    Cold Fear came out 2 months after RE4. It’s hard to call it a “clone” when they were both in development at the same time and released almost the same time.

    FYI, Cold Fear was actually in development at the same time as RE4 and released less than two months after RE4. So it certainly can't be a "clone" in the traditional sense. Also, the way the camera works is very much in the vein of pre-RE4 games rather than the over the shoulder camera used in RE4.

    • @TheCrain

      I played this game hoping to kill time until RE4 came out. It did ok but when 4 finally came out there was no comparison.

      Thank you, I thought it was not an RE4 clone.
      Plus, you play as a member of the Coast Guard. You're not a Navy Seal. I think the team in the intro cutscene are Seals.

    I highly recommend The Suffering and The Suffering: Ties That Bind. They are more action focused but have amazing atmosphere and monster design comparable to silent hill.
    If you have a ps2 or Xbox those are the definitive ways to play the first game, because on pc the audio for the first game is completely messed up. Pc is good for the second game though

    • @Lucifronz
      @Lucifronz ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're more on the action side than horror and I wouldn't call them survival horror.
      But The Suffering: Prison is Hell is a favorite of mine. Midway rarely ever made any boring games and the Suffering is a game I still enjoy playing to this day. I think it's important to mention a few things about it, though:
      One, the main character's story is secondary to the story of the island he's on. His backstory *is* important, obviously, but part of what draws you in is all that's happened on the island itself over its long history.
      Two, the action takes the front stage in the game. There are definitely scary moments, but in most cases, if you're used to scary horror games, this will be more of a horror-skinned action game (like Clive Barker's Jericho or something, but less rushed and shit).

    How about The Thing game itself or Gorky 17. Latter is actually a turn-based tactic, but I really liked the heavy atmosphere and there is a survival aspect with ammo/consumables management, research gone wrong plot and even some puzzles. Both games are very near and dear to my heart and offer some nice chills.

    To this day, Fear Effect 1 is still amongst my favourite games of all time. A fantastic story with an awesome soundtrack and great stylised visuals let down only by it's clunky controls and infuriating trial and error sections, but such was the way of the industry at the time.
    You suggested folks use an emulator with save states to get around issues with the save system which is fair enough, but I must warn people who do this to ensure that they cap their frame rate. There are several points in the game where all you have to do to proceed is run away from an explosion/fire, but if your frame rate is not capped then the explosion animation in the background moves too fast for you to escape and you become softlocked.
    In response to your questions about Fear Effect 2, functionally it's the same game but it's bigger and shinier. The plot is much more intelligent but suffers from serious pacing issues and it falls into the trap that many prequels do; it answers questions about the original that absolutely nobody asked. Still a great game, but the first one is my preference.
    There was a planned third game called Fear Effect Inferno for release in 2003 but that was cancelled quite late in production.
    Fear Effect Sedna was released in 2018 but i've never played it.
    There was a remake of the first game called Fear Effect Reinvented in production but it has sadly recently been cancelled with no reason yet given.

    A game I never see mentioned is Run Like Hell. I wouldn't recommend it as a must-play, but it is an experience. It's a third person shooter with horror elements similar to Dead Space. If the game could be summed up into a single word it would be 'misguided'. There are some known actors that did voice work for the game and the story is very Hollywood in it's delivery. The Xbox got the superior version with extra content and enemies

    • @greenhowie
      @greenhowie ปีที่แล้ว

      Run Like Hell was a weird one, heavily marketed around groundbreaking horror mechanics but honestly it felt more like a prototype for Mass Effect or something. Definitely too much ambition went into that game.

    Despite being a clumsy, budget RE clone, Countdown Vampires is a surprisingly entertaining, playable game. It's got its B-movie charm with silly story and exhilarating voice "acting" and it's also longer than your usual survival horror flick (came out on 2 discs). It's not too hard on the action side but be warned, it features lots of backtracking, samey locations and some ridiculously confusing riddles all the way.

    Glad you mentioned Galerians! In addition to its movie adaptation, the game also got an artbook and a novelization, which was partially translated by a Galerians fan with the handle Shiva Indis. Only about 30 pages of the novel have been translated, but what I read was pretty intriguing! There is also a sequel for the PS2 called Galerians: Ash.

    • @grubermeister6139
      @grubermeister6139 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Galerians is great though you have to be careful not to softlock yourself. If you use your powers too much you can "short" which will kill you in a minute or two and can only be stopped with a special medicine which there is a limited supply of on each level.

    I was hoping you’d add ObsCure. Of course it’s not an amazing game, but it hits that Code Veronica game play (fixed camera positions and lingering camera movements), has lightly weapon combinations like Dead Rising (only with guns and flashlights, but still intriguing for the time), and honestly a great setting (a high school, though it is confusing, since it looks like a college, but in game it does say it was reused, so I think it’s a boarding school that was shut down and turned into a high school). The story is a little light and is a little silly, but I think the game is going for more of a Scream tone, being a little cheeky. It’s also pretty nice with its puzzles and such. The worst things about it is that it only really has one boss and just little sections of harder enemies, a broken floor sections that is a little hard, and the way to reload or change your weapons is on buttons, rather than in a menu, which all weapons and items are in, so it’s hard to control. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely a gem and underrated.

    • @adamsmoberly
      @adamsmoberly ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tricouleur9689 Yeah, I didn’t get the game until last year (I don’t do pc and finding a physical copy is insane; I’ve wanted it since 2009/2010), so I didn’t really finish it up until June/July. It can be a little hard, but I do find it easier than say the original Resident Evil games. Also, when you get the the final boss, and if your playing alone, don’t take in a partner, it helps to have just one character.
      I have the X-Box original physical copy and I don’t know of the original PS2 and PC ports are similar to mine, but if your playing the Steam version, it’s actually slightly different. Not much and the story is the same, but there is a different way in mine to unlock the upper library door and it has a removed cutscene with the enemies that crawl on the ceiling (the characters come out in the hallway and it’s from the monsters point of view seeing them). In the Steam version, the cutscene is nonexistent and to unlock the door on that floor is different too.
      Actually the trailer/game pause screen movie actually shows completely different clips from the game, like none of them match up to the story, so it makes me wonder if the game was completely different before too.

    So glad you have included SH: shattered memories. I have replayed that game twice this month as I got it on the wii. I used to hate it back in the day, when I played it on ps2 , but replaying it now I found a new appreciation for it. The story is amazing, and exploring the city is amazing. It falls short with nightmare stages, puzzles and ironically with replay value.
    I also found it to be immersive, especially where you use wiimote as a phone and listen to phone messages that way. It feels very personal and unsettling.
    I don't agree that Cold Fear is a copy of RE4, because it was released 3 months after RE4. RE4 was released in January 2005, cold fear was released in March 2005. They couldn't have copied a game in 3 months... maybe there was a demo of RE4 released earlier, but I don't think they would be able to rework the whole game in 6 months or so.

    They are all kind of well known in the community, except for Tormented Souls. Great seeing some love for it. And nevertheless, it's great watching your view on them and getting more recognition on them.
    I did play Clock Tower, which is FANTASTIC. The PSX one is actually the SECOND game, and CT2 and CT3 have nothing to do with the rest, they're cashing in for the name. I also played Cold Fear, which is honestly a very very good game. I finished with no cheats, no guide, no nothing, during Halloween some decade ago.
    Also also, I am a happy owner of a copy of Silent Hill Shattered Memories. Enjoying it on the Wii has to be one of the best gaming experiences I had. It's not super duper scary, but had its own unique dread sensation and intense immersion.
    Lastly, Kai, no love for Cursed Mountain? C'mon man! That and Daymare!

      The first game had a updated release for PSX, Windows and the WonderSwan which were only in Japan (like the Super Famicom original) and yes, the other one is a sequel to the first game, the reason for the second game being treated as the "first" game is due to the first game never getting releases outside of Japan, besides fan translations for the Super Famicom game and its updated releases on Windows and PSX.

    Growing up, I was never really into survival horror games until I played The Suffering. It's on OG Xbox and PS2. I knew nothing about it until one night I saw it at my local Blockbuster and saw that Midway made it so I decided to rent it and it did not disappoint. You play a prisoner convicted of killing your entire family and is sent to an Alcatraz-like prison and as soon you are sent to your cell, all hell breaks loose with weird-like creatures taking over, all designed after the 7 ways to be executed in prison. It was ahead of its time and was a first and third-person shooter. It had multiple endings depending on how good or bad of an inmate you treated towards other inmates and guards while trying to escape the island. It's my favorite survival game by far.

    Really great video. Some other lesser known horror games I’d say to try are:
    Blue Stinger

    • @WolfyFancyLads
      @WolfyFancyLads ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, people might not like Overblood. 2 is a lot different, but 1 is downright cruel to play. Lotta instant deaths, ammo is hard to find cos you just blindly search (there's no "here it is!" glint like other games), standing and crouching can trigger different search results and the platforming is.... A thing. Which is a shame cos it doesn't rely on flooding you with enemies and the story is good, plus the voice acting is surprisingly better than you'd expect.
      If they remade it and fixed a couple of things, I'd argue it'd be great. But as it stands, it's pretty harsh to new players unless you know what to expect (I was half way through the game before I realized I had to blind search for ammo).

    While I can’t give it a full on recommendation just yet (as I haven’t finished it), I’ve been playing through Extermination on the PS2 and it’s been a lot of fun so far due to the gun customization and the infection system, which makes nearly every combat situation a nail biter. It’s also very cheap to buy for a survival horror game which means a lot given how insane the prices of other games in the genre have gotten.

    If you enjoyed the first Fear Effect, it's prequel "Retro Helix" is definitely worth a look. Gameplay is more of the same while the story has improved and the game in general is more polished than the original. It also still has all the sexy stuff that many show up for.
    Sadly, the franchise hasn't had much love since then. FE3:Firestorm was cancelled and a 3rd party developed FE:Sedna keeps with the story beats and puzzles, but turns the game into an isometric squad shooter. Losing the charm of the originals. The feel and graphics remind me of a modernised twist on the many Newgrounds Flash adventure games! Play Sedna if can get it cheap but don't expect much.
    +1 for ClockTower! There was a indie remake for that which ended up going in a different direction and turning into the RE:Mothered series. That 16-bit "SnipSnipSnip" still haunts me to this day... >X.X
