      Set-up want makes sense to me. It's the fuse to the firecracker, the first domino, the nudge on a ball at the top of a hill. If there is no firecracker, lighting the fuse ends in a fizzle. If there aren't a thousand other dominoes, the first domino just flops. If the ball is in Iowa, it rolls an inch and stops. ...Aaaand without the time loop, Phil (Bill Murray) has a crappy and forgettable day in a town he is quick to put in his rear view mirror.

    Have a story that you want to tell. A story that is important to you,, and means something. Decades ago, we had authors who wrote one or two stories that meant something to them. Then, with television, there is a huge demand for content. People became “ professional screenwriters”, having to crank out a story every few days. That is when quality drops when storytelling becomes McDonald’s rather than a restaurant. So, two basic approaches: have a story that is burning inside you for you to tell. Or, create a bunch of interesting characters and march them through various stories and adventures.

    3 basic stories. Man vs man, man vs nature, man vs himself. The best stories have combinations of all the basic three conflicts. Take Star Trek 2, Kirk vs Khan, Kirk vs old age and change and the loss that change brings, and Kirk learns how to give up his depression and reconnects with his captaincy and estranged son. Also, Kirk was always a cheater who cheated his way out of no-win scenarios. But at the end he has to accept loss and that all losses can’t not be escaped by means of cheating; everyone has has to pay the piper. Kirk initially talks about cheating his way out of a starfleet simulation test, he tricks/cheats Khan several times in the film, but at the end Kirk has to accept loss and death.

    Question: Suppose I wrote the screenplay "Doc Van Winkle." I could have a young doctor at the end of her residency, half-asleep on her feet, desperate for just a wink, and testing for chlamydia by inserting a long swab into some grungy, stinking, criminal-looking dude's pecker as he has a fit about how terrible it is. She mutters, "There's got to be a better way." The story continues as she's forced into a quadruple shift. When she finally gets home and gets to sleep -- after drinking wine she bought from a shifty Gypsy or some such -- she wakes up 100-years later, and the "better way" to do medicine turned out to be a hell that resulted from a long series of good decisions made with good intentions.
    I have two set-up wants: Sleep and a better way to do medicine. Both of these blow up in her face -- ending act 1? I don't understand acts. But the rest of the movie then is her dealing with being a fish out of water, who is also a relic trying to bring humaneness back into medicine at the cost of efficiency -- and maybe even a little safety.
    Does this accurately reflect Chamberlain's idea?
    Thanks in advance ^_^

      Her imdb has no relevance to the usefulness of the information she is sharing. What's important is the information. Is it presented in a way you understand and can apply to your own work in a meaningful way. What school, what credits, what name, what shiny thing impresses you is of no importance to whether or not the information being shared is useful. But, these folks think they can spew these advices to us, it's hard to take them seriously. This thing that Phil's "set-up want" is to spend 24 hours in Punxsutawney just because he says so is kind of a stretch. That piece of dialogue is ironic, not literal. I'm not saying that structure doesn't matter or whatever, but this is ridiculous. If you look hard enough you can fit any structure theory in almost any movie.

    Tootsie is a well constructed obvious, predictable piece of writing. No mystery to it. 8 minutes in you know where it's going. It is an over extended joke with predictable characters. "Witness" is a much better movie. It has a larger social context and though we know there will be a showdown, we have no idea how it will turn out.

    • @beebuzz959
      @beebuzz959 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You mean the old movie with Harrison Ford as a detective amongst the Amish? that's a mystery, and that's why it's not predictable. You're comparing two totally different genres. Tootsie is a rom-com, and it's a given that they always get together in the end. whether you like it or not, the reason people watch movies like that is they find the fun in seeing how the two people get together in the end, and watching that journey. They like to watch them fall in love.

    • @beebuzz959
      @beebuzz959 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also, I'm sure she could take witness and do some examples from that as well, but she really likes the example of Tootsie because it helps her to explain it in a much easier way. Most people seem to understand it better when she uses the Tootsie. Just because you don't like that movie doesn't mean there's not a lesson in it. don't hurt yourself by not letting yourself understand the valuable information she is giving you just because you don't like that particular movie. Look at her book, she's got 30 other examples.

    There's 2 things that really hurt a lot of movies in a fundamental way, and they are so basic but I see them overlooked so many times and the're the ones I dont wanna watch again. (1) No character developement at some point (usually the very begining) and (2) characters that didnt have to overcome something bigger than them. Without these 2 things you can never really care about them or anything they end up doing in the movie, so the movie always turns out really shit or at the very least dissapointing, despite whatever else it has going for it. But the ones that get those 2 things right are always rewatchable to me and these 2 things are are always really well implimented in every one of my favourite movies. Anyway my 2 cents.
