- Written by Bob Dylan, this week's "Remake of a Classic", The Byrds version of Mr. Tambourine Man, was recorded on January 20, 1965 at Columbia Studios in Hollywood. The song's jangling, melodic guitar line (performed by Roger (Jim) McGuinn on a 12-string Rickenbacker) was immediately influential, and has remained so to this day. Due to producer Terry Melcher's lack of confidence in the rest of the band's musicianship, McGuinn was the only member of The Byrds allowed to play on the song. Instead, Melcher recruited members of L.A.'s Wrecking Crew. The Byrds members McGuinn, David Crosby, and Gene Clark handled the vocals.
The tune reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the UK Singles Chart. The success of the single sparked the Folk Rock boom of the 60s. In fact, the term “Folk Rock” was first used by the press to describe the band's sound.
Tried and true fans of The Byrds' version of the song will no doubt notice that my version is a little longer. When Dylan wrote the song it came in at about five-and-a-half minutes. At the time, radio stations generally wouldn't play anything longer than two-and-a-half minutes so, at the suggestion of the band's manager, Jim Dickson, it was shortened to about two minutes and twenty seconds. The videos I do are a tremendous amount of work; so much so that I really don't want to put a lot of effort into something that's over before you know it. But this is such a great tune, and I really wanted to do it...so I repeated the last part of the verse and added a harmony. I also added another chorus.
This video is also the maiden voyage for two new guitars I've added to my arsenal. First is a 1967 Greco 12-string electric that plays, sounds, and looks amazing; the second is a pink Strat I built using humbucker-size P90s.
If the Byrds had only had one hit we would still remember them 50 years later.....just like this hugely talented fellow has....
That’s a solid cover of this Classic Byrd’s Song........excellent
You, sir, are a bloody genius! A one-man Wrecking Crew!
Thanks again!
Brilliant cover
“Hit after hit after hit!” Good lord Russ, swinging that musical hammer like a wildman, you done nailed another one! Perfect, man.
As always, many thanks for the colorful comments, Joe; I really appreciate it. LOL
@@russwilloughby501 LOL - what is this abbreviation? Lots of love? LOL from Max
Fantastic job Russ , the actual background music on this song was done by The Wrecking Crew featuring Hal Blaine
You are so talented!
Many thanks!
Great job! Long ago I had a Goya Rangemaster 12 from the 60s I also had a Rickenbacker 360/ 12 the neck way to thin . Now I play a Italia Rimini 12 plays great..
Thanks so much! Ah, the Rangemaster....the guitar with more switches than the cockpit of a 747. An Italia Rimini? THAT is one cool guitar!
Welcome to band of left-hat and right feet drummers! ♥
LOL....thanks!
This is so good my wife thought she was listening to The Byrds! Outstanding Russ!!!
Thank you, Robert...so glad you and your wife enjoyed it!
Amazing job Russ ! Thanks 😊
Appreciate it, Paul!
@@russwilloughby501 Your vocals are great ! Maybe, you might do the classics: Four Strong Winds and Leader of the Band ? don't know if they fit this format. Thanks ! :)
Brings back memories. around 10 years old when this came out. thanks

This was really good
Performance of an *absolute beauty.* Thank you for being such great artist.
Thank you very much!
Spirit in the Sky from Norman Greenbaum would be a crowd pleaser. Great job
Don't hate me, but it's never been a favorite. I appreciate the suggestion, thanks!
Another day, another home run by Russ. I love how you give facts about each song you record and I love the fact you reference the Wrecking Crew. The documentary about them is the best rock doc I have ever seen. Such a rich history. Keep on a rockin' Russ! You bring peace and happiness to people everyday on You Tube.
Thanks a million!
I was looking for tambourine music… And this came up. Incredibly beautiful, that is why I just subscribed to your channel thank you Russ.❤❤❤

Best cover exer 😊❤❤
Thanks!
@@russwilloughby501 your welcome 😊
Hey, I was thinking about doing this on my Ricky! Great rendition and less work for me :-)
Lol. Well, it was between this and "Turn, Turn, Turn"....but your cover of TTT is so excellent I didn't see the need for another one. Thanks so much!
One of my favorites, great job Russ, keep them coming.
Hey thanks so much; really glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent rendition of a fantastic song!! Great job Russ.
Thanks, Steve; I appreciate that!
THAT was amazing. I know and you know it took a lot of effort to produce this. Well done!
Yes, they do...thanks so much!
Another beauty.
Thanks!
Excellent job! I have always been a fan of the Rickenbacker sound, and you captured it well without one, it appears. I can see how much work this was, with three guitars, a bass, lead and harmony vocals. This was a song made when musicians, not computers, made music.
Thank you very much!
Excellent!
Many thanks!
Another amazing job Russ! Vocals always outstanding. That 12 string sounds so cool. You really captured that 60s spirit and sound!! Thanks again for all of these wonderful covers!!
Hey Chris! As always, many thanks...glad you liked it. Yeah, I'm really digging the 12 string!
He don't need no stinking band, he is the band.
Just awesome, as usual, Russ. Mixes remain superb. Thank you so much for these.
Sorry, Russ, I corrected that ^^^. Just great stuff.
Many thanks, as usual Ken!
SO DARN GREAT!!!!!
Many thanks...I really appreciate it!
Beautiful...❤
Thanks!
Russ, u hit it centre again as usual, wow my man, awesome!!!!
Wow....thanks so much! Had to try out my new 12-string!
Outstanding! Awesome!
Many thanks!
Great performance. Thank you!
Just got back from a little fishing trip in the mountains. The first thing I did after unpacking the truck was check to see if you had put up another video . I was not disappointed. Thanks for yet another walk down memory lane.
Nice job Russ ! Have a great weekend sir.
Thanks so much; I always appreciate the kind words. Hope your weekend is going well, too!

Getting better, it's my birthday and I'm going fishing. Doesn't get much better than that.
Looking forward to hearing what you put up next !
Q. Do you ever put up songs that you have written ?
@@PatrickSeanEarl Happy Belated Birthday! Glad to hear you did something you apparently love to do. As to original music, yes, there's actually a slew of original stuff on TH-cam...if you search my name it should come up.
@@russwilloughby501
Cool ! I'll be sure to take a look !
Until next time take care.
Fantastic! …and that 12 string!
Many thanks!
Love your guitar collection, Russ. Inspiring to an old guitar player like me.
Thanks so much, Dave. I guess you could say I'm addicted!
@@russwilloughby501 An understandable addiction, that is not self-destructive...what's not to like?!
Super great cover as usual. It's a sad day as David Crosby has passed away 🙏..
I would love for you to cover the song "Turn, Turn, Turn" by the Byrds one day, if possible.
As always, keep up the great work that you do...
Thanks so much, Charlie! As for TTT, you never know!
The Byrds and The Association are two of my favorite 60s groups!! This is fantastic, Russ. I am also a HUGE Gene Clark fan. Please check out two of his lesser known BYRDS compositions, "She Don't Care About Time" and "Here Without You" and, if you're so moved, I'd love a cover of either or both!! Thanks for this one!!
I'll check 'em out...thanks for the suggestion. Glad you liked the video....I appreciate it!
You nailed it! Good job.
Thanks Steve; I appreciate it!
Have you considered putting some of your songs on TikTok? 🤔 It's so cool that you're able to play every instrument!
Never really thought about TikTok....things are tough enough keeping up with TH-cam and Facebook! Thanks so much for listening!
@@russwilloughby501 It's a pretty fun app. Would you mind if I posted your Love Grows video on Tiktok for you with info about your TH-cam page? Up to you of course. I just like your performance a lot, and I bet a lot of people on there would too! Just let me know, and I can share a link to it for you.
This is brilliant. You are very talented.
A consu mated :-) and talented musician Great job ese!
Many thanks!
Thanks for all the effort, Russ! I so enjoy these vids you put up, excellent job!
So glad to hear it; many thanks!
Damn good!! Damn good!!
Thank you! Thank you!
I stumbled upon this after watching the Starbugs. You nailed it buddy. #subscribed 🖖
Thanks very much; I appreciate the sub!
Wow
Thanks for listening!
Another great job Russ! I hoped this was coming when you got the new 12 string, and you nailed it again!
It's the first tune that came to mind when I got the 12 string. Thanks so much!
I’m posting you all over my Facebook channel
Wow, thanks so much for doing that. Glad you liked it!
Brilliant Russ well done
Thanks so much; I certainly appreciate it!
Impecável!!
Parabéns!!
Thanks very much!
wow that was really cool !
Thank you so much!
Another great cover Russ 👍
Thanks much....I appreciate it!
you seem to as confortable on the drum as on the guitar but your singing is what impresses me the most ! Kudos!!!
Verry smooth drumming sir !! It is quite a pleasure to see you "having fun" while playing all these parts right on the dot !!!! :-)
Thank you, Daniel, I really appreciate it!
This may be controversial, however, I much prefer your rendition of Bob Dylan's classic. I always found Dylan's music hard to tap along to. Your version is brilliant, particularly the haunting 12-string introduction.
I appreciate it, thanks!
Maybe if the Byrds had backed Dylan there might be some validity to your thoughts but the Byrds version is way fuller sounding.
YOU REALLY NAIL IT !! I AM A LONG TIME FAN!!
Thanks for sticking around! I appreciate it!
I only hear the Byrds?
Wonderful job! You sound more like McGuinn than he does!
LOL....thank you so much!
i observed the different voicings you use for the 2 different 12-strings. but did McGuinn actually use 2 of them on the recording?
Not sure if he did or not. I usually double up the rhythm to thicken things up a bit.
I'm disappointed. Took Russ at least three days to do this one! Fantastic job as usual. I wish I had half of your skills. Every note is always spot on
LOL. So glad you liked it...many thanks!
I played along with a strat.
Thanks for listening!
Hey Russ! Great job on this Classic! I was interested in knowing what kind of 12 string that was, it sounded really good
Glad you liked it! The 12 string is a 1967 Greco es-920.
That Greco looks gorgeous, and I like the Strat's Tellyish headstock. Iconic song. You had to do it so that I can learn from you. :)
I lucked out with the Greco. It was pretty dirty when I got it...it took about three hours to clean it up. The Strat's headstock is actually a normal Strat headstock; I think the angle to the camera is what makes it look a little off. It's actually a Guitar Fetish XGP Strat body and neck. They've restocked most of their stuff. So glad you liked the tune...many thanks!
@@russwilloughby501 It's a great feeling when an old, iffy guitar blossoms after some TLC, isn't it? I just snagged a 20 yr old Simon & Patrick cedar top dread that didn't have a scratch on it. Looks like it was bought, then put in a closet. A real barn find.
@@frankfarklesberry It sure is! Congrats on the S&P! I've only played one but it played and sounded great.
Hey Cover King!!!
How do you produce these fucking fantastic cover’s?
Thanks. The audio tracks are recorded individually on a Yamaha AW1600, and at the same time I use my phone to shoot the videos. Everything is then put together in Movavi.
@@russwilloughby501Audio quality is awesome ! Salute
Hey Russ, excellent performance!! I have already subscribed! Have a look to my instrumental covers also.😊
