      +Samuel Morgan the motors are kinda cheaply made but you can buy them cheap on eBay I got 4 for about 6 bucks cheap but there are two different motors Lefts and rights I burned one out and replaced one make sure you have a speed gun and take notes of which prop is on which motor!

    I have a friend with one of these X5SC quads. He got it stuck in a tree, it was up there for 2 weeks in some pretty bad weather including a lot of rain, bad hailstorms and even a bit of snow.
    He finally got it back a couple of days ago and stuck it in his airing cupboard for a few hours. Apart from a possibly damaged motor which is a cheap and easy fix, everything was fine so they're tough little quads.
    Also, his X5SC works with my X8C transmitter. ;-)

    Thanks FL. Another easy to hear & understand tutorial. One slight discrepancy I've found since I've worked out how little I know about headless despite using it every weekend - Despite what it says in ALL the Syma manuals binding the Tx & quad is not what defines the headless direction on Syma X5 & X8 quads so equipped.
    I've just been experimenting with my Syma X8C and have found that there are 2 ways to define the forward headless direction. After adding a new battery to the quad, powering on the quad and controller and binding with left stick up & down, then setting the GYROS/ACCELEROMETERS/IMU by holding both sticks DOWN and to the RIGHT you can either .... 1... select an appropriate headless direction (while on the ground or after lift-off and also can be totally different from the way the quad was pointing when bound) then lock it in by holding down the left shoulder button for more than 2 seconds. Or...2... select an appropriate headless direction whilst on the ground and lock it in by holding both sticks DOWN and to the LEFT. Edit..Note that 2 sets a direction but does not turn "headless" on - only 1 does that. (Lights blink slowly when in headless.)
    The set headless direction is then held, with varying degrees of accuracy depending on how violently the quad is thrown around (or crashed) until you power off the quad or land & reset using 2. Not sure yet what happens in the event of a momentary loss of signal/power!
    The above can easily be confirmed by doing a 5-second test that all reviewers might include in their videos for the sake of completeness and accuracy.
    1...At start of flight place quad on ground facing to your right and bind quad & Tx.
    2...IF Quad requires a separate step to arm motors, pick up quad, place facing left and arm motors. Then (carefully!) ...
    3...Pick up quad, place facing forward and select headless. Take off, add full yaw & forward pitch and see which way the quad moves.
    4...Return & land quad (by RTH if a GPs-equipped unit) and deselect headless. (If still engaged.) Pick up quad and turn 90 degrees to first headless direction. Reselect headless (after re-arming if required) and check for current setting.
    5...Turn off headless & return to the features that interest the more experienced majority of their viewers but with the halo of beatitude wished upon them by a lot of Noobs (& us old farts who are well past becoming top gun UAV pilots but still enjoy our toys!)

    I know this sounds funny, maybe, but did you find that the battery time shortens with headless mode on? I just got one of these three days ago and have been flying the props off it :) I discovered that with headless mode engaged, it seems to shave a tiny amount off the flight time. Ive been graphing it and found that at least one minute or so is lost when video is shot with headless mode, whereas without it, I get that little bit back. I guess I would have to chalk it up to extra computations and the small amount of energy they take. I also haven't encountered the wind loading bug since I got it.
    The great thing about headless mode is that people with vision that is not so super have an easier time at distance. Plus, you can point your camera and film without worrying as much about orientation as you do. Pretty good little machine.
    I did notice that it tends to go into VRS a bit quicker than me good ol' X5C. That's okay though. The lesson you taught us on getting out of it has saved my bacon on more than one occasion :) I ordered the black one like you have there, and replaced the front two props with the white ones from the X5c spares I had. A match made in heaven.
    Thank you for the lessons you show here. I pretty much learned almost ALL of what I needed to know from your vids. There are others with instructions, but most are very quick and vague. I'm visually impared to some extent, and even with that hurtle, I managed this skill from your lessons. So much of it is about knowing the mechanics and the logic of operation. As long as you can see it you can fly it :)
    Again, thanks for the great video.

    i have purchased five 5's recently using 1, keeping 1 as spare, 1 for my brother who loves it, 1 for a friend who was so impressed with it he wanted one for himself, and another 1 for me as i want to mod it. all were £20 each. these are amazing for just 20 notes have purchased other brands and was very dissapointed with them. syma x5 awsome and great to learn with. just to let you know the manufacturer claimed range is 150m, oh no it isn't ive flown mine several times out to 385m and had to drop it or hit tree's.

    This guy Dustin Dunnill reviewing the Syma X8G used the top right button in headless mode as a return home button instead of the joystick. He pressed it and 1 long beep and it returned home. The X5C should do it too. I never knew that. Have you ever tried that? Check it out starting at 14:55. The Title of the video is: Syma X8G Review

      +Joe Flash One key return does the exact same thing as pulling back on the pitch stick while in headless mode. It flies in the opposite direction that the quadcopter was pointed when it took off. It will only fly back to you IF you fly and keep the quadcopter straight in front of you down that same direction.

      +Quadcopter 101 Thats cool. I did not know that the Syma remote had the one key return option. Many people do not know that on the Syma remotes. • @MilanKarakas
    @MilanKarakas 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can reset heading by moving both sticks bottom left - quad will blink few times and new heading is remembered. Also, there exist some general reset by moving both sticks bottom right short (will clear all trim settings on remote), or long until remote sounds beep (perhaps re-binding, but not sure). Don't know what is the difference between bottom right short and long time - it just react differently. EDIT: This works on Bayangtoys X8, but not sure whether Syma X5C has similar option.

    Thanks - this is very helpful in understanding what the aircraft uses as a reference point. Based on my understanding of your video, it's the initial orientation of the copter (what it's pointed to when starting), correct? So let's say I'm on a baseball diamond and put the copter on third base pointed toward home and I'm standing on third. Stick forward, the drone goes to home plate, back and it goes to back to third. While that's going on, I (the controller) run over to first base. Forward/back on the stick don't change, meaning the drone is still moving back and forth from third to home. I'm just trying to confirm that the reference point is the initial orientation and not relative to the controller. Thanks!

I wish you many good, safe and enjoyable flights to come.

    Hi Quadcopter 101, I recently purchased an the Syma X5SC a few weeks ago. It worked well for the first week and a half, however this past week, my quad has lost its lift. Even with the suggested fine tuning of the the quad according to manual, the X5SC has little or no lift and drifts sideways even with correcting the horizontal and forward directions
    Considerations:
    The battery of the quad and the transceiver were fully charged.
    After crashing the blades hit the protective frame(I replaced the frame) - I still did not get the height when I first bought it
    One of the blades was bent so I replaced the blades. - It also did not get the lift
    Do you know what some of the possible issues maybe?
    Thank you for your assistance.
    Peter

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Peter Nurman Am guessing that you put a wrong direction prop when you replaced it (there are clockwise turning and counter clockwise turning). All should blow air downward. If any are blowing air upward, then that prop is the wrong shape. Reinstall another prop of the other shape.

    • @peteman19
      @peteman19 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Quadcopter 101 Thank you for responding back.
      I checked the blades and the one I replaced were the ones that came with my X5SC kit.
      I bound the copter with the transmitter and airflow was blowing air downward.
      I have tomorrow off, I could do a short video and post it if you'd like me to.

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Nurman Yes but keep in mind that your X5SC has two counter clockwise turning motors, and two clockwise turning motors. Of the spares propellers, you have two designed for clockwise turning and two designed for counter clockwise. If you accidentally put a wrong clockwise turning prop on a counter-clockwise motor (or vice versa), your quadcopter will not take off. Check by holding the quadcopter and feeling the air beneath each prop. It should be blowing downward under each prop. If any are blowing upward instead, then the wrong prop was installed on that motor.
      BUT if the air is indeed blowing downward under each prop, then the next thing to check is for debris in the gears. Gently turn each propeller by hand, feeling for any unusual resistance in the rotation. Any "bumps" in the turn is likely debris in the gears, which will also reduce power from the motors preventing takeoff. A single grain of sand between the gear teeth can do it. Clear it by brushing with an old toothbrush, or sliding a pin between the gear teeth.

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are supposed to rotate in opposite directions per each arm. That's to counter torque. But with that, there are two clockwise shaped propellers and two counter clockwise shaped propellers, for the corresponding CW and CCW motors. If you accidentally install a wrong blade to a wrong motor (i.e. a CW propeller to a CCW motor, or vice versa), the propeller will blow air upwards instead of down. In such a case, the quadcopter will either flip or not take off. Take a close look at the following picture, paying attention to the shape of the propellers, and where they are located. Make yours match the picture www.thedronefiles.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/x5sc-1-1.jpg

Although I'm not sure why you would want to use the X5SC/W controller with the X8C? The X8C controller has much greater range (more than 200m) than the X5SC controller (under 100m).

      +Welder Nate Any shipping cost?

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Welder Nate Yes. In headless mode, the quadcopter remembers the direction that it was pointed when it took to the air. If you face in that direction, the quadcopter will match the movement of the right stick, no matter which direction the quadcopter's front is pointed. Moving the right stick forward/back/right/or left will cause the quadcopter to do the same. This makes it very easy for beginners to fly.

I have one that looks just like it but the controller is different (no LCD panel & no chrome frames around control sticks) and the manual is broken English and not very good. It seems to be a clone! Can you do a video about the different manufacturers and how to tell which one you have? Or are they just different generations from the same manufacturer? The button you push for 'headless' mode is the same one I use to increase response sensitivity. I'll have to try holding it down longer to see if it will go into headless mode. BIGS382k16 There are two clockwise and two counterclockwise spinning blades that alternate in direction with each arm, and go with corresponding motors in those directions. If attached to a wrong motor, the propeller will blow air upwards instead of downwards, causing the quadcopter to flip. You didn't mention which specific quadcopter, but if you do a google image search, you may be able to find images of your quadcopter as example showing how the blades should be installed. Or just closely observe which ones seem to be blowing air upwards, and replace with a different shaped propeller.

      +GamerFuz ! It places the throttle control on either the left stick (Mode 2) or right stick (Mode 1). I know the following sounds weird, but most people who live in a country that drives on the right side of the road, such as the USA, prefer Mode 2 (throttle on the left). If that country drives on the left, those people generally prefer Mode 1 (throttle on the right). It has something to do with how our brains are programmed from driving.

      Do you know how to calibrate your quadcopter's gyros?
      1) Turn on the quadcopter and place it on a flat and level surface.
      2) Turn on and bind the transmitter. Center all trim tabs.
      3) Leaving the quadcopter undisturbed, move and hold both control sticks to their lower left corners. Hold them there until the quadcopter's lights blink. If they don't blink, then try lower right corners, lower outboard, or lower inboard until you notice the lights blink.
      4) Let go of the sticks and try flying.

      praveg sinha I think that you're really asking if you could use a cheap cell phone Li-ion battery with your quadcopter? These batteries do have high energy density like the RC LiPo's but don't have the ability to provide high amperage discharge for a sustained period. It may work momentarily, but as the flight goes on a cell phone battery would start to overheat, with noticeable reduction in power. The battery would also likely be damaged from such use.

      Many (if not most) toy quads use the questionable practice of advertising one key return as if it's a return to home feature. But it is not. Only a quadcopter with a GPS system is capable of returning to home and landing at its takeoff spot. This quadcopter does not have a GPS, and is not capable of return to home and landing. Always remember, if no GPS, then no RTH or RTL. No matter what the listing questionably infers.
      "One key return" simply flies the quadcopter in the exact opposite direction that it was pointed when it took off. For example, if the quadcopter was pointed North at takeoff, pressing one key return would make it fly south. Thus if you make an effort to always keep the quadcopter flying North of your position, pressing one key return would make it roughly fly back toward you. But if the quadcopter was anywhere else but North, it may actually fly away from you.

      PLUS, you have to cancel one key return when it reaches you or it will keep on going!

    I'm new to drone stuff so excuse my drone 101 question. I thought the X5sc doesn't have WIFI. How can you get a video feed back to show on your video. Are you patching it in later from the SD card?

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The X5SC does not have WiFi or video streaming. It records video to a microSD memory card inserted into the camera. Later, the card can be removed, and the video can be downloaded to your computer or phone. I then used video editing software to superimpose it with the above video.
      BUT if you're interested in live video streaming to your phone, the following can do such. th-cam.com/video/Pzck0B-VvU4/w-d-xo.html

    The control board in my x5sc-1 headless quad went bad and when I ordered a new one I received a board # SM-X5C-R-V5. The problem is the board I am replacing is # SM-X5S-R-V1. There is no place to connect the camera and it will not operate in the headless mode. Any suggestions where I can get the correct version. All my correspondence to the seller is a waste of time!

      Donn Brown That sounds like an X5C control board which is very different than the X5SC. It will work with your X5SC, but with the limitations that you discovered. Banggood is selling the following www.banggood.com/Syma-X5SC-X5SW-Receiver-Receivering-Board-p-985855.html?p=RB0922217402201307U3

      Thanks.. I have decided to just use it as a trainer with no camera or the headless mode.

    I just bougt x8c and I`m still learning to fly, few crashes but nothing bad. Main problem that I have is: after calibration and flying few minutes in HEADLESS mode everything is great and comands work perfect but after few minutes (I`M NOT SWITCHING TO REGULAR MODE FROM HEADLESS MODE) it is not headless mode anymore by itself, cause I`m starting to lose control, there is no more left for left, right for right, forward to forward and back to back, every comand act like is no more HEADLESS mode and I almost crash from higher altitude so please if you can provide any help????

      I was in similar situation. Anyway you should learn to fly without headless mode. It is a little hard. You can watch quadcopter 101 lessons on youtube. I kinda learn all 4 steps in less than 20 mins of flight. I am pretty confident now except my syma x5sw suffer from windbug and Lost control with slight wind.
