- This week’s “Remake of a Classic” is The Association’s beautiful 1967 hit, “Never My Love”. Written by Don and Dick Addrisi (who were not in the group), the tune first appeared on the band’s album, “Insight Out”. Over the years, “Never My Love” has been covered by dozens of artists, including The 5th Dimension, Blue Swede, Barry Manilow, Vern Gosdin, David Hasselhoff (dreadful), Smoky Robinson, Bryan Adams, Andy Williams, and even Jon Anderson of YES. By the time The Association's record was certified Gold by the RIAA for one million copies sold as of December 1967, sixteen artists had already covered the song. According to BMI, “Never My Love” is the second most played song of the 20th century (“You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling” is number one, and “Yesterday” is number three).
But it’s The Association’s version that most people know and love (though I’m sure Hasselhoff’s version is up there - not). Ironically, none of The Association’s members played on the original…it’s actually members of L.A.’s famous Wrecking Crew: Hal Blaine on drums, Joe Osborn on bass, Larry Knechtel on keyboards, Al Casey and Mike Deasy on guitars, and producer Bones Howe on tambourine. Even so, it’s the phenomenal vocals by actual members of the group that are, IMO, absolute perfection. Terry Kirkman and Larry Ramos’ dual lead vocal work is a great example of natural chorus at its best.
When I decided to cover this I intentionally didn’t listen to any other version except the original…(okay, I admit: I listened to Hasselhoff’s...I’m always up for a good laugh). To be honest, I didn’t what to find a simplified version that might sway me to take the easy way out. I’ve got to say, this was probably the most difficult cover I’ve done so far. Trying to figure out the organ solo at the end was a bear (there are a few punch in and outs); especially since I’m probably just one step up from a beginner when it comes to keyboards. For those keeping score, I used 16 tracks….a whopping eight for vocals, two for guitars, two for drums, one for bass, and three for keyboards. At one point I added two acoustic guitar tracks, but then decided it took away from the sound of the original, so I bagged ‘em.

Ah, yes ! 1967.... I just got to my first Air Force Base assignment in a small town in the Panhandle of Texas... Sweetwater, Texas...
Even through the entire US Military was totally locked down across the entire US., watching every square inch of the sky for the possible Cold War Missile launch from Russia, and we all worked 24/7, this and other beautiful songs from The Association, came across that 1 radio channel there, and this song, totally made it all better for a while.
Thankfully, later, the threat was gone, and all these Radar Sites, Underground Missile Bases, SAC Bases, etc., were closed down and all was good again..
Everytime I hear The Association's beautiful music and lyrics, it takes me right back to that year and a half in that little town...
Thank you people of Sweetwater for being so kind and caring to us G.I.'s...I might not remember all your names now, but I remember your faces, families, and the things you did so generously for us...You will always be in my prayers of Faith..

Been loving your covers for some time. IMHO the Association's complex harmonies are peerless. SO, a request here. My favorite Association song was NOT one of their biggest hits, but again in my opinion the most beautiful vocally. It's "Everything That Touches You." I'd love it if you gave it a go!!
