Just to clarify.. Old Mans surf break is not in front of Old Man's Bar. The break is further down the beach towards Echo. Surf in front of the bar is called Batu Bolong.
OMG great tip about the taking a shot of gin or vodka for the bacteria. I am SO happy to have to found your channel, AWESOME VIDEOS!!! Now I am reading your blog, SO GOOD. Btw your blog link on about channel section, didnt work - I copied and pasted it into google and then it pulled the updated link. Thank you for this amazing surf travel content, SO GOOD
Canguu and Finns are the best early morning or late sessions if had in ages Just a tip tho, wear some ear plugs the water can be incredibly polluted at times n me mate got a horror infection and an early flight home Thnx for d chanel
Oh how I miss surfing in shorts. Love in Tassie and spring suit is go to summer attire. Stayed near changu 2017 and got a surf guide to take me north about 40mins to a good spot. Don’t remember name.
Hahah sick! I've been to Tassie actually and must say, it is chilly... Think I wore a 4/3mm and boots/hood in November down there hahah!! Yeah there's some fun waves up that way!!
Hee! Thanks for the vid! Love it. Do you recommand any surfcoaching with video analysis? I found out that a lot of coaching is more beginner focussed like pushing into waves and telling what wave to get and not focussing on the right technique.
Yeah you're right! You can get a few hours early with glassy conditions, but later in the day, you can head over to the East Coast and get offshore waves again!!
I found it to be waaaaay too crowded Transportation is a must especially if you don't want to surf with a few hundred of your closest friends Besides that I'd highly recommend it for anyone wanting to have a great time even if you're bringing your loved ones Thanks for sharing as always my friend Keep em coming and Be well 👍🤙
Hey mate!! Yeah it is gnarly actually, the crowd!! But yeah it's perfect if you're travelling with friends/family that don't surf as it just has everything!! Thank you and plenty more coming :)
Hey mate! Thank you! Definitely hit up Nicaragua, sick waves!! I do a few different things, freelance content writing, teach english online and now, TH-cam is becoming my main job haha!!
It's gotten a bit more expensive last couple years. Then again, I was there for the pandemic when everything was half price. Definitely the best place in Bali to party is that's on your To Do list. Also food is insanely varied and good. I've had amazing Mexican and Italian there. Rainy season is especially bad the first month which is when all the mucked up creeks and riverbeds flood out to see, including off of the highways. I think I would simply pass that month of November. Everyone I met including me had ear infections which in the tropics can turn into lung infections simply because of the bacteria count. Don't shy away from going to the local clinics for ear drops and antibiotics. I would recommend the same for reef cuts if they need cleaning. For $15 you can go to any local clinic and get that cleaned and dressed much better than you can. And then give it some time. That wound in dirty water is not going to be happy. It's different in the Ments where water quality is really nice, you can get stitches and surf the next day (assuming antibiotics as well).
Yeah i bet it was a lot better during the Pandemic. well, not for local businesses, but for the crowd factor! But yeah goos shout on the food, so many options and yeah I've been in November a few times and always been super rainy! And yeah thanks for the heads up on the clinics! will consider that next time I get cut in Bali!!
Thanks for your video. I use to surf Canggu from 1987-1995 when there was one drink cart on the stairs. Would buy from Ketut a water to rinse off and a coke to kill any shit water I may have swallowed. No place to stay, no restaurants and no bloody surf schools. Just rice fields everywhere. Went back for a visit about 5 years ago and was not impressed. Love the right off the rivermouth and the left sandbar sometimes would get good but there are so many other waves much better and with cleaner water
Would you believe my first trip to Bali was in 1970, from Perth, for $108, including return fair, a Losmen for 2 weeks with a breakfast of a jaffle, a banana and a tea. We surfed all the main breaks from Ulus to Cangu, with not one Balo to be seen. And it was like that until about 78, then it started to get busy.
Hey mate!! Good question... To be honest, I don't know. I think the problem is regarding how trash is dealt with generally in Bali, not the amount of people coming/going!?
@@DanHarmon123 right, the surfers aren’t to blame for the trash but they certainly contribute to it and the traffic. It’s more the idea that if your going to a place to use it. It’s a great attitude to give before you take. Not just take what you came for and leave. Finding a way to help the trash and traffic problem are just some of the ways to give back. Certainly don’t think just your tourist $ is fixing or helping anything.
Hey Dan, great videos - have watched lots of your Bali & Lembongan surf ones as we head there in April We have 6 days in Canggu, 3 out at Nusa Lembongan and then back to Bali for 3 nights at the end. Need to book the last spot, and wondering another good surf spot to try and stay right near the beach. My boys are intermediate surfers but not used to reef breaks so after something user friendly and not gnarly. Thanks for any recommendations Cheers Darin
Hi mate!! Epic, sounds like you've got a wicked trip planned!! Hmmm, I'd say Medewi up North could be worth checking out. There's a long left point there, which is pretty mellow :)
Hey mate! Yeah i'm not sure to be honest. They never have surfboard racks so like @MrStevie said, it wouldn't be that safe due to the traffic. They might have a policy against it, but I think it would depend on the driver! If anyone reading this knows, please let us know :)
Hey mate!! I just used up all of my three month Aussie visa, so not sure they'll allow me back in just yet hahah, but will definitely make one next time i'm over there!!
Are there any locations in bali with great surf that arent over crowded and party areas? Cheaper is better with great surf and a quiet chill atmosphere. Or, are those gone now?
@@brantrichardson1949 Lombok and Sumbawa are other options nearby. Lombok definitely still gets a crowd, but there are a lot of different spots to explore. Ive surfed alone a few times in Lombok
Yeah I'm sure there are plenty of places left to explore. But yeah places like Medewi and Balian might be a good shout. I've never been there though so i don't know first hand!
Extrem heavy xxx traffic/kamikase driver, polluted, very dirty ocean (e.coli) and beaches with tons of plastic evrywhere, dogs and trashes, crowds, impossible to sleep du to almost constant music bass anywhere you stay, not cheap anymore... enjoy your stay !
First Thanks to Dan for his video, as a personal experience crowd is the common point of all negativeness about this place. This part of Bali lost the authentic soul and spirit of Indo islands it’s just a place to be for fake hipsters and instagram followers of the trends. As he said we are the crowd but i prefer belong to a crowd into my spirit
It's crowded, but the waves are still there and Canggu still has some charm! Any questions about surfing in Canggu, please fire away below! Also, check out my other recent video "World's Cheapest Surf Destinations": th-cam.com/video/33zVg0xxz0o/w-d-xo.html
exploiting surf spots on the internet i.e.TH-cam is a dubious unethical endeavor. Kooks sharing info to kooks bringing more kooks to the area. In the name of personal gain.
It's not exploiting surf spots at all. Canggu is one of the most crowded/well-known places on earth. Also, If I go to these places and say how crowded they are, wouldn't that put people off and result in less crowds?
I remember surfing up that way in 1997, just rice fields and the odd shack for cokes or fantas. Gold. St Ives posse 💪
Sick!! Bet it was epic back then!!
Just to clarify.. Old Mans surf break is not in front of Old Man's Bar. The break is further down the beach towards Echo. Surf in front of the bar is called Batu Bolong.
Hey mate! Thank for that! I actually didn't know that, in my head, it's all just Old Mans, but then again I never surf it either hahah!!
@@DanHarmon123 haha no worries man! Yeah it causes confusion. Love your vids btw 🙏🏽
A guy posting complete guide not even knowing spots.
Pppfffttt what a tool
Kudos for acknowledging the hypocrisy of complaining about the crowds while literally being part of that crowd!
Yeah everyone does it, but still goes haha! And I'm one of those haha...
Great video! Planning my first ever surfing trip and found this video after deciding on Canggu. Incredibly helpful.
Great video! I appreciated the honest review of the spot that is not always a paradise but is affected by pollution as well
Thanks Andrea!! Yeah definitely both sides to it!
Yes everyone must experience it. Book your flights mate its once in a lifetime experience.

Great overview mate. Pity about the plastic and rubbish pollution in such a beautiful place. Very honest review.
Thank you
Thanks, Niel! Yeah definitely a big factor, especially now in wet season :(

great content man! please do a vid on Lombok 🙏
Hey Harvey! Thanks mate. I'm actually in Lombok now, so hopefully going to release a video in the next few weeks :)
Hey bro, do you any surf shop board rental recommendations and surf guide. Thanks
I think in wet season the waves are pretty chaotic with on-shore wind. Last year people were going to Sanur to have off shore wind
Yeah you're right! You can get a few hours early with glassy conditions, but later in the day, you can head over to the East Coast and get offshore waves again!!
I surfed in canggu - specifically batu bolong (3 days in a row) and got gnaaarly bali belly. I WISH I KNEW BEFORE

Perhaps Medewi, Balian or the east end are less crowded. Anything else on a 20 km radius from the airport is packed.
How about going to any Indo island other than Bali. If I remember correctly 90% of all tourism in Indonesia takes place on Bali.
