  • RICE - Inoculating bioreactor at Vale nickel refinery
The RICE project is growing algae through utilising CO2 emissions from the Vale nickel refinery in the Swansea Valley, South Wales.
The video shows the early stages of growing the algae in a laboratory before inoculating the one of the 7,500 ltr bioreactors. Undertaken in stages, it took 80 days from first receiving the algae to the bioreactor being fully inoculated.
The next steps will be to harvest the algae, refining it to a stage where it can be used to create value added product including animal feeds, food supplements, lipids, dyes and a wide range of other products. This stage will be covered in another video.
The research project is supported by the Welsh Government through the European Regional Development Fund.
