lenses. Where did I put my Hecht & Zajac book on Optics?

“The 35.” There you have it. And that ain’t cocky, brother.
Hugh, watching these videos will hurt my bank account!
This is why Leica lenses are so special.
Your Leica interviews are the best! Love the way you framed the question about Peter’s favorite lens.
Fantastic interview Hugh! Would love to see more interviews with lens designers!
Perhaps swing by Zeiss sometime as well ? :)
🙏🏻😊
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! I enjoyed that interview. Being an engineer, I can feel how proud he is of what he’s done. So inspiring. And now I don’t doubt all of the TL lenses I have too! Thanks for this!

Just a wonderful interview, Hugh! Great to hear Peter talk about lens product development. What a charming person, I could talk with Peter all afternoon. 60 lines/mm at 50% Contrast! Whoa!
Stephen Scharf Stephen! 😍
Now I know why Leica lenses cost so much.
wow what a great interview! happy i tune in this evening.
Oh my god I knew he would say 35mm😆 i’m going to go broke because I am definitely going to buy the new Leica SL2
The best 19 minutes of all lens-reviews ever! Thank you for the wonderful conversation! And the slow pace of the conversation ;-)
That BW shot of the woman at the end👌🏼
Right??
Seriously! 😊

Beautiful. So glad my Panasonic S1H can use the L lenses.
Yes!
Excellent interview. I enjoy listening to design engineers discuss their products.
The SL has the best lenses on the planet. Now I have to get the 35 Summicron SL thanks to this video.
Me too!
Great interview. Thanks for publishing this.
My privilege and pleasure!
thx a lot for having this interview taken by you, love it

Truly my privilege and pleasure. Enjoy!
@@3BMEP thank you very much!
Thanks Hugh! Terrific interview! Glad I waited for some peace and quiet to enjoy it fully!
Do you know why Leica don't use a bsi cmos sensor for this camera ?
Would you ever consider to attach the Pana 50 1.4 on your SL? It is said to be a very fine lens, but it is not a Leica-Lens ...
Well you finished with a statement that I found life affirming; you said you could tell the difference on a low resolution image. Hallelujah!!! I wouldn't ever think Peter is cocky at all. I'm testing my new summicron 35 SL tomorrow to see how" the best lens ever made" performs :)
How are M primes on SL2 body? Performance wise...
Will let you know shortly - doing a quick test with my Summicron-M 50 later today. But based on my using it with the CL, I expect that the result will look very “filmic.”
I could not quite put my finger on why the 23mm TL Summicron on my CL was so damned good. It set the standard!
If I could swing it I'd buy the SL2 in a New York minute, make that a second, and then I'd be faced with the dilemma of which of a stable of excellent glass to purchase. I'd likely get the 24-90 simply because it covers the range of 80% of the images I take. Add a 135 and I would be about good.

www.lensrentals.com/blog/2019/10/more-ultra-high-resolution-mtf-experiments/
He doesn't measure Leitz lenses for this post, just Zeiss OTUS, Sigma ART and Canon L, however the L mount available lenses which are especially interesting in this regard are: the ART40mmF1.4 and ART105mmF1.4

OMG this lens is insane - that will be my next one for sure
really want to see more summilux-sl lenses
So glad I bought the 35 f 2 before watching this!
Very clean video.
How about that Sigma fp review..
wow thank you for that interview! Really significant insight of the sl system. Do you know is the zooms has the same degree of image quality than the primes?
Henry Deletra not quite.
This was very educational and interesting!
I watched this video on my Apple iMacPro wth the 29" Retina screen capable of 5k resolution... that last image at the end of the interview... Oh My F*****g God!
Incredible, right?
With great contrast
APO 35./2?
Brillant. Thx 4 sharing , Hugh!
Michael!
PLEASE!!!! 100mm auto focus APO Macro for the SL!!!!! Please!!!!
Your look is so Leica.

5:18 - Leica SL lenses 'go to eleven'.
Nice interview but I don't agree.
What made Leica lenses famous was the ability to show the three-dimensionality of the elements in the photos and separation of the subject and background, providing a unique plasticity.
If I want lenses with huge resolution and a flat reproduction I buy sigma, too many lens inside looking corner to corner resolution is a Huge error, what's why many cinematographers use now Cooke lenses looking back for 3D.
Another issue is the autofocus, for 6000 euros The minimum requirement is to have the same AF performance as the Sony A9.
I understand your reasoning here but keep in mind with the SL summicron lenses they have mostly addressed the three-dimensionality but having the contrast extremely high at the plain of focus and the contrast dips dramatically (intentionally) away from the focus point to give the look of a 1.4 lens
I prefer a Summilux-L 35mm for SL2 if Leica going to make one.
Dancing around the golden cow.
I just bought a UK Lottery Ticket on the basis of this video..... fingers crossed!
Hah!
Saving already.
Love nothing but
Just SUPER!
Never owned Leica anything. What will I notice differently on my S1R between Sigma Art and these?
Love it
Nice & Thanks :)
Hm. Maybe I buy a smaller car next time for the new SL 😍
And people criticize the Panasonic GH5 with its AF....
The SL2 has FAR better AF than the GH5.
Love Leica
yes they are great...but still way overpriced and yes I... make my living as a photographer not dentistry or a surgeon ...hahahaha
I can't afford Leica . I am happy with my Sony and want to improve my skills.
sanch Sanchayan excellent!
Ausgezeichnet !
Dude, there a french photographer here on you tube clowning you cause of this interview.
