i always print it upside down but i just slice off the very top of the helmet that would have had attached supports....then i print the removed part right side up

In cura, you could disable "ensure models are kept apart," insert the support structure, enable "per model settings" for the support structure and drop infill to zero.
Then with custom supports plugin, you can add the supports in between.
I didnt realize there was support material in between the structure! I tried doing it by changing mesh type to support structure, was going to add a wall and drop the individual support infill to zero but cura doesnt have that option.
In theory it should work, I will have to try it on my next mask.

So this may be a dumb idea but what if you sliced the cap of the helmet top off and print it separately then attach later. My logic is if it is the only print failure then remove it and print it separately and properly.

I'll bet those support structures are fun to snap off.
Really nice! I'll have to give some thought to how one might pull this off in Cura. Cura's experimental supports are hollow and might come close, plus it is an automated process.
Why dont you do it diagonally like this \
Then you have less distance from the bottom to the inside top which would need shorter supports/ support column thus reducing the time and material needed.

hey uncle jessie, i know this is an old vid but any advise for a way to do this technique without simplify3d? will it still work in Cura? is Simplify3d worth the investment for this?
Could you modify this just a bit so the internal support also doubles as a helmet stand when you're done?
I use Cura and I print right side up with supports engaged. I use support blocker to block the supports that will fill the dome of the helm. leaving supports that assist other detailed areas. A full mando helmet is 2.5 days to print @10% infill using less than 500grams filament. No support marks on the dome to spend time on. just layer lines that need smoothing but thats normal.

This is not working for me. The helmet just keeps putting support structures from the helmet all the way down to the build plate THROUGH the custom support.
Does this still save material compared to organic Tree support methods? I’m working in Prusa Slicer 2.6.
Just doesn't work for me. I keep wanting to try this method as it looks brilliant but every time I Generate Automatic Supports, it generates them through the internal support and and not letting it stay hollow. This is of course only when I have the helmet selected for support generation. Any Ideas?
Does this not work anymore? Simplify 3D is not recognizing my internal structure and only doing support from the build plate up and filling inside the structure?

What's the minimum build volume you would need to make an average adult sized helmet/mask?
On meshmixer when selecting, you can double click on a face to select the whole thing with clean edges. Or you can generate face groups and only have to select 1 or two groups that way. You may look at exporting the support with the mask together so you don't have to align the support twice! Hope that helps!

Anyone trying this in cura? I think its genius. I've been experimenting with custom supports in Cura 4.11 and they are great but this is next level!

How about a landscape orientation of the mask instead of upside-down portrait.
[The front of the mask is the top, and the bottom is the bak side of the mask (It's hard to explain with just words, sorry)]

Utilamaker Cura 4.9 has support blockers, and colorization. Better supports based on angle amount. 75 is my prefered amount.

why not just print it with the back of the mask on the heatbed( the way it was originally loaded into the slicer program) with internal supports? Would take less time and less plastic waste.

Why dont you like printing a mask like this where there is little back lying down? have you considered doing helmets in 2 halves and then combing them? what would be the pros and cons of each of those methods beyond prefference?

You don't use another process in S3D to use a finer layer height at the top of the helmet to avoid additional ringing (using either orientation or support method)? Or do you find that feature not quite worth the trouble?

Best way to do them is in parts. You avoid lange failed prints and can replace a segment rather than the whole thing.

Good information! Unfortunately I am a bit of a cheap-ass and use Cura and Craftware for my prints. I'll need to do some more research before I try anything of this caliber, but hearing and seeing it in action gives me a bit more confidence. Excellent video!

Really cool. You may want to try double wall and cut out a honeycomb pattern in that structure to save yourself a lot of time and materials.
Robert Cusick yeah I print the structure completely hallow except for 2 walls typically. Works out great... usually haha
