Mixed FeLV Households - Can You? Should You? Will You?

  • Far too often, the owner of a group of cats who have lived indoors together for years has one cat that gets sick. The owner takes the cat to the vet only to find out that the cat has FeLV and is suffering from FeLV-related disease. All the other cats in the household have been exposed to FeLV. That’s a case of an accidentally mixed household. Now what? What do you do if you want to deliberately have a mixed household? Can FeLV+ cats live with negative cats with minimal risk? What to do? Can You Mix Them? Should You Mix Them? Will You Mix Them? Let’s have a conversation.

This is very informative I just found a stray cat the snap tested positive we are going to wait a few weeks to test again and see if it was a false positive but I currently have another cat that is negative I’m nervous about them interacting cause she’s friendly so we will see they are currently separated until he can get fixed and re tested

Is it possible to do a video like this for FIV cats, there is so manyyyy FIV+ cats here in Wichita (I TNR in the downtown area near the river) and many of them are adoptable but FIV+

I'll add it to our list of topics to discuss. (I've had several FIV+ cats in my household with FIV- cats without issue - I'm lucky I started with a shelter that never made a big deal out of it!) What is the policy in Wichita (or on the organizational level) for FIV+ cats? Do they TNR, adopt out, or do they still euthanize?
